Hajduk Split   0 – 1   Stoke (agg 0 – 2)

Jonathan Walters

Walters scored the only goal in the first leg at the Britannia Stadium

Stoke advanced to the Europa League qualifying play-offs after a late own goal ended Hajduk Spilt’s challenge. The Potters threatened to add to their first-leg lead as Jonathan Walters broke free, but he had his weak shot blocked by defender Ljubo Milicevic. The hosts applied more pressure in the second half with Anas Sharbini and Dinko Trebotic both looking dangerous. But Stoke could relax once Milicevic turned Dean Whitehead’s cross into his own net with Ryan Shotton lurking.A two-legged play-off, with matches to be played on 18 and 25 August, now lies between Tony Pulis’s side and the group stages proper.

STOKE’S NINE-MONTH MARATHON

  • If Stoke are to replicate Fulham’s 2010 Europa League final appearance they have to be braced for a campaign lasting more than nine months
  • Stoke 1-0 Hajduk Split – 28 July 2011
  • Europa League final – 9 May 2012

The Stadion Poljud crowd provided a raucous backdrop to Hadjuk’s efforts to drag themselves back into the tie, but ultimately they left disappointed.Stoke summer recruit Jonathan Woodgate was pressed into early action on his debut, ushering the ball behind as Mario Tomasov broke into the box.A clever run from Walters briefly bought him space in the Hajduk box, but his ambitious attempt to lift the ball into the far corner was snuffed out by the covering Milicevic. The home side struggled to open up Stoke’s well-drilled backline though, and it was not until the second half that they caused the visitors some nervous moments.Ryan Shawcross stretched to divert Shabini’s effort behind, before goalkeeper Asmir Begovic smothered Tomasov’s effort. As they continued to toil in vain, Hadjuk’s ambitions were reduced to trying to force extra time, before that too disappeared in the first minute of injury time.As in the first leg, Pulis brought on centre-half Shotton as a makeshift forward late on and the 22-year-old’s presence in the six-yard box unsettled Milicevic into slicing past Danijel Subasic

Fulham   2 – 0   RNK Split (agg 2 – 0)

Andrew Johnson (central) celebrates scoring for Fulham

Johnson’s goal was his third in Fulham’s Europa League qualifying campaign

Fulham are through to the Europa League play-off round with a 2-0 win over Croatians RNK Split at Craven Cottage. The Cottagers had struggled in last week’s away leg but largely dominated on home turf and took the lead through Andrew Johnson’s header from a corner.Fulham sealed their progress when Brede Hangeland was fouled by Velimir Vidic in the box and Danny Murphy slotted home the resulting penalty.Johnson thought he had added a third soon after but he was ruled offside. The victory maintains Fulham’s unbeaten record during this qualifying campaign, during which they have yet to concede a goal at home in three matches. The Cottagers defence had to be on top form to preserve this cleansheet record as Goran Milovic, Ante Vitaic and Roman Oblinovic all came close to scoring in the second half. However, it was ultimately a deserved win for Martin Jol’s side, who now face a two-legged play-off on 18 and 25 August to book their place in the Europa League proper, a competition they in which they were runners-up in 2010.

ANOTHER FULHAM EUROPEAN ADVENTURE?

  • If Fulham are to replicate their 2010 run to the Europa League final this season they will have to play another 16 matches on top of the six they have already played.
  • With their first match having been on 30 June this year and the final on 9 May 2012, the campaign would last just over 10 months.

The home side’s determination to make up for a disappointing stalemate in Croatia last Thursday was evident from the off as Damien Duff threatened from Danny Murphy’s free-kick.It did not take long for the early pressure to pay off though when Johnson lost his marker to head home Duff’s corner in the 19th minute. The home side continued to press, but Johnson was unable to add to his opener when his shot was blocked before Murphy was denied by the visitor’s goalkeeper Andrija Vukovic. After the break, Split looked rejuvenated and and came close to equalising through Vitaic’s stunning 30-yard free-kick, which dipped over the wall but fell just wide of goal. However, a rash challenge from Vidic on Hangeland gave Murphy the chance to ease Fulham’s nerves and the former England midfielder made no mistake from the spot.Johnson thought he had further extended his side’s advantage minutes later when he rounded Vukovic to net, but the goal was ruled out for offside. At the other end, Milovic was unfortunate to see a close-range shot ricochet off the bar, while Fulham keeper Mark Schwarzer was forced to save low from an Oblinovic 25-yard drive, but there were no further scares for the home side.

Hearts   4 – 1   Paks (agg 5 – 2)

Ryan Stevenson

Ryan Stevenson opened the scoring for Hearts in the 34th minute

Paulo Sergio made a winning start as Hearts manager as they strode to an easy win against Paksi to grab their place in the Europa League play-offs.A Ryan Stevenson brace put the home side 2-0 up at half time against their Hungarian opponents.Further goals from John Sutton and Rudi Skacel put the tie out of reach before Daniel Bode grabbed a consolation for the visitors late on.The Gorgie side now join Rangers and Celtic in Friday’s fourth round draw.Paksi, who finished second in the Hungarian league, arrived at Tynecastle knowing they required a goal to progress, but seemed content to sit in during the early stages while Hearts applied all the pressure. And the home side had the best of the early stages, with a series of set-piece chances in front of goal.Ryan Stevenson had the best of those, when he connected with Ian Black’s cross deep inside the penalty area but sent it right of the keeper. That early fluency was punctured when Stephen Elliot had to leave the fray, unable to recover from a cynical foul by the Paksi captain Laszlo Eger eight minutes in.Eger was booked while Elliot was replaced by John Sutton three minutes later.Hearts, without a win in 15 matches under previous manager Jim Jefferies, continued to apply pressure and a breakthrough came 11 minutes from half time.Stevenson rose highest to meet Grainger’s inswinging corner just six yards out, his flying header sailing past the Hungarian goalkeeper Norbert Csernyanszki who could do no more than flail a weak left hand as the ball bounced into the net. With the Scots in the driving seat, Paksi began to play with more urgency, Istvan Sipeki dragging an effort wide after just before half time. But that chance left the Hungarians exposed, Hearts breaking quickly down the pitch and Sutton shaping to shoot before playing in Stevenson to net from an almost impossible angle on the left, the Csernyanszki again looking to be at fault. The match ended at half-time for captain Marius Zaliukas who was replaced due to injury by Jamie Hamill at the break. And despite the deficit, Paksi looked the livelier at the restart, Bode beating three or four players before putting left foot shot just wide of Marian Kello’s goal. That resurgence wasn’t to last long though. Sutton again the creator, laying the ball up for a fit-again Andrew Driver to fire home from inside the penalty box, Csernyanszki this time getting the slightest touch of the ball before it went in off the underside of the bar.Fittingly it was Skacel who completed the scoring for Hearts, after agreeing a new deal with the club earlier on Thursday. On the subs bench in the first half, and relaxed enough to oversee the half-time draw, the Czech picked up on the rebound from Templeton’s 25 yard strike in the 76th minute to make it 4-0.There was limited consolation for an out-classed Hungarian outfit late on when Daniel Bode headed home from close range, but Hearts progress to the play off stages in convincing style.

Rangers chasing ‘at least half a dozen’ players

Ibrox chairman Craig Whyte reassures supporters work is ongoing to bring in new faces, despite their European woes.

Craig Whyte says Rangers have “at least half a dozen offers out there” for new players, as Ally McCoist looks to significantly strengthen his first team squad, and says two new faces could arrive this week.

McCoist’s side exited 2-1 on aggregate at the hands of Swedish side Malmo in the competition’s third qualifying round, seeing Steven Whittaker and Madjid Bougherra sent off in their second leg match.Whyte insists Rangers’ failure to progress in the Champions League is not down to a lack of new signings at the club but, having added Juan Manuel Ortiz, Lee Wallace and Dorin Goian so far, says there is the potential for yet more to arrive at the club.”We have at least half a dozen offers out there and hopefully we will get a couple this week,” he told Press Association Sport. “We will be bringing more players in, of that we are very confident.”Last season we didn’t get players in until the end of August. We have been working very hard in terms of transfers and we have recruited three new players and secured others on long-term contracts.”There has to be commercial business sense. We have got to run the club sensibly, we can’t go down the same road again and I think the fans know that.”Some people misuse the word investment. Look at Lee Wallace, he is a very good investment, his value will increase. That is the type of deal that we want to do.”Whyte however believes the current crop would have prevailed if the whole team had stayed on the park and, despite their loss, would see further faces added in the coming weeks.“Like every Rangers fan I was bitterly disappointed by the result in Malmo last night and I share the supporters’ frustration that we will not be competing in the Champions League this season,” Whyte said in a statement on Rangers’ official website.“However, we will look forward and not back and we must pick ourselves up and get on with the job of ensuring that Rangers fans enjoy a successful season.“I fully understand the fans’ frustration at the transfer speculation we have seen in recent weeks but the reason we lost in the Champions League is not due to a lack of signings. Had 11 players remained on the pitch last night I have no doubt we would have won the match.“Yes, we want to see new faces but we all believed we should have been strong enough over two legs against Malmo.”Rangers have been left frustrated in their attempts to sign a number of players and Whyte, who is overseeing his first early season in charge at the club, has urged agitated supporters to judge the success of the transfer window after deadline day on August 31.“Our efforts to sign players have not been helped by the fact we were trying to do business early in the transfer window,” lamented the chairman. Selling clubs, particularly in England, were in no rush to do make final decisions on their players.“If anyone looks at when this club’s transfer business has really been done in the last few years, it is towards the end of the window, either in mid to late August or late January.“That said, we have move on and we will go forward working together as a club determined to build on our success of recent seasons.”

TSLR sellers of the world unite

New season, new look TSLR. As Brighton & Hove Albion FC moves into their new ultra-modern all-seater stadium on the edge of the South Downs, one old tradition will move in with it – the unofficial club fanzine. The Seagull Love Review has been re-vamped – new printers you see – and is bumper full of old columnists and a few new faces. Yours truly is back with a column and a bit of cartooning, and all this still for only ONE POUND. I’ve had a sneak preview of the latest issue online and it’s a belter.TSLR sellers will be outside the ground on Saturday and about on the stadium concourses, so the editors are expecting to shift a lot more copies at Falmer than were shifted at the Theatre of Trees with its crowds of under 7000. Please support your one and only fans’ magazine, it’s an important part of fandom and football culture and will only get better the more it gets out there. If you can’t get to matches the fanzine can be bought online on the TSLR blog.
