Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere out for months after ankle surgery

Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere will be out of action until Christmas as his ankle injury has not responded to treatment.

The England player sustained the injury in the Gunners’ pre-season friendly against New York Red Bulls on 31 July.

It was only expected to rule him out for a short while, but has proved far more troublesome for the 19-year-old.

“The bone is not responding. I will have surgery on my right ankle on Monday,” Wilshere wrote on Twitter.

“Hopefully I will return to action around Christmas time. I am in good hands! Thanks for your support everyone!”, he added.

Arsenal released a statement on their website saying: “Wilshere has recently been wearing a protective boot aimed at allowing a stress fracture of the ankle time to heal naturally and avoid surgery.

“However, scans this week have revealed that the fracture has not responded positively during this period.

“Throughout Jack’s injury, the club has been guided by the continuous advice of several world-renowned specialists. The information attained this week has led to the conclusion that surgery is now required to gain an optimal response.

“Wilshere is now expected to be out for a period of months. Following surgery these timescales will become more specific.”

Wilshere’s absence adds to the disappointment surrounding the start of the season at the Emirates Stadium. After losing key midfielders Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri, Arsene Wenger’s side lie 17th in the Premier League table having lost three of their first five matches.

ENGLAND 2010-11: 5

On the plus side, the arrivals of Yossi Benayoun and Mikel Arteta have strengthened Arsenal’s midfield. On Friday Wenger said he had not given up hope of winning the title, despite the poor start to the campaign.

Wilshere was wearing a protective boot to guard the affected right ankle, which Wenger claims was first damaged when the midfielder was on England duty against Switzerland in June.

Wenger won his running battle with England Under-21 counterpart Stuart Pearce over Wilshere’s selection for the summer’s European Championships in Denmark, but the rest he was able to enjoy in the close season was not sufficient to cure the problem.

Man City 2-0 Everton

Manchester City finally released the recent stranglehold Everton have placed on them with a hard-fought victory at Etihad Stadium.

Everton had won on their last four visits to City – and for an hour frustration was in the air again as they mounted a wall of well-organised resistance that kept Roberto Mancini’s side at bay.

The introduction of substitute Mario Balotelli on the hour led to the breakthrough as he scored with a deflected shot after 68 minutes and finally unsettled Everton with an impressive cameo.

James Milner, another second-half substitute, added the second with two minutes left from David Silva’s sublime pass to allow City to move top of the Premier League ahead of Manchester United’s visit to Stoke City.

Balotelli decided the game – Mancini

And it was a win City deserved for demonstrating the patience and persistence they will need as Everton’s dour approach is likely to be mirrored by plenty of sides who will attempt to suppress City’s wide range of attacking options at Etihad Stadium.

Everton’s tactics appeared designed to secure a draw and perhaps aim to take an isolated chance on the break.

But David Moyes’ side were undermined by a failure to offer anything in attack, although substitute Louis Saha – and his manager – were rightly infuriated when referee Howard Webb failed to award a free-kick when he was blatantly fouled on the edge of the area by Vincent Kompany with the game still in the balance.

Moyes also believed Everton had been the victims of injustice in the build-up to Balotelli’s crucial goal, claiming City were wrongly awarded a throw in.

KEY MATCH FACTS

  • Sergio Aguero now has a combined total of 10 Premier League goals/assists
  • Balotelli’s goal was the third by a Man City sub this season
  • Everton have had 71 red cards in the Premier League – one fewer than Blackburn who have had the most

Mancini will relish the manner of this win as much as other victories earned in real style this season. Everton offered a stern test and City showed growing maturity to get the three points.

Everton’s superbly drilled defensive formation offered nothing other than frustration to City in the first half as they stood firm.

Moyes had clearly earmarked Silva as central to City’s threat and he deployed youngster Jack Rodwell to man-mark the Spaniard. And when he received a yellow card for a foul on Silva responsibility briefly switched to Phil Neville, until he drew similar punishment from referee Webb after a clash with Silva.

Sergio Aguero was City’s main threat in the early exchanges, but it was the 53rd minute before Everton posed a serious threat as Tim Cahill’s header from Seamus Coleman’s cross floated over the bar.

It was only when Balotelli came on for Edin Dzeko on the hour that City made serious inroads into the Everton defence. Samir Nasri had a shot well saved by Tim Howard before the Italian broke the deadlock seven minutes after his introduction.

Moyes applauds dogged defending

Balotelli’s finish from the edge of the area was measured and also took a decisive touch off Everton defender Phil Jagielka to send the ball tantalisingly out of Howard’s reach into the bottom corner.

The visitors now needed to shift the entire emphasis of their approach, but City were playing with renewed confidence and Silva hit the woodwork with Howard beaten.

Balotelli was then narrowly off target before setting up Silva for a tap-in, only for the goal to be ruled out for offside.

Silva was at his creative best as City wrapped up the win with one minute left. Everton substitute Royston Drenthe lost possession in midfield and Silva threaded through a perfect invitation for Milner to slide his finish past Howard.

Everton had offered next to nothing in terms of attacking threat, although another City substitute Stefan Savic made a timely intervention in injury time to clear Marouane Fellaini’s shot off the line.

Rangers bounced back from their shock Scottish Communities League Cup exit to Falkirk in style with a convincing 4-0 win over Dunfermline in the Clydesdale Bank Premier League.

Steven Naismith netted a double and Carlos Bocanegra and Maurice Edu grabbed a goal each as the Scottish champions responded positively to the midweek defeat against the Irn-Bru First Division side.

The win at East End Park allowed Rangers to extend their lead at the summit to seven points ahead of nearest rivals Celtic’s game later in the day and was also the perfect 49th birthday present for boss Ally McCoist.

Rangers needed a positive reaction following their cup exit and had the chance to pile on some early pressure when Kyle Lafferty won a free-kick 25 yards out.

Gregg Wylde sent a swerving effort into the box and was only denied the opener by a decent save from goalkeeper Paul Gallacher, who reacted quickly to push the set-piece past his left-hand post.

But he was left picking the ball out of the back of the net with just eight minutes gone when Rangers took the lead from the resultant corner. Steven Davis picked out Carlos Bocanegra who connected well to nod past Gallacher and claim his first goal for the club.

Rangers doubled their advantage after 17 minutes when Edu collected a short pass from Jelavic and sent an impressive volley past the helpless Gallacher from 20 yards.

Rangers continued to push forward in search of more goals and Naismith was not too far away with a shot that fizzed narrowly past the upright.

At the other end, Dunfermline carved out their first real chance when Gary Mason’s cross was met by Ryan Thomson and his header was touched just over by a full-stretch McGregor.

There was concern for Rangers when Dorin Goian went down injured during the build-up to that chance and left the pitch on a stretcher before returning to the action following treatment on the sidelines.

Rangers could have added to their lead when Jelavic set up Davis but his poor header fell wide of target, before Wylde tested Gallacher with an effort that the goalkeeper initially spilled before recovering to smother.

Dunfermline’s hopes of a comeback in the second half were dealt a blow when Rangers found the back of the net again just six minutes after the restart.

Naismith raced on to a pass from Davis and kept his cool to stroke past Gallacher from 12 yards.

Steven Whittaker came within inches of adding his name to the scoresheet with a well-struck shot from distance that dipped just over the crossbar.

Dunfermlinecould have pulled a goal back when David Graham found himself with only McGregor to beat but the goalkeeper was up to the task with an impressive block.

It was proving to be a busy afternoon for Gallacher who was called into action to force a Jelavic free-kick over, before denying a ferocious effort from Whittaker.

But he was unable to prevent Naismith from claiming his second of the day with nine minutes remaining.

Daviswent on a great run before finding Jelavic, who whipped the ball across the face of goal for Naismith to rifle home from close range

La narrazione delle principali trasferte può facilmente diventare il paradigma per descrivere centinaia di giornate nelle quali le firms hanno esportato all’estero il loro bagaglio di fedeltà, nazionalismo, alcoolismo e, spesso, anche violenza.
