Hearts must quit Tynecastle for club to grow, says director Vitalijus Vasillauskas

HEARTS director Vitalijus Vasillauskas has told Jambos fans quitting Tynecastle for a new stadium will give them the best chance to succeed in the SPL and Europe. The club yesterday launched a questionnaire on their website to gauge the appetite among supporters for a possible move away from their Gorgie home to a purpose-built stadium.Hearts have also joined with City of Edinburgh Council to look at potential redevelopment of their existing ground and development options elsewhere in the capital.In March last year, Vasillauskas announced the plan for a £51million stadium revamp was being scaled down but now the club is looking at leaving Tynecastle.He said: “Finances are probably the main reason why we are trying to get a new approach for this development. We have looked at the cost of how much it will take to build a new stand and it looks like it’s an expensive way to do that.”We are keen to stay at Tynecastle but we’re also thinking about a new era for Hearts.”Hearts are a big club and we have to play in Europe every year. There are no big clubs in Europe playing in small stadiums.”We think we’re big enough to have a bigger stadium and we have to present ourselves as a competitor to the Old Firm. We can’t survive if we do not develop.”We believe we can attract much bigger crowds if we have a bigger capacity. We have to consider what the fans want to do. We are asking their opinion, what is the future for Hearts? We’re looking for the balance that takes in finances and tradition.”We are trying to ask all the fans at Hearts what their view is on the development. Are they keen to stay and be a community club or want Hearts as a much bigger club? “We are considering all options.”We are trying to do our best to reduce the financial pressure on the club and to get it right.”If we move the new ground must be very close to Tynecastle. Probably the biggest challenge for us is to find a place like this.”It can be a decision-making time this summer – are we staying or are we leaving?”

NEW Rangers boss Ally McCoist admitted last night he can’t wait to test his side against Chelsea.

Gers will face the English giants in a glamour friendly at Ibrox on August 6.That will see them opt out of the third weekend of the SPL after league chiefs gave clubs the go-ahead to arrange money-spinning bounce games.McCoist is relishing the chance to see his players take on the likes of Fernando Torres.He said: “It will be a great test for our players and we’re looking forward to their visit.”
