Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp to have minor heart surgery

Tottenham have confirmed manager Harry Redknapp is to have minor heart surgery on Wednesday.

The 64-year-old was admitted to hospital on Tuesday night for tests and will have an operation on a minor blockage in one of his arteries.

Redknapp is unable to travel with the Tottenham squad to Russia for their Europa League fixture against Rubin Kazan on Thursday.

Spurs are in top spot in Group A, two points ahead of Greek side PAOK.

Assistant manager Kevin Bond and first-team coach Joe Jordan will assume first-team duties in Redknapp’s absence.

It is not known how long Redknapp will be away from work, though an update is expected later on Wednesday at the club’s news conference in Russia.

Redknapp told the Sun on Wednesday he was confident the problem would not stop him taking charge of Sunday’s Premier League match at Fulham.

He said: “I’m hoping I can be back at work again in a couple of days.

John Terry to face police investigation over race allegations

The Metropolitan Police has begun a formal investigation into allegations that Chelsea captain John Terry racially abused QPR’s Anton Ferdinand.

Terry, 30, has categorically denied aiming a racist slur at defender Ferdinand during Chelsea’s 1-0 loss at Loftus Road on 23 October.

The Police spent a week “assessing” a complaint from a member of the public before announcing an investigation.

The Football Association (FA) is also looking into the incident.

Some viewers claimed video replays from the match at Loftus Road showed Terry using racist language, while the FA said it had received a complaint.

Race-row timeline

  • 23 Oct – QPR beat Chelsea 1-0 in bad-tempered match
  • 25 Oct – QPR discuss with Anton Ferdinand allegations the Chelsea skipper racially abused him. Metropolitan Police assess allegations. Terry denies claims. Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas says the matter is over
  • 26 Oct – FA begins investigation. Terry vows to clear name
  • 28 Oct – Chelsea fined £20,000 for failing to control players
  • 31 Oct – Ferdinand says he has “strong feelings” on case but won’t comment until after FA investigation
  • 1 Nov – Metropolitan Police begin formal investigation after assessing evidence

A Metropolitan Police statement said: “Police were notified of an incident on Sunday, October 23 involving alleged racial abuse. This is currently being investigated by officers from Hammersmith and Fulham.”

On Monday, Ferdinand gave a statement to the FA saying he has “very strong” feelings on the matter, but will not elaborate until the FA inquiry has been concluded.

The move means the FA’s investigation into the allegation cannot be completed until the outcome of the police investigation.

An FA statement read: “Further to an allegation from the recent QPR versus Chelsea fixture, The Football Association has been formally investigating the matter.

“The Metropolitan Police has contacted The FA to make us further aware of their investigation into the matter.

“Due to this it would be inappropriate for The FA to comment until the Police have completed their own enquiries.

“Therefore, The FA will make no further comment at this time.”

Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas earlier stated that a post-match conversation between Terry and Ferdinand had marked “the end of the story”.

In a statement following the Blues’ loss at Loftus Road, Terry described the incident as a “misunderstanding” and claimed that his accusers “have leapt to the wrong conclusions about the context of what I was seen to be saying”.

He added: “I would never say such a thing – and I’m saddened that people would think so.”

Terry was selected as a substitute for Chelsea’s Champions League match at Genk on Tuesday.

Jelle Vossen equalises for Genk Vossen struck Genk’s first goal in this season’s Champions League

Chelsea carried their inconsistent Premier League form into Europe as they were held to a disappointing draw by Genk in Champions League Group E.

Ramires put the Blues ahead after a neat exchange with Fernando Torres before Raul Meireles hit the crossbar.

A Thomas Buffel handball gave Chelsea the chance to double their lead but David Luiz’s penalty was easily saved.

The Blues were punished when Jelle Vossen scored, while Frank Lampard and Florent Malouda had chances to win it.

Lampard was guilty of an awful miss after a fine run and cross by fellow substitute Daniel Sturridge, and Malouda’s effort was scrambled off the line.

The result means Chelsea will qualify for the knockout stage if they win at Bayer Leverkusen on 23 November, but anything less could see it go down to the final round of matches.

Having been shocked by QPR and Arsenal of late, the Blues arrived in Belgium wounded by what boss Andre Villas-Boas termed a “disastrous week”.

The consequence was five changes to his line-up as John Terry, Lampard, Juan Mata and Sturridge dropped to the bench and John Mikel Obi missed out entirely.

Genk were thrashed 5-0 at Stamford Bridge a fortnight ago but, desperate to secure a first win in 10 attempts at this level, they looked dangerous early on.

However, Chelsea held firm and soon began to display glimpses of the attacking principles that Villas-Boas has insisted they will not relinquish despite their recent troubles.

Ramires saw a tame shot saved while Cole and Nicolas Anelka tested the Genk defence with dangerous crosses from both flanks.

The Blues were controlling possession and they duly opened the scoring, with Ramires playing a one-two with Torres before slotting underneath Laszlo Koteles.

Chelsea suddenly looked a team brimming with confidence and Torres drilled narrowly wide, Ramires headed off target and Meireles fired against the bar from 25 yards.

They were then gifted a chance to extend their advantage when Buffel blatantly handled a Malouda cross inside the box.

In the absence of Lampard, Luiz stepped up but Koteles dived to his right and comfortably saved the Brazilian’s spot kick.

That gave Genk the momentum going into half-time and the hosts carried that into the second period.

Chelsea keeper Petr Cech gathered a low effort from Kevin De Bruyne – a reported Blues target – and then did even better to deflect a goalbound strike from Kennedy Nwanganga to safety.

But Genk were now stirring and it came as little surprise when they levelled.

De Bruyne fed Fabien Camus down the left and the Tunisian’s cut-back was swept past Cech by Vossen with the aid of a slight deflection off Cole.

In a bid to regain control, Villas-Boas introduced Lampard and Sturridge for Ramires and Anelka and the move seemed to spark Chelsea into life.

Meireles headed straight at Koteles, Lampard fluffed his lines and a Sturridge drive was tipped over the bar.

Late on, Genk substitute Anthony Limbombe was foiled by Cech and Malouda denied by Anele Ngongca, whose goal-line clearance hit Nadson and trickled inches wide.

Genk were able to celebrate a hard-earned point, but for Chelsea it was another missed opportunity.
