Czech Republic goal
Chramosta’s 89th minute equaliser denied England the win they needed

Czech Republic scored two late goals to dump England out of the European Under-21 Championship.England needed to win to progress to the last four and looked on track to achieve that after Danny Welbeck’s 76th-minute header gave England the lead. But substitutes Jan Chramosta and Tomas Pekhart tapped home in the 89th minute and stoppage time respectively.Czech Republic will now face Switzerland in Wednesday’s semi-final.Stuart Pearce reacted to his side’s stalemate with Ukraine by dropping Jack Rodwell, Danny Rose and captain Michael Mancienne. With Manchester United’s new centre-back Phil Jones handed the armband, Tom Cleverley reinstated to the starting line-up and Fabrice Muamba and Scott Sinclair brought in, there was a new look to the England team.

GROUP B TABLE

  • Spa: P3 Pts 7 GD 5
  • Cze: P3 Pts 6 GD 0
  • Eng: P3 Pts 2 GD -1
  • Ukr: P3 Pts 1 GD -4

The lively Daniel Sturridge created the first opening in the 10th minute, picking out Welbeck, who peeled off his marker on the edge of the box but could only fire straight at Czech goalkeeper Tomas Vaclik.Vaclik’s opposite number, Frankie Fielding, was then forced into a reflex save from Lukas Marecek, whose well improvised volley from the edge of the box provided a moment of concern for Pearce’s side. That opening ushered in a good spell for the Czechs, as England’s early dynamism subsided. But England again came close in the 27th minute, with a patient and confident build-up resulting in Ryan Bertrand’s chipped cross from the left that reached Cleverley at the far post, only for him to hack his effort into the side netting.Sinclair, whose introduction on the left seemed to bring the best out of Bertrand, came close four minutes before half-time when his surging run infield from the left had the Czechs stretched, before his thunderous shot was tipped over the bar by Vaclik.England were guilty of surrendering possession cheaply throughout, with Jordan Henderson central to a midfield that lacked guile or imagination against mediocre opposition. It was no surprise when Liverpool’s latest signing was replaced by Henri Lansbury halfway through the second half – and the substitute made an immediate impact with a clever reverse pass to Sinclair, whose low cross from the left had the Czechs stretched before they eventually cleared.England eventually breached the Czechs’ last line of defence with 14 minutes left and it was no surprise to see Sturridge involved once again. His teasing cross from the right was met by the head of Welbeck, and the relief was tangible as England appeared to be heading for the last four. But Pearce’s team conceded a cruel late equaliser, when Chramosta came off the bench to poke home a scrappy finish after England had failed to clear. To add insult to injury, Chramosta took advantage of the space at the back as England pushed for an even later winner, teeing up former Spurs striker Pekhart to stroke home a second for Czech Republic. In the absence of Jack Wilshere and Andy Carroll, England lacked creativity and a genuine goal threat throughout – a problem which has ultimately resulted in their failure to reach the semi-finals.

England Under-21 coach Stuart Pearce:

“We are disappointed as a group as we felt after taking the lead we should have held on to it.”They didn’t really cause us a problem all evening defensively but we switched off for a minute, it falls to their player, and it’s 1-1. The second goal was neither here nor there.”It was probably the best performance of the tournament. But perhaps us going home now was symptomatic of us not passing the ball well enough in the first two games.”This is a culmination of a two-year period, not just a one-off. The players put their hearts and souls into it. And for one or two it’s the end of the line at Under-21 level.”

SPL chief defends scheduling for the season ahead

Christmas Eve, the split and long distances for midweek games explained by Iain Blair.

Scottish Premier League secretary Iain Blair has defended the controversial scheduling for the forthcoming season.

Fans have criticised the full card of games marked in for Christmas Eve, including; Dundee United at home to Hibs and Inverness Caley Thistle playing host to Aberdeen, which will take place at 3pm on December 24.Christmas Eve falls on a Saturday and it was felt it was preferable to use this date rather than say a midweek in November or January,” he said.”Boxing Day was ruled out as there is a full midweek card on December 28 and that would mean clubs playing two matches in three days.”We appreciate this might not find favour with everyone but hopefully fans can kick off the Christmas celebrations by watching their team notch up a victory.”The controversial table split is another area that was defended by the league boss.Last season seventh placed Inverness ended the season with a greater points total than fifth place Kilmarnock and a whole seven points better off than Motherwell, who ended up in sixth spot. But Blair said: “It’s fair to say the split divides opinion but it does generate excitement. “However, if Rangers, Celtic, Hearts, Dundee United, Kilmarnock and Motherwell again occupy the top six, as they did in 2010/11, then we can guarantee that all clubs will play 19 home and 19 away games and there will be no need to reverse any fixtures.”Unfortunately (at least from a fixturing perspective), since the 12-team league was introduced in 2000/01, only once has the top six been the same two years running!”Another bug bearer of fans and clubs is the long distances they are made to travel on Tuesday and Wednesday nights. But this is an area which will be less of an issue, claims Blair. He said: “Midweek games are less of a problem this season because the early start means there is only one midweek card outside of the Christmas period.”In terms of the games around Christmas and New Year, we have done our best to limit tough travel but in a national league, with Aberdeen and Inverness CT geographically isolated, there is only so much we can do.”

Fans prepared to form consortium to run Kilmarnock

Share

17 Jun 2011

Michael Johnston, the Kilmarnock chairman, came under renewed pressure from another section of supporters last night as the Killie Trust claimed they would gather a consortium to own the club if he was serious about being prepared to hand it over.

Johnston has been criticised for the way Kilmarnock is run and some fans have said they won’t buy season tickets until there is a change of ownership. The chairman had claimed the catalyst for their unhappiness was the fact thousands of Rangers fans were allowed into every section of Rugby Park as they won the Clydesdale Bank Premier League on the final day in May.But the Killie Trust yesterday backed the earlier position taken by fellow group the Kilmarnock FC Supporters’ Association, which has issued a vote of no confidence in the board, and called for Johnston to confirm he would relinquish his majority shareholding for a nominal fee if a viable offer was made. If he does so, said the Trust, it would try to form a consortium to take over.Contrary to what the chairman has stated, the decision to make a statement and for some fans not to renew their season tickets is not just a reaction to the last game of the season,” read a Killie Trust statement.“Having one man running an SPL club is not conducive to reversing the fortunes of the club off the field, which inevitably affects matters on it. The selling of assets and our best players can only service the debts for so long and is, as the chairman has stated himself, unsustainable. It is imperative that we change the approach of the business to a more positive and inclusive one so that we can start to grow club revenues again in partnership with businesses and community.”The Killie Trust want to meet Johnston to discuss a different ownership model. “The long term aim is to own a majority shareholding of the club and implement a three-way partnership between the supporters, local business people and local government, to develop one of our town’s biggest assets and establish a structure that will ensure its survival,” the statement continued. “In the meantime, if we can convince the current administration to agree to put the needs of the club first, it is our intention to try and bring together a consortium of interested parties that could help achieve our aims. We feel strongly that the time for change has arrived.”Johnston’s position is that no-one has approached him with a viable offer to buy Kilmarnock since he took over in 2005, and that the club cannot be run as a community asset by a supporters’ trust because of its £9m debt and property portfolio. In the meantime, the club’s most pressing task is to add to their depleted playing staff. Danny Racchi, a 23-year-old midfielder, has become Kenny Shiels’ second signing, joining on a two-year contract, while Patrick Ada, the former Crewe defender, will have a medical with the club on Monday.Another new face is Jimmy Nicholl, who will be Shiels’ assistant. Having enjoyed a stint at Rugby Park a couple of seasons ago, he is familiar with some of the players but has noticed a change.“I saw a different side to the players last year because when we came here it was all just the relegation stuff,” he said of his time under Jimmy Calderwood. “But they proved last year, once the pressure was off, that the games are to be enjoyed. The same players that we worked with showed last year that they are capable of producing good football. They will be really looking forward to this season.”
