Hearts fan cleared of sectarian attack on Neil Lennon

Celtic manager ‘utterly disheartened’ after jury returns a not proven verdict on John Wilson

A jury has returned a not proven verdict after a Hearts fan was accused of assaulting Celtic manager Neil Lennon in a sectarian attack.

John Wilson had been accused of a racially aggravated assault on Neil Lennon at a match between Hearts and Celtic at Tynecastle on May 11.

However, a jury at Edinburgh Sheriff Court found Wilson guilty of breach of the peace.

Sources close to Mr Lennon told STV News that the Celtic manager was “utterly disheartened” by the verdict.

During evidence, Wilson, a father-of-three, accepted a series of allegations put to him by defence advocate David Nicholson.

He agreed that he ran on to the field of play, ran at the away team dug-out, shouted, swore and caused annoyance and disturbance.

He also admitted lunging at former Northern Ireland player Lennon, and striking him on the head during a “moment of madness”.

But Wilson, who told the court he has learning disabilities, insisted he had not made a sectarian remark. He denied calling Mr Lennon a “f***** b******”, saying he instead called the Celtic boss a “f***ing w*****”.

Darlington Arena football violence yob burst into tears, court is told

A FOOTBALL fan was so ashamed when he saw footage of himself taking part in a pitch invasion he burst into tears, a court heard yesterday.

X was one of three Newcastle United fans banned from attending all UK football matches for three years after running on the pitch during a pre-season friendly at Darlington.

X, Y, and Z admitted entering a football pitch without authorisation and committing public order offences during the match at The Northern Echo Arena on Friday, July 15.

All three appeared at Darlington Magistrates’ Court yesterday. A 17-year-old youth from South Tyneside, who cannot be named for legal reasons, has been charged with the same offences and will appear at Darlington Youth Court on Friday.

The court heard how the men initially ran on the pitch to congratulate Newcastle player Sammy Ameobi after he scored his team’s second goal.

All three men, who were not together, left the pitch, but then returned and became involved in a brawl between Darlington and Newcastle fans.

Jonathan Bambro, prosecuting, told the court that jobless Watts was seen kicking a number of men and was arrested by police as he left the ground. Gerry Bass, in mitigation, said Watts went on the pitch to congratulate Ameobi but, “fuelled by drink, was pulled into something else with the Darlington fans”.

He said: “When X was shown footage of what he did, he cried. He thinks he should be punished.”

X s was given a 12-month community order, told to carry out 120 hours of community service and banned from attending football matches for three years.

Y, an apprentice electrician, was seen by police kicking another man. He had been arrested in Newcastle five days earlier for being drunk and disorderly.

Mr Bass, also mitigating for Y s, said the defendant was upset by his actions.

He was banned from football matches for three years, fined £100 for invading the pitch, £100 for a public order offence and ordered to pay £100 in court costs.

Z admitted a lesser public order offence and, as well as the same three-year ban, was fined £90 and ordered to pay 100 pounds in cout costs.
