Nikica Jelavic celebrates Jelavic scored both goals for Rangers in Edinburgh

Nikica Jelavic’s second-half double gave Scottish Premier League leaders Rangers a victory that proved a nightmare for Hibernian’s Michael Hart.

Hibs striker Leigh Griffiths missed the only clearcut opportunity of a dour first half at Easter Road.

But the game came to life after the break and Jelavic scored from the spot on 61 minutes after Hart had fouled Lee Wallace.

Defender Hart was at fault as Jelavic headed the second eight minutes later.

Rangers’ dogged display ensured a win that stretched their lead at the top of the table to seven points, at least until Celtic faced Hearts in their fixture in Glasgow later in the afternoon.

And it meant that Pat Fenlon began his spell as Hibs manager with a defeat.

The former Bohemians boss was denied a victory last Friday after the Edinburgh side’s game at Motherwell was abandoned with Hibs leading 1-0 and it was no surprise that his starting line-up showed no changes.

Rangers manager Ally McCoist made three, one being forced on him following the controversial two-match ban handed to recent signing Sone Aluko after the forward was ruled to have dived during last week’s narrow win over Dunfermline Athletic.

Fit-again Carlos Bocanegra and Lee Wallace came in along with Lee McCulloch, with Thomas Bendiksen and Kirk Broadfoot dropping to the bench.

Rangers have struggled to score from open play since losing Steven Naismith for the rest of the season through injury.

Griffiths missed an excellent chance to give Hibs the lead

Also denied the services of Aluko and the injured Kyle Lafferty, it left only Jelavic up front and, with both sides adopting formations with two holding midfielders, a stuffy match was ensured.

Rangers nevertheless started brightly and dominated the early possession but were held at bay by some timely interceptions inside the home box.

It was Hibs who were first to seriously threaten, although Lewis Stevenson’s low 20-yard drive flashed across the face of goal wide.

Rangers were unfortunate to have Wallace pulled back for offside as the full-back was found in acres of space by a fine Gregg Wylde through ball.

Hibs should have taken the lead in stoppage time after Wallace failed with his attempt to clear Ivan Sproule’s cutback from the bye-line and the unmarked Griffiths fired weakly straight at goalkeeper Allan McGregor from 14 yards.

The home side took heart from that and Sproule sliced a long-range effort wide from the edge of the penalty area before the half-time whistle sounded.

Hibs came out with fresh fire in their bellies and immediately peppered the Rangers penalty box with dangerous crosses.

Rangers manager McCoist had seen enough and brought on Bendiksen for the ineffectual Kyle Bartley.

The Norwegian, who made his first start last weekend, immediately injected some extra thrust and creativity into the visiting midfield.

He was heavily involved in the move that led to Wallace winning the ball on the bye-line inside the penalty box and hitting the deck after having his arm grabbed by Hart.

Jelavic slotted in the resulting penalty kick inside the post with ease.

Hibs responded by putting the Rangers defence under intense pressure, with Paul Hanlon heading just over when he rose unchallenged 12 yards out to meet a Sproule free-kick.

However, Rangers snuffed out the threatened comeback when Jelavic lost marker Hart and stooped to finish off an inswinging Wylde corner.

McGregor scooped a deflected cross from Hanlon off the goal-line after the ball looped over the goalkeeper’s head, with Isaiah Osbourne slicing wide with the close-range follow-up as Hibs even failed to secure a late consolation.

Man Utd   4 – 1   Wolverhampton

Wayne Rooney & Danny Welbeck Rooney’s strike partnership with Welbeck is starting to blossom for United

Wayne Rooney and Nani both scored twice as Manchester United gave the perfect response to their Champions League exit with a commanding win over Wolves.

Nani cut inside from the left and blasted the opener into the corner before Rooney made it 2-0 with a low drive from the edge of the area.

Steven Fletcher gave Wolves a lifeline with a header just after half-time.

But United hit back with Antonio Valencia setting up Nani for a tap-in and crossing for Rooney to rifle home.

United put their miserable surrender in Basel behind them in a display brimming with positive intent and attacking verve.

And in the week when Rooney’s three-match England ban was reduced to two by European football’s governing body Uefa, the striker ended an eight-game Premier League goal drought with two authoritative finishes.

Ferguson’s tactics paid off as well, with Phil Jones producing a confident attacking performance alongside Michael Carrick in midfield and Valencia – brought in at Ashley Young’s expense – proving a constant threat on the right wing.

DID YOU KNOW?

When United were last eliminated from the Champions League group stage, in 2005, they went unbeaten in their next 10 matches in all competitions

The victory ensured United closed the gap on Premier League leaders Manchester City to two points, with Roberto Mancini’s side heading to Chelsea on Monday.

The game might have taken a different course had Fletcher not sliced wide after being teed up in space on the edge of the box in the first minute.

But United soon settled into their rhythm, with Valencia enjoying plenty of space down the right and crossing for Carrick, whose diving header flew just over the bar.

Carrick then played a ball inside right-back Ronald Zubar for Rooney, whose shot from a tight angle was sharply saved by Wayne Hennessey.

Moments later, Nani cut in from the left-hand side before unleashing a powerful shot into the corner from 20 yards.

The second goal arrived in similar fashion, with Rooney this time darting across the edge of the box and smashing a shot through a crowd of players past an unsighted Hennessey.

Wolves got themselves back in the game shortly after half-time as Matt Jarvis crossed from the left for Fletcher to head his 11th goal in 16 games into the roof of the net.

The goal only served to reawaken United, who re-established their two-goal lead when Jones threaded a pass to Valencia, who crossed low for Nani to convert from six yards.

Valencia rounded off a fine afternoon’s work with the assist for the fourth goal as his cross picked out Rooney to beat Hennessey with a powerful low shot on the turn.

Another marauding run from Jones almost produced a fifth goal but Hennessey did well to foil Federico Macheda at the near post.

Wolves’ sixth away league defeat in eight games leaves them just three points clear of the relegation zone.

Arsenal   1 – 0   Everton

Robin van Persie scores for Arsenal against Everton Van Persie has now scored 19 goals in all competitions this season

Robin van Persie scored a sensational volley to mark Arsenal’s 125th birthday with a victory over Everton that puts them fourth in the Premier League.

The Dutchman hit his 33rd league goal of the calendar year to move him three behind Alan Shearer’s record of 36.

It was Van Persie’s only opportunity during a stop-start match in which Theo Walcott, Gervinho and Aaron Ramsey squandered chances to open the scoring.

Everton went close late on but managed just one attempt on target all match.

Wenger relieved after important win

The result sees Arsenal leapfrog Chelsea – who face Manchester City on Monday – and occupy a Champions League spot for the first time this season.

They have now won seven of their last eight Premier League matches, taking 22 points from a possible 24, following a dreadful start to the campaign.

It was a fitting scoreline on the club’s landmark anniversary, and appropriate that Van Persie should get the winner.

Everton have still not won at Arsenal since 1996 and they now sit 12th in the table, with four defeats from their last six league matches.

While Gunners boss Arsene Wenger had warned his players against letting the pre-match festivities distract them from the task at hand, they clearly struggled for fluency early on.

Despite dominating possession and territory, they were being comfortably contained by Everton’s well-organised midfield and diligent back four.

In fact, it was the visitors who created the first chance of any note as a Wojciech Szczesny punch fell to Louis Saha and his drive was blocked in a goalmouth scramble.

Arsenal were playing without a recognised full-back – their defence comprising four centre-halves – and the lack of width was hindering their progress.

They instead began to probe with balls through the middle and it was with four such deliveries that they had chances to open the scoring.

First, former Toffee Mikel Arteta sent Walcott racing clear but instead of shooting he squared towards Ramsey, who was foiled by Tony Hibbert.

A similar situation saw Gervinho play in Van Persie rather than going for goal himself, only for the Dutchman to drift marginally offside.

Ramsey then curled over after being released by Alex Song and Gervinho was denied by the legs of Tim Howard.

Everton were now firmly on the back foot and it required some sharp work from Johnny Heitinga and Phil Jagielka to thwart Walcott and Thomas Vermaelen.

Moyes happy with display despite defeat

Arsenal pressed forward again after half-time but other than a venomous Walcott shot that Howard repelled with a fine one-handed save, the hosts offered little cutting edge.

Moyes replaced Saha with centre-back Sylvain Distin, leaving his team without a recognised striker, yet for a short period they were on top of their opponents.

Vermaelen’s last-ditch header prevented Tim Cahill from meeting a Leighton Baines cross at the back post while Phil Neville fired on to the roof of the net.

However, just as Wenger was preparing to introduce Andrey Arshavin and Tomas Rosicky, Van Persie struck – and how.

The 28-year-old watched Song’s lofted cross-field pass all the way on to his left boot and volleyed a superb low finish across Howard and in off the post.

It moved him to within one goal of Thierry Henry’s 34 in 2004 and Henry – honoured with a statue outside the stadium on Friday – rose from his seat in the stands to applaud Van Persie.

He almost made it two with a header before Everton applied some late pressure – substitute Conor McAleny drilling inches wide – but Arsenal were able to celebrate.

Everton manager David Moyes:

“We were fortunate to reach half-time at 0-0. At the break we sorted things out and were better in the second half.

“I’ve got to give credit to Van Persie, it was a great goal. We didn’t mean to give them chances but they’re a good team.

“Our team did brilliantly to be in the game. We stuck at it and did a good job. This is disappointing but we’ll think about the next game tomorrow.”

Ayr's Somerset Park

Ayr’s Somerset Park took a battering from storms on Thursday

Four Scottish Football League matches are postponed because of snow and ice, adding to Ayr v Ross County being called off due to storm damage.

Thursday’s high winds damaged the main stand at Ayr’s Somerset Park, meaning their game against the First Division leaders could not go ahead.

On Saturday, Brechin, Forfar, Clyde and Peterhead’s pitches failed inspections.

Arbroath’s visit to Cowdenbeath in Division Two goes ahead after Central Park passed a second inspection.

The Fife club, who sit top of the table on goal difference from their visitors, thanked more than 30 volunteers from the local community who helped clear a covering of snow off the pitch

However, the snow forced Cowden to close their terracing, which meant that entry would be limited to the main and old stand.

Heavy overnight snow was also cleared from the pitch at Recreation Park, allowing Alloa Athletic to host Queen’s Park in Division Three.

Dates have yet to be announced for the rescheduled games.
