Kyle Lafferty celebrates his opening goal at Rugby Park

Lafferty helped himself to a hat-trick as Rangers ran riot at Rugby Park

By Colin Moffat

Rangers gave departing manager Walter Smith the perfect send-off as they wrapped up a third consecutive Scottish Premier League title in style.

A blistering opening saw Kyle Lafferty net twice inside seven minutes, either side of a Steven Naismith strike.Early in the second half, Nikica Jelavic smashed in a free kick and Lafferty completed his hat-trick with a composed finish.A deflected shot from James Dayton pegged one back for stunned Kilmarnock.Rangers went into the final game of the league campaign just one point ahead of rivals Celtic, ensuring a nervous morning for all Old Firm fans. However, any jitters in the Rangers’ ranks were rapidly dispelled following an astonishing opening sequence.Visiting supporters had taken over Rugby Park and the party was in full swing after three quick strikes. With 47 seconds on the clock, Steven Davis released Lafferty and the Northern Ireland internationallofted a sweet strike over goalkeeper Cammy Bell and into the back of the net from the edge of the penalty area.Rangers were further ahead when Gregg Wylde galloped down the left before finding Naismith, who turned smartly before lashing home from 18 yards.Jelavic then rolled in an inviting pass for Lafferty to coolly side-foot past the exposed Bell. The normally impassive Smith, who leaves Ibrox with 21 trophies to his name, joined in the jubilation, waving his arms aloft like a giddy schoolboy from his position in the stand.Rangers threatened again when Steven Whittaker raced down the right flank to pick out Naismith and he touched on for Jelavic but his flick was deflected narrowly wide.

The pace of the match dropped markedly before Kilmarnock finally managed an attack of note on 33 minutes.Dayton let fly with a powerful shot that Allan McGregor did well to block.Rangers upped the pace in response and were denied by the woodwork when Davis cleverly cut inside a defender and thumped a shot against the post. The first half drew to a close with McGregor making an impressive diving save to keep out a fizzing long-range drive from Killie skipper Craig Bryson.Lafferty, who is becoming something of an end-of-season specialist, drilled a shot wide soon after the restart. But the volume inside the ground reached deafening levels again when Jelavic curled in a ferocious free kick from 20 yards. And Lafferty was soon celebrating his third goal as he stroked home to finish off a surging run from Naismith on 53 minutes.

Kilmarnock gamely plugged away and were rewarded when a Dayton free kick from distance took a deflection to leave McGregor flat-footed as the ball zipped into the net, via the base of a post.McGregor and Bell traded smart saves to thwart Garry Hay and Sasa Papac, respectively, before Naismith crashed an angled strike against the crossbar after running on to a neat headed pass from Jelavic. Lafferty blazed the rebound high into the crowd. With a minute remaining, hat-trick hero Lafferty went off to a rousing ovation. His replacement, David Healy, did not get a touch before the final whistle sounded and the champions began their on-field celebrations.

We deserve to win title – Giggs

Earlier this week, Roberto Mancini’s side’s 1-0 win over Tottenham in the Premier League ensured City will play in the Champions League next season for the first time.”I think it is amazing we have won this final to go with our Champions League place,” said goalscorer Toure, who also scored City’s winning goal in their 1-0 semi-final win over United at Wembley.”It means a lot to the players but even more to the fans,” added City midfielder Patrick Vieira, who came on in the final minutes to replace David Silva. “They have been waiting a long time for this.” If Rooney showed no sign of nerves as he thumped his spot-kick past Rovers keeper Paul Robinson, who had brought down Javier Hernandez to concede the penalty, afterwards he admitted he had been “terrified” before taking his kick.”I just had to compose myself, said Rooney. “After the year I’ve had, you know the ups and downs,” he added, referring to the transfer request he submitted earlier in the season.United manager Sir Alex Ferguson added: “Our away form has not been great, yet our home form has been absolutely fantastic – that’s won us the title.”

FA Cup win a bonus – Roberto Mancini

The Red Devils have dropped only two points at Old Trafford, though Ferguson’s side have picked up 25 points from a possible 57 on their travels.United will be presented with the Premier League trophy on 22 May after their home game at against relegation-threatened Blackpool, who boosted their hopes of survival with a 4-3 win over Bolton on Saturday. As Mancunians celebrated both in the city, Blackburn and London, Manchester City Council confirmed that Blues’ victory parade would take place on 23 May.United’s parade celebrations will be held on 30 May – two days after Sir Alex Ferguson’s side face Barcelona in the Champions League final at Wembley. While Manchester’s two set of fans revelled in their respective successes, Mancini insisted his players would not be drinking to toast their FA Cup win.”No, they know that we should play in three days” said Mancini, referring to City’s Premier League game against Stoke on Tuesday at Eastlands. “We have another two games and we want to try if possible to get third position.”

BIGOTED football hate yobs have gone straight to the top of the Government’s Most Wanted list – and are today warned: “We’re coming after you.”

First Minister Alex Salmond and the SNP are determined to cut out the cancer of violence and sectarianism that heaps shame on our national game. And the Nats are set to bring in a range of tough new measures in time for next season – which could see soccer thugs and internet hate merchants hammered with five-year jail terms.

Controversy ... Neil Lennon

Controversy … Neil Lennon

Last night a Scottish Government insider said: “These laws will ensure there will be no hiding place for the bigots, hatemongers and troublemakers.

“If you’re one of them, we’re coming after you. The decent people of Scotland are fed up and want an end to this scandalous situation once and for all.”At the moment, yobs who cause trouble at matches are charged with breach of the peace – which carries a maximum one-year jail term. But the new laws would see offenders indicted on offences covering behaviour that is threatening, abusive, disorderly or offensive. If they are found guilty the courts will be able to lock them up for a maximum of five years. The legislation will also include online hate crime – with the same tough prison sentences. It will be updated to include those who post vile Twitter rants. The proposals are expected to go to Cabinet a week on Tuesday, before being presented to the Scottish Parliament – with the aim of having them in place by August.

Flashpoint ... alleged attack on Lennon

And they will be driven home along with a string of other initiatives, including penalties levelled on football clubs.

The architect and enforcer of the hardline new measures is Solicitor General Frank Mulholland, who has helped the SNP drive crime levels down to a 30-year low.Mr Salmond’s Government is desperate to act after a season which saw Celtic boss Neil Lennon targeted in an alleged mail bomb plot. The Hoops gaffer was also allegedly attacked by Hearts fan John Wilson, 26, during his side’s win at Hearts on Wednesday night. And Lennon was at the centre of more controversy when he and Rangers No2 Ally McCoist squared up to each other in March’s Old Firm shame game. The SPL season comes to a dramatic close tomorrow – with Celtic and Rangers both fighting it out for the title. The Ibrox side are a point clear of their arch-rivals and travel to face Kilmarnock at Rugby Park, while the Hoops are at home against Motherwell.Strathclyde cops are already preparing for potential trouble with around 1,000 officers being deployed throughout the force area tomorrow. Ticket cordons will be set up around Rugby Park to prevent flashpoints caused by Gers fans gaining tickets for the Killie sections of the stadium.Plain clothes police spotters will also mingle with the 18,000 crowd to identify and curb incidents as they happen. And extra officers will also be deployed around the dugout in the wake of the alleged attack on Lennon at Tynecastle. The same preventative action will be taken in and around Celtic Park for the other title decider. And a high-profile police presence will be seen on the streets throughout tomorrow evening to deal with any troublemakers.Strathclyde Police Chief Superintendent John Thomson, who is Divisional Commander at Rugby Park tomorrow, said the message to fans is clear: “Misbehave and you’ll go to jail.”Despite a raft of measures aimed at eliminating any trouble before it begins, Ch Supt Thomson warned supporters his officers wouldn’t hesitate to arrest offenders if they step out of line.He said: “There will be a ring of steel around Rugby Park. If you don’t have a ticket, don’t come to the match.“If your behaviour is sectarian it is criminal. You will be arrested and remanded in custody until you appear in court the following day.“On Sunday, we have 1,000 officers on duty. You will see additional officers around Rugby Park and Celtic Park and in Glasgow city centre. My message is simple – if you’re team prevails, enjoy yourself. If not, behave yourself.”We have an opportunity to be talking about football on Sunday and not the more sinister elements we’ve witnessed in recent times.”At Celtic Park, my colleagues want to see 60,000 fans arrive and leave safely. Offenders will be dealt with robustly.”More than 229 people were arrested in the Strathclyde Police region after a Celtic-Rangers clash in February. Then followed the Scottish Cup shame game. However, warnings issued by cops for the CIS League Cup final between the sides paid off as arrests fell by around a quarter.Fans were also praised for behaving at the last Old Firm clash on April 24 – but Lennon was criticised for cupping his ear in a gesture said to rile Ibrox home fans.Mr Salmond hopes supporters will stay out of trouble tomorrow – and avoid marring the season finale. He said: “As we reach the end of a week where Scottish football has dominated the headlines for all of the wrong reasons, I want all football fans to get behind our teams for the right reasons.”This is our national game and we are passionate about it, so let’s claim it back for real supporters, and show the world that Scottish football is a force for good and something to be proud of.”
