Bury’s promotion party marred as yob Chesterfield fan punches goalkeeper

Police made an arrest after Bury goalkeeper Cameron Belford was shamefully punched by a fan who ran on the pitch at Chesterfield.The incident occurred during celebrations for one of the home team’s goals, and Belford, 22, whose side won 3-2 to clinch promotion to League One, made an official complaint after the game.

Derbyshire Police Detective Inspector Russell Dankin confirmed a supporter had been arrested and promised to review further footage of the incident.’It would appear a fan has encroached on the pitch and assaulted the goalkeeper.’One person has been arrested and we will be scanning the CCTV system and liaising with the club and members of the media and collating as much evidence as possible.’

Chesterfield’s stadium boss Colin Nellist added: ‘The very minimum that will happen to this person is they will get a ban from the club and whatever happens thereafter will depend on the courts.’But as soon as we ascertain the identity of this person he will be banned from the club until further notice because we take this very seriously indeed.’We have had over 9,000 people here but a mindless few spoiled the day for everyone.’Belford, who kept his cool, had the last laugh after League Two Player of the Year Ryan Lowe scored Bury’s winner and caretaker boss Richie Barker said: ‘The lads want to follow that by overtaking Chesterfield for the winner’s medals.’

Stockport, meanwhile, are on their way out of the Football League, just 13 years after finishing eighth in what is now the Championship.Greg Tansey’s 40-yard shot in the closing minutes earned a 2-2 draw at home to Northampton, but Stockport would have to win their last two games by an aggregate of at least 35 goals to survive.Tansey’s goal meant boss Gary Johnson has still not won a game in 11 matches since taking over at Northampton.His team would have joined Stockport in the relegation zone but for two late strikes by Oxford’s James Constable that meantBarnet gave up a 2-0 lead.
