Tottenham’s opening match postponed

LONDON — Tottenham’s opening match of the Premier League season against Everton on Saturday has been postponed following protests in the London neighborhood and a wave of rioting and looting across England.

The decision to call off the Tottenham game was taken Thursday by the league after being discussed at a meeting of the government’s emergency committee, known as COBRA.Although there are still safety concerns in the area around Tottenham’s White Hart Lane stadium, the remaining nine top-flight matches this weekend are set to go ahead, including two others in London.”Everything is subject to change if there is a major incident in any of the cities tonight or on Friday night,” Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore said Thursday on the launch of the season. The violence first broke out late Saturday in the low-income district of Tottenham in north London after a protest against the fatal police shooting of Mark Duggan, a 29-year-old father of four who was gunned down in disputed circumstances Thursday. The violence morphed into general lawlessness in London and several other cities the following three nights, with police struggling to regain control.”The police have done a fantastic job, but it’s been a crime scene all week and the council have not had enough time to do what they need,” Scudamore said.Tottenham said the decision to postpone the match was taken because of “safety concerns relating to the infrastructure of the High Road and access to the stadium caused by last Saturday’s riots.””We apologize for any inconvenience caused to supporters due to matters outside of the control of the club,” Spurs said.Tottenham captain Michael Dawson expressed his disappointment at his delayed start to the season, having already seen England’s friendly against the Netherlands on Wednesday at Wembley Stadium called off.”We’ve worked for six weeks trying to get fit and now the first week’s not going to be happening for us,” the defender said. “But safety is the main thing, and the police wouldn’t have called it off lightly.”The other Premier League matches on the opening weekend in London are Saturday, with Fulham hosting Aston Villa and Queens Park Rangers facing Bolton. The league confirmed those and the other seven matches in the rest of the country would go ahead”The Premier League has worked closely with the authorities and London-based clubs throughout the recent civil unrest to ensure matches are staged in accordance with supporter safety,” the league said in a statement.”Acting on current information from the authorities there is no reason to believe that matches outside of London will be affected at this time,” the statement added. The Football League, which runs the three divisions below the top flight, also confirmed its matches in London will be played this weekend.UEFA also said Thursday that it is working on security plans for Arsenal’s Champions League match Tuesday against Udinese at Emirates Stadium, which is four miles from Tottenham.”We’re monitoring the situation very closely,” UEFA spokesman Rob Faulkner said. “(UEFA is) liaising with Arsenal, The Football Association and London police authorities with regards to the match being played as scheduled.”A UEFA security official is expected in London Sunday.

Barcelona finally set to unveil Arsenal skipper Cesc Fabregas

Cesc Fabregas

Fabregas has made 303 appearances for the Gunners scoring 57 goals

Barcelona are hoping to unveil Cesc Fabregas at a homecoming ceremony by Monday, BBC Sport has learned.Barca sources say they are “99.9% certain” that a £35m transfer will go through.Arsenal sources insist any final deal is still “days rather than hours away” but privately admit Fabregas’s exit is imminent.Fabregas trained with his Arsenal team-mates for what appears to be the final time on Friday morning. It is believed Arsenal will receive a guaranteed £30m with a further £5m dependent on the number of games played and trophies won by the 24-year-old during his time at the Nou Camp.

CESC FABREGAS FACTFILE

  • 1987: Born in the Catalonia town of Vilassar de Mar
  • 2003: Leaves boyhood heroes Barcelona for Arsenal aged 16
  • 2008: Installed as Arsenal club captain
  • 2011: Set to rejoin Barcelona

Reports in Spain suggested Fabregas would travel to Barcelona this weekend and possibly attend the club’s Super Cup match against Real Madrid on Sunday.Arsenal’s opening Premier League game at Newcastle on Saturday has delayed the completion of the deal. But players at the Catalan giants have already hailed Fabregas’s expected signing through social networking site Twitter.Club captain Carlos Puyol tweeted: “Welcome home! Happy to have you here!” And fellow defender Gerard Pique added: “He’s finally here!”Earlier Arsene Wenger admitted neither Fabregas or Samir Nasri would play against Newcastle with both close to moves away from the club.Nasri appears set for Manchester City for about £23m and has also been left out of the Gunners’ squad travelling to St James’ Park.

Despite their absences, Wenger refused to be drawn on the speculation over the midfielders’ futures on Friday morning. He bizarrely claimed: “I expect nobody to leave. There is no news. If there is news, I promise I will give it.”When asked if he therefore expected the pair to stay, Wenger replied that that was “a good conclusion from my statement”.However, earlier on the club’s official website, Wenger admitted that Fabregas’ future could be decided before the start of the Premier League season.”That is completely the truth. We hope it will be sorted out very quickly one way or the other. We’ll know very quickly,” he said. Before the deal was confirmed Wenger said any losses from his squad would not be terminal. The Frenchman added: “We are all replaceable. All the cemeteries are full of replaceable people.”But you do not want to lose big players. We fight to have big players so you do not want to lose them.”

ARSENAL’S START TO THE SEASON

  • Saturday: Newcastle (a)
  • 16 August: Udinese (h)
  • 20 August: Liverpool (h)
  • 24 August: Udinese (a)
  • 28 August: Man Utd (a)

Fabregas has not appeared for the Gunners in pre-season after suffering a hamstring injury, although Wenger has admitted his skipper has been unsettled by the interest from Barcelona.Wenger dismissed the suggestion, however, that Fabregas had refused to play for him.And despite Nasri starting and playing for 65 minutes in France’s game against Chile on Wednesday, Wenger insisted the 24-year-old was suffering from an illness.”Cesc is not on strike. Cesc is not injured, he’s not match fit. I don’t want to go any deeper than that,” he added.”Nasri went for the national team, he was sick, and he has not completely recovered yet. There are no other aspects why he is not in the squad.”

Danny Wilson and Carlos Cuellar in Rangers’ sights

IN ASSOCIATION WITH

Danny Wilson
Wilson was in the Scotland side that defeated Denmark 2-1 on Wednesday

Rangers are open to a loan return for Liverpool’s Danny Wilson and have not given up on another former Ibrox defender, Carlos Cuellar.Wilson was quoted this week as saying he would consider a loan to win first-team football, while Rangers have approached Aston Villa about Cuellar.Rangers manager Ally McCoist says there are “one or two issues” surrounding the deal for Spaniard Cuellar. And he would not rule out a move for Scotland international Wilson.”Danny is a player we know very well, he is a great talent and will only get better,” said McCoist. The 19-year-old switched to Liverpool from Rangers in a £2m transfer in July 2010 but has featured only eight times for the English Premier League club.Cuellar moved to Villa from Ibrox for £7.8m in 2008 and former Rangers manager Alex McLeish appears open to allowing the 29-year-old to leave since taking over at the English Premier League club in the summer.

The central defender is currently recovering from a knee injury and is not included in the Villa squad for Saturday’s trip to Fulham.”You know what I think of Carlos, I would be desperately keen to get Carlos but there are one or two other issues,” explained McCoist.”His injury is coming along fine, there is no problem with that. It’s just the fact that he’s not ready to play right now that would be a definite problem for us.”He has been here before and he was terrific for us. I don’t see any major obstacles in the way at all.”The only thing we have a problem with is that we need someone to play sooner rather than later.”McCoist appears resigned to losing out in his pursuit of another option in central defence, Anderlecht’s Roland Juhasz.Rangers bid £3m for the Hungary international, but the Belgian club are demanding £500,000 more for the 28-year-old.”If they’re saying the deal is dead then I would probably say the deal is dead,” McCoist said of the prolonged negotiations with Anderlecht.Meanwhile, after sheriff officers visited Ibrox this week over a tax issue, McCoist says he has not been told that the HMRC issue will affect his transfer budget, so the he is assuming it will not.
