RNK Split   0 – 0   Fulham

Andrew Johnson

Striker Andrew Johnson had two of Fulham’s best chances in Split

Fulham eked out a goalless draw in their third qualifying round first-leg match at RNK Split in Croatia.Fulham were unable to force a clear opening in the first half, while RNK’s Ante Erceg came closest to scoring, shooting wide when through on goal. The Premier League side had chances early in the second half but thereafter the hosts looked more likely to secure a winner. The second leg takes place at Craven Cottage next Thursday.Fulham manager Martin Jol named a strong starting line-up, with veteran midfielder Danny Murphy skippering the side at Dugopolje’s Stadion Hrvatski Vitezovi and Andrew Johnson and Bobby Zamora given a chance to hone their strike partnership.New signings Pajtim Kasami, Csaba Somogyi and Marcel Gecov were named among the Cottagers’ substitutes. But a blocked Damien Duff shot was the visitors’ only moment of note in the opening 25 minutes and Fulham were continually exposed down the flanks. They began the second period more positively and came close to scoring five minutes after the restart when Johnson broke down the right and cut the ball back for Matthew Briggs, but his shot into an empty goal was thwarted by a lunging challenge in the six-yard box.John Arne Riise came close to finding the bottom corner with a low drive three minutes later as the visitors began to take more control of the game, before Zamora blazed a long-range effort wide.RNK, though, were still proving dangerous and an ambitious 30-yard effort from Ante Vitaic looked dangerous before a deflection.Split began to press as the game entered the latter stages and Mark Schwarzer was forced to save when substitute Duje Cop managed to turn his marker and force a shot in the 18-yard box.Jol brought on Steve Sidwell for Dickson Etuhu in a bid to change the game but the only impact the former Aston Villa midfielder had was receiving a yellow card a minute after coming on.The Fulham boss made another switch with 10 minutes remaining, handing recent signing Kasami his debut in place of the ineffective Zamora. However, the former Palermo midfielder’s introduction failed to gee up his new team-mates and Cop twice came close to scoring in the final 10 minutes.First he darted a header across the face of the goal, then he turned Chris Baird but could only manage a feeble shot that Schwarzer easily stopped.

Stoke   1 – 0   Hajduk Split

Jonathan Walters

Walters signed from Ipswich last summer

Jonathan Walters scored the only goal in the first leg of Stoke’s Europa League third-round qualifying tie against Hajduk Spilt. The Republic of Ireland international nodded in from Matthew Etherington’s cross after three minutes as the Potters made an impressive start.Kenwyne Jones had a goal disallowed before Dean Whitehead and Robert Huth came close, but a dominant Stoke could not extend their lead. The second leg takes place on 4 August.Hajduk’s visit was only Stoke’s third home European game and the result far from guarantees Tony Pulis’s side’s progress to the play-off round. After Walters’ opener, Jones appeared to have added to the advantage a couple of minutes later, only to have the referee rule he had infringed in outmuscling the Hadjuk defence at the back post.Centre-back Huth’s decision to lurk in the penalty area after coming forward for a set-piece almost paid off, but his well-struck shot was deflected over the bar.The German then headed wide from Etherington’s corner after the break and Hadjuk goalkeeper Danijel Subasic had to be alert to palm away a cross from the on-rushing Walters as the hosts continued to press.Former Tottenham defender Jonathan Woodgate remained on the bench as Pulis instead brought on centre-half Ryan Shotton as the hosts’ frustrations increased in the closing stages. And Stoke were forced to settle for a slender lead once Whitehead’s drilled effort was well blocked in their last clear opening of the match.

Jamie Hamill nets from the penalty spot at the Sostoi Stadium

Hamill grabbed an important away goal for Hearts from the penalty spot in Hungary

Jamie Hamill converted a penalty on his competitive debut as Hearts earned a first-leg draw in their Europa League qualifier in Hungary.Against the run of play, Istvan Sipeki gave Paksi the lead with a cool lobbed finish on 32 minutes. But Hamill levelled in first-half injury time after striker John Sutton was impeded from a free kick. The Hearts defence was seldom troubled as the visitors enjoyed long spells of comfortable possession.Hamill and Sutton both had chances to grab a win for Jim Jefferies’ side but Norbert Csernyanszki saved from the former Kilmarnock midfielder and the lone striker sent the awkward rebound over the crossbar.Hearts started well at Videoton’s Sostoi Stadium, with David Obua, Hamill and David Templeton trying their luck with shots from distance.Obua started even though the Ugandan had a stressful trip after making a late dash to London to renew his passport before encountering visa complications at immigration in Budapest airport. With fewer than 3,000 fans watching, the match was played at a leisurely pace throughout, Hearts knocking the ball around with assurance. The Paksi goal came completely out of the blue when Laszlo Bartha’s initial effort from outside the penalty box was blocked by Eggert Jonsson and Sipeki cleverly struck the bouncing ball over the stranded Marian Kello.Buoyed by the goal, the Hungarians began to commit more players in attack but the teams were level on the stroke of half time.Sutton was hauled to the ground by Tibor Heffler as he tried to reach Danny Grainger’s free-kick and Hamill coolly lifted his spot-kick high into the net. With both sides playing one up front, the cautious nature of play continued in the second half.Following the opportunities for Hamill and Sutton, Paksi briefly threatened when a header from Tamas Sifter was pushed on to a post by Kello and a free kick from Gabor Vayer whistled wide. But Paksi failed to gain any momentum and, with an away goal, Hearts will go into next week’s second leg full of confidence. However, Jefferies will be fully aware of the fact that the Hungarians progressed to this stage with a 3-0 win at Tromso after a 1-1 draw at home.
