Chelsea FC lose fan vote on stadium
Bruce Buck says the Chelsea board will meet to consider its future options
Chelsea have lost a vote to buy back their own stadium from a group owned by their fans.
Only 61.5% of shareholders in Chelsea Pitch Owners voted in favour of selling the freehold for the club’s Stamford Bridge stadium back to the club.
Approval of 75% of the shareholders was needed to pass the proposal.
CPO acquired the freehold to the stadium in 1997 to protect Stamford Bridge from developers should the club run into financial difficulties.
Chelsea had wanted to buy the stadium in order to facilitate a possible move to a new stadium and redevelopment of the site.
However, many fans opposed the move from the club’s current location where it has been based for more than a century.
“Chelsea FC is naturally disappointed with the result. While we will remain as ambitious as ever, this decision could slow down our progress,” the club said in a statement.
The club maintains no decision has been made on a move, even if the club does buy the stadium.
The club feels that Stamford Bridge’s current capacity of 42,000 puts Chelsea at a financial disadvantage compared with rivals such as Arsenal whose new stadium holds 60,000.

Family fortunes can keep Rangers on top, says Nikica Jelavic

RANGERS star Nikica Jelavic isn’t surprised to see Ally McCoist’s happy family ruling the roost in the SPL.
The Croat came off the bench to grab the clincher as Gers beat Hearts 2-0 on Sunday to make it 13 straight away wins in the league.
McCoist’s side haven’t even conceded a goal on the road in the SPL this term with new boys Carlos Bocanegra and Dorin Goian building an impressive partnership.
That stunning away form has helped the champions open up a commanding lead in the title race.
And Jelavic believes it’s all down to the brilliant team spirit at Ibrox.
He told Blues News: “Hearts is always a hard place to go but we showed team spirit and character.
“Now we need to look forward to the next game with Aberdeen on Saturday.
“The whole team showed we are like a family. We stick together, especially in central defence with Carlos and Dorin.
“They are fantastic players and Allan McGregor has also saved us many times.”
Jelavic shook off a bug to feature at Tynecastle and netted a superb volley just moments after coming on.
He said: “I took a first touch and scored. Easy. Simple!
“It was a great long pass from Carlos and I just concentrated on the ball.”

Pre-organised violence broke out after Wednesday night’s Scottish Communities League Cup football match, police have said.
Celtic and Hibs fans clashed following the Glasgow side’s 4-1 quarter final victory at Easter Road in Edinburgh.
Shortly before 9pm Celtic fans on a coach parked outside the International Bar on Brougham Place started vandalising the vehicle from the inside, breaking three windows.
A fight then broke out between fans on the bus and Hibs fans outside.
Two men, aged 22 and 23, who were passengers on the coach, were taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary with minor head injuries.
Detective Sergeant Mike Leask said: “This disorder has been pre-organised by those involved in football-related violence and has resulted in two men requiring hospital treatment.
“The coach also sustained significant damage and the disturbance will have undoubtedly unsettled local residents and businesses.
“Lothian and Borders Police will not tolerate violence and disorder in any form and are currently carrying out a robust investigation to identify everyone involved in last night’s incident.
“Last month, officers made numerous arrests across Edinburgh and East Lothian as part of a post-match operation following disorder at a friendly match in August.
“The public can rest assured we will be undertaking similar enquiries to bring these culprits to justice and anyone who can assist with our investigation is asked to contact police immediately.”
