Celtic manager Neil Lennon hit by fan

A man has been arrested in connection with an attack on Celtic manager Neil Lennon during the second half of his team’s game against Hearts. The fan clambered from the Hearts section of the main stand at Tynecastle in Edinburgh after Celtic’s second goal and made for Lennon on the touchline. He connected with Lennon before being bundled to the ground and arrested.Earlier this season parcel bombs addressed to Lennon, his lawyer and a politician were intercepted by police.Celtic won Wednesday night’s game 3-0 to ensure the Scottish Premier League title race goes to the final day.The incident occurred after their second goal, in the 49th minute.A supporter ran along the touchline towards Lennon and made contact with the Celtic manager before being pushed to the ground by police and stewards, handcuffed and bundled out of the stadium.Trouble then broke out in the Celtic section of the ground between fans and police. The Celtic manager looked stunned after the attack but was uninjured.Lothian and Borders Police said a man had been reported to the procurator fiscal and would appear in court in connection with the incident.A police spokesman said: “A number of incidents took place during this match including some violent disorder.”Lothian and Borders Police will fully investigate all of the incidents that occurred at the match this evening and will work closely with both football clubs and the SPL.”Scottish Football Association chief executive Stewart Regan issued a statement, saying: “Clearly this kind of behaviour from supporters is wholly unacceptable.”The safety of players, club officials and match officials is paramount on or around the field of play, and this clear breach of security is a matter I will be discussing with SPL chief executive Neil Doncaster tomorrow.”Mr Doncaster said he was “shocked and appalled” by the incident. He said the incident would be investigated thoroughly.First Minister Alex Salmond said: “This sort of behaviour is utterly unacceptable.”The Joint Action Group formed after the recent football summit is developing the eight-point plan to present to ministers before the start of the new season to tackle all issues of violence and bigotry in relation to football, because we cannot have the safety of individuals endangered by such mindless incidents, and our national game tarnished.”Hearts vowed to give its full co-operation to the authorities during the investigation into the incident.A club statement said: “An investigation into events which took place in the second half of tonight’s game against Celtic is now under way.”Hearts is a club which prides itself on its ‘football for all’ policy and these sorts of actions have no place in the game of football.”Former Northern Ireland player Lennon has been in the headlines regularly this season. In January a package addressed to him containing bullets was intercepted at a sorting office in Country Antrim. In March, the club confirmed Lennon was under 24-hour security surveillance after a suspicious package was intercepted at a Royal Mail sorting office in Saltcoats, Ayrshire. On 19 April it emerged that Royal Mail intercepted a total of two “viable” parcel bombs addressed to Lennon.

Rangers hitman Kyle Lafferty: We’ll stay focused to avoid ‘Helicopter Sunday’ drama

walter smith salutes the rangers fans after his last match as boss at ibrox

RANGERS striker Kyle Lafferty says he couldn’t bear the thought of Walter Smith ending his Ibrox career without a league title. The Northern Irishman struck the second goal as Rangers beat Dundee United 2-0 at Ibrox last night to move to the brink of the SPL title.Second-placed Celtic head to Hearts tonight and, should the Parkhead side lose, then the championship will be Rangers for a third season in succession. But if Neil Lennon’s players get the three points they need at Tynecastle then the title will go right down to the wire – bringing back memories of the ‘Helicopter Sunday’ drama in 2005.Back then Celtic went to Motherwell leading the table by two points going into the final match. Two late goals saw Well snatch an unexpected 2-1 victory and handed Rangers the league flag in the most dramatic fashion.
Lafferty says he would be heartbroken if such a turn of events were to work against Rangers this weekend. He told his club’s official website: “Some people are saying we have one hand on the trophy now after we beat United but we aren’t thinking like that at all.”Until we cross the finishing line with the three points we need, we will be focused on what we have to do.”Everyone knows what happened on Helicopter Sunday and if that kind of thing were to happen to our group of players I think it would be heart-breaking.”It’s the gaffer’s last season and I don’t think we’re going to let it come to that. We’re going to go out and give our all to pick up the three points at Killie we need.”Smith, meanwhile, has admitted his surprise at being on the brink of another SPL title. The Ibrox boss was unable to buy a player for almost two years until signing Jelavic in August for £4million, but soon lost the Croatia striker for almost four months to an ankle injury. The financial uncertainty was only cleared up last week when Craig Whyte finally completed his takeover of the club, allowing players the chance to plan long term after living under threat of being sold in recent seasons.Smith also suffered the losses of Lee McCulloch and Jamie Ness in recent months, as well as seeing top goalscorer Kenny Miller depart in January, and he believes his players’ adaptability makes them worthy of winning a medal.”We are happy to be getting to the stage of the season we’re at now where we are coming to a conclusion,” Smith told the Rangers News.”If I’m honest, we’re maybe a bit surprised as well to still be in contention to win the title after all we’ve had to go through.”From that point of view, I don’t think I could say anything other than that the players would deserve it if they won the league.”I’ve taken a lot of pride in what the team have done over the last four and a half years and especially in the last couple of seasons when the team has won titles.”The boys have had a very awkward situation where they’ve all been up for sale and contracts have not been renewed.”It has not been an easy time but despite all that, they have handled things superbly and got on with their task.”The players have been great. All the boys who have played with us have shown a great level of commitment towards playing for the club.”It has been a very successful period and my biggest hope is we can get ourselves more silverware this week.”
