Stoke City have agreed a fee with West Ham United for striker Carlton Cole.The 27-year-old is currently in Switzerland with the Hammers squad for a pre-season training.The Potters are now in talks with Cole and his agent over a proposed switch to the Britannia Stadium.Stoke chairman Peter Coates told BBC Radio Stoke: “We’ve agreed terms with them [West Ham], it’s now just seeing where we get with the player and agent, and that’s still a live issue.””We’re in the messy business of trying to reach agreement, I’m not in any doubt that he’d want to come to Stoke, I don’t think that’s a problem at all.”Cole joined West Ham from Chelsea in July 2006 and has scored 42 goals in 165 appearances.The England striker scored just five times in the Premier League last season and the Hammers are keen to lower their wage bill following relegation to the Championship.Stoke are believed to be prepared to pay an initial £4million with a possible £2m in add-ons to secure Cole’s signature.

Woodgate made only 65 appearances for Spurs in three and a half years

Jonathan Woodgate has signed for Stoke City on a free transfer.The former England centre-back, 31, was released by Tottenham at the end of last season and has agreed what is “effectively a pay-as-you-play deal”, according to Stoke manager Tony Pulis.Pulis said: “We believe that if his fitness is managed properly, he will play games for us.”

Bothroyd was selected for England’s defeat by France in November

Premier League newcomers Queens Park Rangers have signed England striker Jay Bothroyd on a free transfer.The 28-year-old, who was released by Cardiff during the summer, has signed a three-year deal at Loftus Road.”I think this club is heading in the right direction and has got a lot of ambition,” said Bothroyd.Manager Neil Warnock commented: “We have had to have a lot of patience with this but, as the saying goes, good things come to those who wait.”Bothroyd began his career with QPR – he was in the centre of excellence from the age of nine – before moving on to join Arsenal’s youth system.

Motherwell fans urged to support ‘modern legend’ Stephen Craigan at testimonial

MOTHERWELL boss Stuart McCall has urged supporters to turn out for skipper Stephen Craigan’s Testimonial game against Partick Thistle at Fir Park tomorrow night.The 34-year-old defender, who has won 54 caps for Northern Ireland, first signed for the Steelmen in 1994 and returned to the Lanarkshire club for a second time following a three-year spell at the Jags from 2000 to 2003.In an email to the fans, Well manager McCall said: “I am just writing you a short message to plead for your support tomorrow night against Partick Thistle.”Normally, pre-season friendly matches aren’t the most attractive of prospects to your average fan.”However, tomorrow night, we pay tribute to a modern Motherwell legend in Stephen Craigan.“When you are a manager of any club, guys like Stephen are absolutely vital both on and off the pitch. You need natural leaders and in Craigan you have that.”He’s been a servant to Motherwell Football Club over 14 years and regardless of your opinions on him, one thing that absolutely no-one can question is his commitment, his desire and his effort every time he pulls on a jersey.”I believe he is, by some distance, Motherwell’s most capped player – an honour that deserves a fitting tribute in itself.”He deserves a good turnout tomorrow and I hope you can encourage as many people as possible to come along and give him a proper night.”
