No easy ride for England at Euros

England may have dodged the most dangerous group of all at the 2012 European Championship draw in Kiev’s Palace of Arts – but a glance at the opponents they must face in Ukraine will act as an instant shield against complacency.

The time-honoured “Group of Death” next summer will be that containing Netherlands, Denmark, Germany and Portugal – with Republic of Ireland also handed a tough assignment against Spain, Italy and Croatia.

It is one of the beauties of the Euros that there is little time for any team to get their eye in, so England coach Fabio Capello will only have felt slight relief at being drawn in Group D with co-hosts Ukraine, Sweden and France.

None make a compelling case to be ranked among the firm favourites for Euro 2012, but all will feel confident of making England’s route to the quarter-finals as treacherous as possible.

England must also overcome the logistical problems of basing themselves in Krakow in Poland while playing all their group matches in Ukraine, with the first game against France in Donetsk on 11 June, Sweden in Kiev four days later and then finishing off against the co-hosts back in Donetsk on 19 June.

The Football Association laid meticulous plans for such an eventuality and although Capello insisted straight after the draw that England will not abandon their Polish base, the Three Lions’ supporters face arduous journeys across Ukraine.

The initial reaction of optimism about England’s ambitions was partly prompted by avoiding the two toughest groups. Capello can be confident but history tells us there is a real warning already attached to their campaign.

Irrespective of the absence of Wayne Rooney, England’s finest player, through suspension, each opponent will believe they have realistic chances of seriously troubling Capello’s side.

France – rebuilding under Laurent Blanc after the unqualified fiasco of the World Cup in South Africa – are unbeaten in their last five games against England, winning four of them. It was only in November last year that France’s 2-1 win at Wembley did little justice to their superiority.

Sweden are old and difficult adversaries. England’s recent Wembley win was their first against them since 1968 and no matter how pedestrian they looked on that night the game will be raised in the competitive environment of Euro 2012.

Ukraine may be down at 55 in the Fifa rankings but any meeting with co-hosts is a guarantee of atmosphere and hostility. Oleg Blokhin’s team will be lifted by the home crowd, no matter how lowly they stand.

Stellar names are in short supply but they have an outstanding young talent in Dynamo Kiev’s Andrey Yarmolenko, who is their big hope with ageing legend Andrey Shevchenko troubled by injury.

Capello’s first competitive defeat was against Ukraine – he will hope this game is not his last as he prepares to leave his post.

Throw in England’s previous trouble with hosts, losing to Italy in 1980, Sweden in 1992 and on penalties to Portugal in 2004 and once again it proves any premature triumphalism can be dismissed instantly.

And even if England do manage to navigate a way out, the quarter-final will pit them against Spain, Italy, the Republic of Ireland or Croatia to underscore the ever-present difficulties lurking in the Euros.

Republic of Ireland manager Giovanni Trapattoni is one of the old masters of the coaching world and the great man will relish plotting a way past world and European champions Spain, his native country Italy and Croatia.

They will be outsiders in their group but, backed by the green army that will descend on Euro 2012, no-one should dismiss their chances. They have been carried along on that wave of support and passion before.

So the prospect of a quarter-final meeting between England and Republic is on the agenda – but much will need to happen and tough opponents will need to be overcome before that happens.

Manchester United’s Javier Hernandez suffers ankle ligament injury

Manchester United striker Javier Hernandez will be out for up to four weeks after tearing ankle ligaments.

The Mexican forward, who has scored six league goals this season, suffered the injury in the early stages of United’s 1-0 win at Aston Villa on Saturday.

“I think he’s torn ligaments in his ankle,” said manager Sir Alex Ferguson, whose side are five points behind Premier League leaders Manchester City.

“He’ll be out for between three and four weeks.”

Phil Jones delighted with first goal

Hernandez was one of three players forced off during the match at Villa Park, with Shay Given and Jermaine Jenas also picking up fairly innocuous injuries.

With Michael Owen and Dimitar Berbatov already ruled out until Christmas at least, it leaves Ferguson short up front.

He will, however, have been cheered by the return from injury of England international Danny Welbeck, who stepped from the bench at Villa Park.

“We’re having a bad time with injuries at the moment,” added Ferguson. “It’s just as well we’ve a strong squad.”

McLeish bemoans poor Villa passing

Brazilian twins Rafael and Fabio and midfielders Tom Cleverley and Anderson are also on the sidelines.

Villa manager Alex McLeish has worries of his own after goalkeeper Given and midfielder Jenas were both replaced during the match.

“I’m not sure but I think Shay had a little tweak in his hamstring. Hopefully it’s a grade one [tear] and will heal really quickly,” McLeish said.

“As for Jermaine, we don’t know, but we think he’s had an injury to his Achilles but we will wait until the morning to see.”

Blackburn boss Steve Kean asks for backing from protesters

Page last updated at 19:02 GMT, Saturday, 3 December 2011

Blackburn boss Steve Kean has asked protesting fans to get behind the team after his side beat Swansea to secure their second Premier League win of the season.

Yakubu scored all four goals in the 4-2 victory to lift Rovers off the bottom of the table, but even when the hosts were leading there were still chants during the game calling for Kean to leave his position.

And about 200 fans stayed after the match to register their disapproval both with the under-fire manager and club owners Venky’s.

Fans protest against Steve Kean inside Ewood Park

I’m not frustrated in the least. I’m very happy. My dressing room is bouncing. I might invite a few of [the protesters] into the dressing room and see that in there it doesn’t affect us at all

Steve Kean Blackburn manager

“I would like the majority of supporters to be vocal and say to the protesters, give the lads a chance,” Kean said.

“We’ve got a lot of young players in the team and it can certainly affect them if there’s a little bit of negativity aimed when you’re ahead and when you’re playing well, so I hope they can bear that in mind.

“We know there is a group who are not particularly happy but there must be other issues because I can’t fathom how when we are leading they are chanting, but that’s their prerogative.”

The win for Blackburn came after Kean suggested the match was one of four ‘cup finals’ that his side will face in coming weeks.

They now travel to Sunderland, before facing West Brom and Bolton at home.

And Kean said the momentum gained from the vital victory at Ewood Park would give them the momentum to climb the Premier League.

“I’m always positive and we now have a good run of games,” Kean added. “The best thing for us to do would be to pick up points, go on an unbeaten run and climb the table, and if they want to protest then, then there something else at the bottom of it.

Rodgers happy with Swansea progress

“I’m not frustrated in the least. I’m very happy. My dressing room is bouncing. I might invite a few of [the protesters] into the dressing room and see that in there it doesn’t affect us at all.”

Kean was given an improved contract by owners Venky’s two weeks ago, and in a further sign that protests were having little effect on the manager’s position, he will meet directors this week to discuss January transfer targets.

“We’d like to bring in another midfield player,” the Scot said. “We are a little bit light in midfield and have been since the start of the season. And we are always looking for a striker who can add to the goals.

“On the back of a win it is nice for everybody; the board members, the owners and myself, but the content of the meeting would have been the same.

“It’s about the transfer window, how we progress and how we strengthen the squad, so I would imagine it will probably be smiles over coffee [after the win] rather than frowns.”

Kean also paid tribute to Yakubu, who took his tally to 10 for the season, and became the first Blackburn player to score four goals in a Premier League match.

He said: “The good thing about Yakubu is he scores lots of different types of goals, penalties, tap-ins, ones like the first one today, he’s a fantastic signing.

“But he would be the first to tell you that any striker is as good as his service and the service we are giving to him from Junior Hoilett, Ruben Rochina and Mauro Formica is excellent.

“It’s like the old chant, if you feed him in the box he will score. I’m delighted to give him the match ball today because it’s the first time any Blackburn player has scored four goals in the Premier League and to get that when there has been such choice names at the club, is fantastic.”

Rangers   2 – 1   Dunfermline

Nikica Jelavic and Kirk Broadfoot Jelavic celebrates his converted penalty with Kirk Broadfoot

Rangers moved seven points clear at the top of the Scottish Premier League after a nervous win over Dunfermline.

Alex Keddie’s own goal gave Rangers the lead before Nikica Jelavic’s penalty doubled the advantage.

But Joe Cardle reduced the Pars’ deficit before half-time with an impressive strike.

Goalkeeper Paul Gallacher denied Jelavic in the second half and Andrew Barrowman and Keddie missed good chances to level for Dunfermline.

Second-place Celtic can reduce the gap back to four points if they beat Dundee United on Sunday while the Pars slip one place to 11th in the table, a point above bottom club Aberdeen.

Rangers started positively with Sone Aluko driving at the Dunfermline defence early on and setting up Jelavic, who shot wide from six yards.

Jelavic was off-target again minutes later when he got his head to a Steven Davis cross.

Aluko could not keep his shot down before Gregg Wylde’s drive was brilliantly saved by Gallacher.

But despite the growing pressure from the hosts it was a Dunfermline player who gave Rangers the lead and through little fault of his own.

Gallacher could have picked the ball up but elected to kick it hastily and Keddie inadvertedly diverted the ball into the net.

The piercing runs of Aluko continued to cause the visitors problems and the winger won a spot-kick when he was adjudged to have been tripped by Gary Mason.

Jelavic converted by firing high into the net from 12 yards.

Dunfermline stemmed the tide with a rare foray forward and found themselves back in the match through Cardle’s strike.

The winger retrieved Martin Hardie’s pass, cut inside and beat Allan McGregor at his near post.

Rangers tried to reassert themselves and Davis stung the palms of Gallacher before Wylde hammered a shot across the face of goal.

Aluko’s attempt was blocked by Keddie in the opening moments of the second half and then Jelavic headed wide from Wylde’s delivery.

Gallacher made another important block to turn a Jelavic shot wide.

The Pars pressed for an equaliser and Cardle’s cross found Barrowman in the six-yard box only for the striker to blast over.

Kyle Lafferty, a replacement for debutant Thomas Kind Bendiksen, headed into the arms of Gallacher and then fired wide from Aluko’s pass.

Aluko was next to miss the target, his 20-yard drive rising over the bar.

Keddie headed over from Pat Clarke’s late corner and with that Dunfermline’s chances of taking a point evaporated.
