Arsenal   1 – 0   Udinese

Gervinho (left) and Theo Walcott

Walcott opened the scoring early on at the Emirates Stadium

Arsenal started life after Cesc Fabregas with a slender victory over Udinese in the Champions League qualifier first leg at Emirates Stadium.

Theo Walcott’s early goal ultimately proved decisive – but Francesco Guidolin’s Serie A side deserved at least a draw for their enterprise and will pose a real danger in the return in Italy next Wednesday.

Arsenal, with Fabregas finally reunited with Barcelona and stripped of injured Jack Wilshere, lacked their usual craft and the lively Gervinho was often forced to fight a lone battle up front with newly-appointed captain Robin van Persie suspended.

And Udinese almost took advantage of a disjointed display as they came close to scoring an away goal on several occasions, with veteran skipper Antonio di Natale a constant threat to the Gunners’ defence.

Arsenal were fortunate when he hit the woodwork twice in the first half and brought an athletic stop from keeper Wojciech Szczesny, who also saved well from Pablo Armero in the first half, late on as Arsenal were forced to suffer to protect their narrow advantage.

Walcott almost added a second in injury time only to see his close-range shot brilliantly saved by Udinese keeper Samir Handanovic, but such a margin would have been cruel on the Italians.

  • Arsenal have now won all nine of their Champions League qualifiers.
  • Arsenal have won their last 21 home matches in Europe when leading at half time, keeping 15 clean sheets in the process.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger cut an agitated figure as he watched from the stands while serving a touchline ban, and Udinese’s celebrations with their fans at the final whistle suggests they are confident of overcoming the deficit at home.

Arsenal’s depleted side craved an early goal to lift the spirits with Fabregas gone and Samir Nasri heavily linked with a move to Manchester City and it arrived after four minutes when Walcott applied a perfect near-post finish to Aaron Ramsey’s cross.

Udinese settled swiftly after and troubled an Arsenal defence that carried an air of vulnerability that was in sharp contrast to their inventive attacking play.

Di Natale, Serie A’s top scorer for the past two seasons, curled a free-kick against the bar before Pablo Armero strode through Arsenal’s defence with embarrassing ease on a 50-yard run that ended with Szczesny making a vital block.

Gervinho and Walcott, in front of watching England coach Fabio Capello, were prominent for Arsenal but Udinese grew in confidence and the dangerous Di Natale grazed the outside of the post as the Italians sensed growing anxiety in the Gunners’ defence and the crowd.

Johan Djourou came on for Kieran Gibbs, who suffered a hamstring strain, at the interval but he only had time to put in a crucial tackle on Di Natale as he looked poised to equalise before he suffered a similar injury and was replaced by teenage summer signing Carl Jenkinson.

Udinese dominated possession, with Mauricio Isla shooting across the face of goal – but Walcott had a chance to extend Arsenal’s advantage with 20 minutes left, only to finish tamely and off target.

The lively Di Natale had Szczesny stretching again to turn away another precise free-kick that was heading for the top corner with 16 minutes left before the final opportunity came and went for Walcott.

Arsenal’s pleasure at the final whistle was tinged with relief after an anxious night that left Wenger simply grateful for the victory.

Football fans will be kept apart at Shay after trouble

editorial image

Opposing fans will be separated for Halifax Town matches for the rest of the season following unpleasant scenes on Saturday.

Several Corby Town fans were ejected from the east stand, which they shared with Halifax fans, during the season opener.

One Corby fan was removed during the first half for using foul and abusive language towards Halifax players and supporters, while three more were ejected after supporters moved towards the pitch following Corby’s second goal.

A Security Industry Authority steward was bitten by one of the fans as he tried to escort him from ground.

There was also a clash between Town fans and Corby fans after the game.

As a result, Ronnie Cowgill, ground safety officer at the Shay, said: “From now on, whether it’s five, 55 or 105, away fans will definitely be put in the west stand and there will be no problems.”

He also rejected claims from some supporters that the SIA stewards caused more problems than they solved as tempers began to fray during Town’s 3-1 defeat.

“I beg to differ,” he said. “One of them was bitten on the arm but he didn’t retaliate or use physical violence, despite the abuse.

“From this season it is a legal requirement to have them at the ground to be on the bars where alcohol is served, that’s the primary reason they’re there. You can’t have a normal steward on the bar.

“The second is that they’re much cheaper than getting the police to cover matches. Using these stewards saves the club a lot of money,” he said.

“The SIA stewards only get involved in extreme circumstances.”

Gary Byrnes, sports services manager at Calderdale Council, said: “The stewards who ejected the supporters are fully qualified security personnel and although not employed by the council they are supported by council officers.

“While ejecting the Corby spectator two of the stewards were assaulted while trying to deal with these incidents.

“After the game there was some fighting between home and away fans. The stewards acted as peacemakers to ensure no one got seriously injured.

“These type of incidents are very rare at the Shay and there will be a meeting of the safety team to put plans in action to prevent future issues.”

Rangers sign Alejandro Bedoya

American midfielder will join the Ibrox club immediately rather than waiting for end of contract move.

17 August 2011 15:20 GM

Alejandro Bedoya will join Rangers immediately after they agreed a fee with Orebro over the player’s transfer.

The American midfielder had already signed a pre-contract agreement to switch to Ibrox when his current deal expires but Rangers had been in negotiations to sign the player now rather than wait until January.

Those discussions have now been concluded with Rangers confirming the transfer, with Bedoya beginning his three-year deal early.

It remains to be seen whether the 24-year-old will travel to Slovenia to be part of Ally McCoist’s squad for the Europa League play-off round tie with Maribor, with Rangers having until 11pm on Wednesday night to add him to their pool.

“It’s been a long process but we are very happy for Bedoya to have the opportunity to play for a club like Rangers,” Orebro’s director Magnus Skoldmark told STV. “We are glad for him.

“This move will be a big development in his career. Bedoya has a winning mentality. He is a hard working midfielder and we have used him in various positions.

“Rangers fans can expect this player to cover the whole of the pitch. He is always looking to go forward.”

At international level, Bedoya got his big break at this summer’s Gold Cup when he was drafted in late to the USA team. The New Jersey born player has scored nine goals in 62 appearances for Orebro since signing in 2009.

The midfielder was a member of the United States’ squad for the Gold Cup in June, making five appearances as Bob Bradley’s side reached the final before losing 4-2 to Mexico.

The creative midfielder was also in the preliminary 30-man US squad for the 2010 World Cup but was cut from the final 23-man selection.

Bedoya, who has been in Sweden since 2009, has 13 caps for the United States’ national team and is out of contract at the end of the Swedish season in December.

Patrick Mork, the player’s agent, said he believed Bedoya would fit in well in Scotland. “Alejandro Bedoya plays with lots of guts and character,” he  told STV. “When you see him play you think British football.

“He is a very hard working player, an up and down the midfield player. He can play central or right midfield and also on the right wing.”

La narrazione delle principali trasferte può facilmente diventare il paradigma per descrivere centinaia di giornate nelle quali le firms hanno esportato all’estero il loro bagaglio di fedeltà, nazionalismo, alcoolismo e, spesso, anche violenza.
