Barton was told by Newcastle that he can leave on a free transfer immediately

Newcastle United midfielder Joey Barton says he has been fined two weeks’ wages a day after the club made him available on a free transfer.”The inevitable – two weeks’ wages fine has just arrived,” Barton tweeted on Tuesday, adding that he would appeal.Earlier on Tuesday, Barton had revealed he was being made to train alone. The 28-year-old’s agent, Willie McKay, has said he has been “inundated” with interest from Premier League and top European clubs keen to sign Barton.Barton has not said what the fine relates to, and the club has yet to issue a statement or confirm that the player has been fined.Despite having one year left on his contract, Barton has been told he can leave St James’ Park for free.”We have been inundated with interest,” McKay told BBC Radio 5 live.

More yob fans would be banned from Scotland’s football grounds under a shake-up proposed by experts.A government-backed study is calling for special cops and prosecutors to be appointed to boost the number of football banning orders handed Number issued out each year. And the report wants laws to ban hooligans extended to cover even junior matches. It also urges sheriffs to mark cases as “football-related” to make it easier to ban repeat offenders from games. The moves are part of a package of reforms being recommended by experts from the Scottish government’s social research unit.Their report – sent to ministers last week – found banning orders have been used far less frequently in Scotland than in England since they were introduced in 2006.Only 101 have been issued by the courts, compared with more than 2500 down south.101 of the total in Scotland, 93 per cent were handed to fans of SPL sides. issued in since But in England 64 per cent of the orders have gone to fans of clubs outwith the Premiership.Calling for a shake-up of the current system, the report said banning orders could be “highly effective”.Thugs who are hit with an order are banned from all league games and usually have to surrender their passport when matches are being played abroad to stop them travelling. The bans usually last for 10 years and sheriffs can impose additional conditions, such as banning a thug from pubs near their club’s ground. The report said extra funding from the Home Office in England – not matched by Scottish ministers – had ensured that the orders were adopted more quickly in England.FBOs England 2006 But even today only half of the orders applied for by Scottish police are granted by the courts, compared with 80 per cent in England. The report follows a major crackdown on football-related sectarianism by First Minister Alex Salmond. Laws going through Holyrood would make sectarian behaviour at football matches a crime punishable by up to five years in jail. The report on banning orders said further laws should be considered to extend banning orders to junior football matches, not covered at present. In February, a junior match between Ayrshire rivals Auchinleck Talbot and Cumnock was abandoned after some of the 2000-strong crowd invaded the pitch and fought running battles.Last night, a Scottish government spokesman said: “Football abuse, bigotry and hooliganism are disgraceful stains on our national sport and our country’s reputation.”No one should be subjected to intolerance, prejudice or violence in 21st century Scotland. To tackle such behaviour, the courts have the ability to apply football banning orders and figures show that the use of such orders in Scotland has increased.”

Malmo   1 – 1   Rangers (agg 2 – 1)

Madjid Bougherra Bougherra was ordered off in the 66th minute, reducing Rangers to nine men

Nine-man Rangers were dumped out of the Champions League by Malmo in a bad-tempered encounter in Sweden.Nikica Jelavic’s goal had levelled the tie in the 23rd minute, but red cards for Steven Whittaker and Madjid Bougherra hit Ally McCoist’s side. The Swedes were reduced to 10 men when Ferreira Ricardinho saw red, but an 80th minute goal from Jiloan Hamad put the tie out of reach.Rangers now drop into the final round of Europa League qualifying.Uefa sanctions meant McCoist’s side were without their own supporters for the away tie in Sweden, but the Ibrox side started brightly, with Jelavic threatening in front of goal as early as the eighth minute, his run brought to an abrupt halt by Malmo keeper Dusan Melicharek. At the other end Malmo too had early chances with Pontus Jansson blasting over the crossbar, before a dipping free-kick from Wilton Figueiredo from 22 yards out caused more of a scare, with Allan McGregor having to tip over the bar.Rangers’ task was made more difficult when Whittaker was shown a straight red card after 18 minutes when he threw the ball at Malmo midfielder Jimmy Durmaz’s head during a stoppage in play. But having lost a man, Rangers gained a goal just five minutes later, Jelavic this time connecting beautifully with Maurice Edu’s cross, volleying with his right foot back across goal to level the aggregate score at 1-1.With the tie wide open, the drama continued on and off the ball.Lee McCulloch could have little complaint about his yellow card for a challenge on Durmaz, but the Swede escaped any kind of caution when he appeared to kick out at the Rangers midfieler while on the ground in the aftermath of that foul. The Russian referee Vladislav Bezborodov waved away the protestations of the Rangers players on the pitch, while McCoist voiced his disapproval from the sidelines. The controversy was to continue into the second half. The Swedish champions, seemingly buoyed by their numerical advantage, started brightly and slowly built the pressure towards the hour-mark, winning a series of corners but being unable to penetrate McGregor’s goal. With the tension building, Bougherra was the next to see red in the 66th minute, the Algerian appearing to elbow Malmo’s Dardan Rexhepi on the back of the head when the two players went up for a high ball.Reduced in number yet again, Rangers tried to hold on for extra time, but to no avail. With 10 minutes remaining, Hamad secured a place in the final qualifying round for the Swedes, striking a controlled left-footed volley from distance which caught McGregor – who had an otherwise faultless performance – off-guard.There were chances for Rangers in the dying minutes, including an opportunity for Steven Naismith in the final seconds which he sent over the bar, but the Swedes held on to their advantage, leaving the Scots to await their fate in the draw for Europa League fourth round play-offs.
