Blackburn deny reports of financial crisis

Blackburn have released a statement strongly denying reports in the Mail on Sunday that the club is heading for a financial crisis.

“There is no financial crisis, and there is absolutely no danger to the players’ and staff wages,” read the statement on the club’s website.

It added that the club is in talks with Barclays over how the bank can continue to support Rovers in the future.

The struggling Premier League team are owned by Indian poultry firm Venky’s.

This has been the case since November last year when the Rao family, who own Venky’s, took over the Lancashire club in a deal worth £43m, £20m of which was acquired debt.

Their reign has been met with widespread opposition from Blackburn fans unhappy with their running of the club.

Barclays Bank and Blackburn Rovers have enjoyed a long relationship over many years and are currently in constructive dialogue about how the bank, along with the owners, can support the club for many years to come

Statement on the Blackburn website

In November this year, the owners insisted they were not interested in selling Rovers after Middle East oil giant Qatar Petroleum were linked with a potential take-over.

Reports emerged over the weekend claiming the owners had received a demand from the bank to pay £10m to help to pay off the club’s debts.

Manager Steve Kean, who has also been a target of the fans’ discontent, insisted he know nothing about such a situation following Sunday’s 2-1 defeat at Sunderland and now the club have now moved to publicly deny the report.

“Amongst all professional football clubs, finances are regularly assessed and reassessed during the season based on performance, income and costs, and at Blackburn Rovers this is no different,” explained finance director Karen Silk in a statement.

“Barclays Bank and Blackburn Rovers have enjoyed a long relationship over many years and are currently in constructive dialogue about how the bank, along with the owners, can support the club for many years to come.”

Blackburn are currently second bottom of the Premier League table with 10 points from 15 games.

Man Utd need to take the pressure off Wayne Rooney says Paul Ince

Page last updated at 23:38 GMT, Tuesday, 13 December 2011

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney

Rooney has scored 11 of United’s 35 league goals so far

Manchester United must sign a goalscorer as well as replacements for injured duo Darren Fletcher and Nemanja Vidic, says ex-United star Paul Ince.

Midfielder Fletcher has been ruled out indefinitely through illness while defender Vidic will not play again this season with a knee injury.

But Ince thinks they also need a new striker to support Wayne Rooney.

“There is a lot of pressure on Rooney and we saw what that did to him in the World Cup,” Ince told BBC Sport.

MAN UTD GOALS THIS SEASON

  • Rooney 14 goals in 19 games (1 as sub)
  • Nani 7 in 22 (4)
  • Hernandez 6 in 17 (7)
  • Welbeck 5 in 15 (5)
  • Owen 3 in 4 (1)
  • Young 3 in 15 (1)
  • Berbatov 2 in 12 (6)
  • Valencia 2 in 15 (4)

“If you are going to compete with the likes of Manchester City and Chelsea you need someone who is going to score you 20 goals a season and you can’t just rely on Wayne Rooney to do it year in and year out.

“Nani has chipped in and Ashley Young was flying early on, but they have quietened down form-wise, so you wonder where the goals are going to come from.

“[Dimitar] Berbatov’s not playing enough, Michael Owen is out injured again and Danny Welbeck is still a young lad but he will chip in with goals.”

Javier Hernandez, who scored 20 goals for United last season and has notched six in this campaign, is currently out injured for several weeks after damaging ankle ligaments against Aston Villa on 3 December.

Fletcher is taking an extended break after the club revealed he was suffering from ulcerative colitis and Ince, who spent five years at Old Trafford, believes his old boss Sir Alex Ferguson will be eyeing more than one midfielder.

“Darren Fletcher over the years has been that engine room, his energy levels are incredible so to hear the news that he’s going to be out for a while is very sad,” said former England midfielder Ince.

“But I feel they need that creativity in midfield, losing Scholesy [the retired Paul Scholes] was a big loss obviously.

“You’re not going to get players like Roy Keane or Bryan Robson, those players aren’t around anymore.

The 27-year-old midfield man’s career now takes second place to his rehabilitation, but his absence is a blow to both United – whose midfield resources are already stretched – and Scotland.

“The game has changed since then and you don’t get those type of characters, so he’s got to look at another way of controlling the midfield and I think that can come from creativity in someone like Luka Modric or Andres Iniesta, they are the players I would be looking at if I was Sir Alex Ferguson.

“I’m sure Sir Alex will take stock and he’ll be looking at what type of player he will need in January and it won’t just be in midfield, I’m sure he’s looking at a centre-half with Vidic being out.

“But I’m sure he knows what to do, there’s no point me telling him what to do because he’s the greatest manager I’ve ever played under.”

Prison for yob fans in pub clash

Prison for yob fans in pub clash

Seven Albion football thugs who clashed with rival Wolves supporters and police at a Black Country pub were today each beginning 16-month jail sentences.

Glasses, stools and beer barrels were used as “missiles” whenthe two groups of football fans brawled at the Tamebridge pub in Great Bridge following a league local derby.

Customers with young children and babies feared for their safety while police used specialist safety helmets to protect themselves, Wolverhampton Crown Court was told.

Judge Michael Challinor said yesterday he was convinced the yobs had gone to the pub expecting trouble.

The court has heard how violence flared followed the match on February 20, which ended in a 1-1 draw.

At about 5pm, five Wolves fans walked into the pub and started chanting towards a group of Albion supporters.

They retaliated by launching glasses and stools like “missiles” towards the Wolves group and forced them out of the pub, said prosecutor Miss Madhu Rai.

The Albion fans moved to the beer garden when police arrived, with some throwing whatever they could at officers.
