England's Wayne Rooney

Rooney lashes out on Dzudovic to receive his marching orders

England qualified for the 2012 European Championship after drawing with Montenegro but will be without Wayne Rooney for their opening game after he was sent off in the second half.

Fabio Capello’s side took the lead on 11 minutes when Ashley Young headed in before Young set up Darren Bent.

The hosts got a goal back through Elsad Zverotic and drew level in injury time via Andrija Delibasic’s header.

Rooney saw red for kicking Miodrag Dzudovic on 73 minutes.

The dismissal capped a poor second-half showing by the visitors, where Montenegro attacked with far more purpose.

Rooney could miss more than the opening fixture in Poland and Ukraine if Uefa decide his sending off merits a greater suspension.

Euro 2012: Wales 2-0 Switzerland

Wales striker Steve Morison congratulates goal-scorer Gareth Bale

Wales striker Steve Morison congratulates goal-scorer Gareth Bale

Wales leapt off the bottom of Group G as Aaron Ramsey’s penalty in Swansea set them on their way to a second Euro 2012 qualifying victory.

The game turned in the 55th minute when Switzerland’s Reto Ziegler was sent-off for sliding in on Chris Gunter.

Moments later Gunter was upended in the area by Timm Klose and captain Ramsey stepped up to score from the spot.

Gareth Bale made the game safe with a second Wales goal, racing clear after Steve Morison’s clever reverse pass.

The win, only Wales’ second over the Swiss in seven encounters, now gives Gary Speed’s side hope of finishing third in the group.

A win in Bulgaria on Tuesday night, coupled with Switzerland losing their home tussle with Montenegro, will see Wales finish in a position that seemed improbable after their poor start to the campaign.

Switzerland suffered a set-back in the warm-up when Fulham’s Philippe Senderos pulled out to be replaced by Steve von Bergen at centre-back.

The Cesena defender made a bad start to his unexpected opportunity, earning a yellow card after just three minutes for hauling down Steve Morison as the Norwich striker broke down the left.

Switzerland right-back Stephan Lichtsteiner caught the eye early, as the Juventus player roved down the wing to cause consternation in the Welsh defence.

But the visitors, needing victory to keep alive their play-off hopes, also endure an uncomfortable moment when Darcy Blake found himself unmarked but headed well wide.

Ramsey thumped a shot soundly into the midriff of Diego Benaglio and the Wales captain then combined well with Bale, but the final pass to the waiting Morison was easily intercepted.

Switzerland carved out good chances of their own when captain Gökhan Inler broke into the Welsh area and it took a sliding tackle from Ashley Williams to deny him, then moments later Eren Derdiyok sent a looping header over the bar.

Nine minutes before the break Morison seemed certain to break the deadlock as he took a high ball down and spun to shoot from eight yards, but somehow Benaglio got a flailing arm in the way to Wales’ disbelief.

Back came Switzerland and Derdiyok had Wayne Hennessey scrambling across his goal as the Bayer Leverkusen forward’s shot curled just wide.

Just before the break there was moment of concern when Bale went down heavily under a tackle from Valon Behrami clutching his knee, but the Tottenham man came back on – albeit a little gingerly.

Switzerland almost took the lead soon after the restart as Joe Allen, making his first start for Wales, made a rare error and was robbed of possession.

Derdiyok galloped into the box but Allen’s Swansea team-mate Neil Taylor recovered well to snuff out the danger, although at the cost of a corner.

The linesman’s flag then saved Wales as Derdiyok was marginally off-side as he headed home a free-kick.

Bale had a strong claim for a penalty turned down as he threaded his way through three defenders and seemed to go over Behrami’s outstretched leg.

Referee Björn Kuipers had another difficult decision soon after as Ziegler slid in high on Gunter and the Dutch official brandished a straight red card for the high, studs-up challenge.

A third key moment in five breathless minutes followed and Gunter was again involved as the Nottingham Forest right-back cut into the area only to be scythed down by Timm Klose.

This time Kuipers pointed to the spot and Ramsey stepped up to convert the penalty, although Benaglio again came close to stopping it.

To their credit Wales were not content to sit back and defend their slender lead against the understrength visitors and were rewarded with a second goal.

Some energetic harrying won back possession and Morison had the vision to push the ball around the corner into the path of the on-rushing Bale, who gave Benaglio no chance with an expert left-foot finish into the far corner.

Morison, Bellamy and the brilliant Bale threatened to add a third as the clock ticked down, although Behrami almost gave Switzerland a late consolation as his shot across Hennessey hit the base of the post

But Wales now go to Sofia on Tuesday night in good heart against a Bulgaria side who have now replaced them at the bottom of Group G.

N Ireland 1-2 Estonia

Steven Davis scores his fourth international goal at Windsor Park

Steven Davis scores his fourth international goal at Windsor Park

Northern Ireland’s miserable Euro 2012 qualifying campaign continued as Estonia came from a goal down to secure victory at Windsor Park.

Steven Davis reacted quickest to fire home from Kyle Lafferty’s low right-wing cross in the 21st minute.

Estonia levelled after 76 minutes when Konstantin Vassiljev scored a penalty after being fouled by Craig Cathcart.

Vassiljev found the net with a 30-yard shot into the top corner on 84 after the referee overruled an offside flag.

The first chance of the game fell to Tarmo Kink in the ninth minute but his 20-yard left-foot shot was pushed round the post by Lee Camp.

Northern Ireland controlled large periods of the first half and were almost rewarded for their early superiority in the 15th minute, but Grant McCann saw his left-foot strike palmed away by Sergei Pareiko.

Davis opened the scoring when Lafferty crossed and the Rangers midfielder was first to the ball after Pareiko could only parry the ball.

For Davis, it was his fourth international goal on the occasion of his 50th cap.

Pareiko showed better handling skills to hold onto Pat McCourt’s fizzing effort and Gareth McAuley had his shot blocked after going on a marauding run from defence.

Estonia looked sharper after the break, Camp saving well from Kink and then Sergei Zenjov beating the offside trap but firing wide with only the home goalkeeper to beat.

Soon after, Lafferty earned a yellow card for leading with his arm, a booking which rules him out of his side’s final qualifier against Italy.

Substitute Corry Evans headed over the bar as Nigel Worthington’s men sought the second goal which should have made the three points safe.

The visitors responded and Dmitri Kruglov almost levelled in the 71st minute but the midfielder skewed his shot just wide after meeting a corner.

Zenjov then unleashed a left-foot drive but Camp was equal to the task.

Estonia deservedly equalised in the 76th minute when Craig Cathcart tugged at the shirt of Vassiljev inside the area and the striker picked himself up to score from the penalty spot.

Vassiljev grabbed his second with a stunning 30-yard shot into the top corner with six minutes remaining.

The referee’s assistant put his flag up for offside but German referee Manuel Grafe waved play on and Vassiljev found the net, with the Northern Ireland defence static.

The result heaps further pressure on under-fire manager Worthington as his side boast just nine points from nine qualifying games so far.
