Honest Gold takes West Ham blame

West Ham will allow their England internationals to leave if the club are relegated, says co-owner David Gold. The Hammers are bottom of the Premier League, three points from safety with only three games remaining.”It’s unfair to tell a player to forego your potential England career to come down and play in the Championship,” Gold told the BBC’s Football Focus.Scott Parker, Carlton Cole, Robert Green and Matthew Upson are all now established England squad regulars. With home games against Blackburn and Sunderland, sandwiched by a trip to fellow-strugglers Wigan, the prospects of the east London side playing in the top-flight next season look bleak. The Hammers have won only twice away from Upton Park in the league this season.Co-owner David Sullivan admitted he opted not to attend his side’s 2-1 defeat at Manchester City on 1 May because of their miserable away form. And Gold’s words to Football Focus, to be broadcast on Saturday, are another stark warning to what could be in store for the Upton Park faithful if the Hammers go down.

“It’s unrealistic to ask an England player to come down and play in the Championship,” warned Gold, who has recently been in hospital, where he was treated for cholangitis – an infection of the common bile duct – and septicaemia.”It impacts on his career. Would I try [to stop them]? Of course, I would try but you would have a one in 10 chance.”And regarding the increasing likelihood of the east Londoners dropping out of the Premier League, 74-year-old Gold added: “Do I blame myself? There is no doubt you end up blaming yourself.”You go over the decisions you have made and yes, you have to take the blame. At the time you think you have done the best job. When the [January transfer] window closed I thought we had done enough.”Midfielder Parker would be a prime target for many of the league’s top clubs, having been voted Player of the Year for 2011 by the Football Writers’ Association.Other players who have forced their way into England manager Fabio Capello’s plans that could also be set for a Hammers exit are goalkeeper Green, defender Upson and striker Cole.Gold bought West Ham in 2010 with Sullivan, his business partner and fellow former co-owner of Birmingham City. The full interview with David Gold can be seen on Football Focus on Saturday 7 May on BBC One and the BBC Sport website

12 arrests after town centre fighting on day of Rovers last home game

Published on Friday 6 May 2011 09:05

FOOTBALL yobs are thought to have been behind two mass brawls in Doncaster town centre which left men injured, police have revealed.Detectives say both incidents are thought to have been related to the Doncaster Rovers v Leicester, on Saturday afternoon, even though one of the outbreaks of violence was while the match was going on.Fans of both clubs are thought to have been involved in the trouble, according to police. The first incident took place on Hall Gate at about 1.20pm.Around 20 men, thought to be aged between 20 and 40, were all involved in a fight. Six men were arrested for public order offences and have been bailed. Minor injuries were sustained by some of the men involved. The second incident took place on St George’s Gate at approximately 4.20pm – while the Championship game was still being played at the Keepmoat Stadium. A further 15 men, of similar ages to those involved in the earlier violence, were involved in another fight.Officers are trying to find out why the second outbreak of violence was happening during the match.Another six men were arrested for public order offences and have been bailed. Minor injuries were sustained by some of the men involved.Police say they believe all those who were injured in the incident had been involved in the violence. No property was damaged during the violence.Det Cons Peter Muir, who is investigating the incidents, said: “This type of behaviour is not acceptable. Football hooliganism is generally not a problem in Doncaster and the majority of football matches take place without any issues occurring.“These people have ruined an enjoyable Saturday afternoon for the general public in town by behaving violently and it will not be tolerated.“I would urge anyone who witnessed either incident to come forward to assist with the investigation.”The match between Rovers and Leicester was the final home game of the season for Rovers at the Keepmoat, and finished in a 1-1 draw.Rovers went into the game needing a point to guarantee they were not relegated into League One.Leicester went into the game with an outside chance of qualifying for the promotion play-off places.

Craig Whyte and Sir David Murray are awaiting the necessary paperwork from the Takeover Panel in London to conclude the sale of the majority shareholding in Rangers Football Club.

STV understands Whyte is currently at a laywer’s office in Edinburgh awaiting the papers, with the expectation being his and Murray’s signatures could have been put to a deal on Thursday evening. However a last minute hiccup has postponed an announcement on the takeover’s conclusion, with all parties expected to work into the night to ensure a deal is finalised on Friday. There is no obstacle to Whyte’s offer being announced outside of the business hours of the Stock Exchange, with the board of Rangers obliged only to make an announcement which conforms with a small set of rules, none of which include waiting until the markets have reopened.Whyte held discussions with Murray at the headquarters of Murray International Holdings (MIH) earlier on Thursday as he attempted to finalise a deal that will see him take a controlling interest in the Ibrox club.Broad agreement had already been reached over the purchase of MIH’s 85 per cent stake in Rangers and the deal has the approval of Lloyds Bank, with whom Rangers have significant debt. The long-running discussions, which began in November when Whyte declared his intention to buy the club, now appear to be reaching a conclusion. The sale would see Murray receive £6 million for his stake and the majority of the club’s debt to Lloyds Bank being paid off with a small portion being refinanced.Though objections had been raised by a vetting committee at Ibrox, Rangers chairman Alastair Johnston has said that the club’s board had now given the deal their approval. Though the sub-committee could not block the sale, it did have the powers to delay it.The principal concern raised by the board was over the funding available to take the club forward, with the businessman thought to have increased the initial amount that would be made available to Ally McCoist to improve the playing squad. A rival bid was proposed by Rangers director Paul Murray, with the backing of another investor, but Sir David Murray continued to see Whyte as the preferred buyer.Whyte has not yet formally announced a bid to the Stock Exchange, but with the objections of the board removed, it is expected that the sale will be finalised shortly.
