Tottenham 3 3 Arsenal

Rafael van der Vaart (right) celebrates his first goal
Van der Vaart scored twice to earn Spurs a deserved point

By Phil McNulty
Chief football writer at White Hart Lane

Arsenal’s Premier League title hopes were dealt another devastating blow as they squandered a two-goal lead to draw a north London derby classic with Tottenham at White Hart Lane.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger needed victory desperately to apply pressure on Manchester United after the leaders drew at Newcastle United on Tuesday – but this share of the spoils leaves Arsenal third in the table and six points adrift with only five games left.In a contest that was enthralling from first whistle to last, Theo Walcott put the visitors in front early on only for Rafael van der Vaart to peg them back as Spurs drew level quickly.Samir Nasri and Robin van Persie looked to have given the Gunners command as the interval approached, but Tom Huddlestone’s goal for the home side right on half-time was pivotal, giving Harry Redknapp’s side renewed hope.

Redknapp pleased to match Arsenal

And it was justified as Van der Vaart scored from the spot with 20 minutes left after Arsenal keeper Wojciech Szczesny fouled substitute Aaron Lennon, giving Spurs a point they deserved and moving them to within two points of fourth-placed Manchester City as the hunt for a place in next season’s Champions League intensifies.Wenger, animated throughout, looked resigned at the end of a magnificent game that was a credit to both sides – something that will be little consolation to the Gunners’ boss as he now stares at the prospect of another season without a trophy. The north London duo provided a feast of flowing attacking football, a candidate for the Premier League’s best game of the season, that allowed Szczesny and his Spurs counterpart Heurelho Gomes to excel by producing a series of outstanding saves. And there was little doubt Redknapp was the more satisfied manager when referee Martin Atkinson blew the whistle on a breathless evening in which Arsenal stretched their unbeaten league run to 16 games but probably lost their battle to win the title.Wenger surprisingly left out Jack Wilshere to accommodate Alex Song in central midfield – and the teenager was as gripped as everyone inside White Hart Lane by a sensational first half.Arsenal struck the first blow after five minutes when Walcott’s pace took him on to Cesc Fabregas’s pass and away from the Spurs defence to roll a cool finish beyond Gomes into the corner. The celebrations lasted less than two minutes as Redknapp’s side struck back swiftly, Van der Vaart scoring at Szczensy’s near post from Vedran Corluka’s pass into the area.

Wenger promises title fight

In a scintillating opening spell, the Gunners were back in front with only 12 minutes gone. Abou Diaby found Nasri 20 yards out and his shot took a faint touch off Michael Dawson to beat the unsighted Gomes.Walcott’s speed was posing a problem Spurs were struggling to solve and he was inches away from increasing the visitors’ lead after 28 minutes when he was released by Van Persie – and Spurs were almost on the mark themselves when the industrious Luka Modric saw his shot blocked by Szczesny.Wenger’s men looked to have put daylight between themselves and their opponents five minutes before the interval. Van Persie was the scorer from close range after Gomes had done brilliantly to claw out his header. It was a lead that was reduced only five minutes later as the half came to a stunning conclusion, Huddlestone thumping a finish past the motionless Szczesny after Fabregas could only partially clear. The hosts also had presentable claims for a penalty rejected by referee Atkinson when Modric tangled with Johan Djourou as he raced into the box.Redknapp was forced into a double change at the start of the second half, with Gareth Bale and Corluka being replaced by Younes Kaboul and Lennon. Bale had been struggling badly after two hefty collisions with keeper Szczesny – although on both occasions the Arsenal keeper’s challenges were perfectly acceptable. The Gunners had not been found wanting in the physical exchanges and both Song and Djourou were booked early in the second half for fouls on Modric as Spurs pressed forward in an attempt to force an equaliser.Wenger then introduced Wilshere for Diaby, who had picked up a knock, and cut a tortured figure in the technical area as Walcott once again sliced the home side open, only to see his delivery fly across the face of goal without any team-mate able to apply the decisive touch.Redknapp’s men had exerted more control and levelled again with 20 minutes left, Van der Vaart scoring from the spot after Szczesny had fouled Lennon.Arsenal’s talented young keeper then made amends with a crucial point-blank block from Modric when it seemed certain the Croat would give Spurs the lead for the first time in this rollercoaster encounter.Gomes was hardly idle at the other end, twice saving well from Fabregas as the visitors knew a draw would not be sufficient as they chase down Manchester United.Szczesny was next to excel with a save of agility and excellence to turn Peter Crouch’s goalbound header over the bar. He followed this up with further saves from Van der Vaart and Spurs substitute Sandro.Honours ended even – but for Wenger and his players this may well prove to be the final setback in a frustrating and fruitless hunt for the title.

Michael Owen bemused by Newcastle United boos

Michael Owen
Owen has scored four in 13 games for Manchester United this season Manchester United striker Michael Owen says he was disappointed after being booed by Newcastle fans during Tuesday’s 0-0 draw at St James’ Park. The former Magpies man was jeered when he came on after 81 minutes. Owen said on Twitter: “Got a poor reception off the home fans which was disappointing. Was desperate to score!” He added: “Knew I would get booed as that’s what a lot of fans do but if they knew the facts then they may have a different opinion.” Owen joined Newcastle from Real Madrid for £16m in 2005 and scored 30 goals in 79 appearances in an injury-hit four years on Tyneside. The England striker was unable to prevent Newcastle being relegated to the Championship in 2009 and left the club that summer to join Manchester United on a free transfer.

MICHAEL OWEN CAREER

  • Manchester United: 44 appearances 13 goals
  • Newcastle United: 79 appearances 30 goals
  • Real Madrid: 40 appearances 14 goals
  • Liverpool: 297 appearances 158 goals
  • England: 89 caps 40 goals

After Tuesday’s match, Owen, 31, hit back at negative comments from Magpies’ fans, saying (hereafter all quotes are reported verbatim): “From what most of you Newcastle fans are saying you should be pleased I left the club! If i had known that earlier I could have left sooner!”For the record, I tried my best in every game for Newcastle. Under KK (Kevin Keegan) I played well and i’ll never forget the 2 I scored against Sunderland (on 20 April 2008).”When I meet Newcastle or Liverpool fans they all respect what I’ve done for their clubs. In stadiums it changes, 1 boo and the rest follow.”By the way, im not looking for sympathy. As long as my family don’t boo me when I walk through the door I couldn’t care less!!!”Owen had expected a difficult reception on his return to St James’ Park, saying prior to the game: “What a day, it’s even sunny here in Newcastle! Looking forward to seeing old friends but I doubt the fans will give me a warm reception!”The result meant Manchester United missed the chance to open up a nine-point gap at the top of the Premier League table – with Arsenal seven points behind with a game in hand.Owen added: “Disappointing result but credit to Newcastle, they played well and put us under plenty of pressure especially in the first half an hour.”But after the game, Owen, who has more than 120,000 followers on Twitter, was involved in a frank exchange with the Daily Mirror’s chief sports writer Oliver Holt on the social networking site.Owen aired his views on his Twitter page after facing Newcastle

Owen and Holt’s Twitter exchange in full:

Holt: “Honest question then Michael: why don’t you tell them the facts?”

Owen: “I try to answer most questions Ollie but can’t be bothered* being a back page story so some things don’t need to be said!”

*The BBC has substituted “bothered” for the word Michael Owen actually used

Holt: “Fair enough, Michael. But I think sometimes if fans and journalists knew facts, there would be more sympathy with players.”

Owen: “Fair point. The relationship between players and media is poor and needs improving as the people who suffer are fans.”

Holt: “Probably worse now between media and players than back in 97-98 when you burst on to scene. More contact then, I think.”

Owen: “If papers printed what is actually said then i think players would talk to you more openly. I know I would.”

Holt: “You have spent a lot of your career writing for our newspapers, though Michael, both tabloids and broadsheets.”

Owen: “It’s the sensationalising of headlines that annoys most players. It makes us look like clowns when most lads are normal.”

Holt: “Headlines are a problem for a lot of writers, too. Comes down to trusting a journalist to look after you, I suppose.”

Owen: “But I made sure I had headline approval! My point is, the articles are fine, it’s the headlines that make us look stupid.”

Holt: “Agreed. Think we are at a point where writers need to fight for right headline to ensure bit of trust with player spoken to”

Owen: “And there is my point. The trust just isn’t there hence the relationship between players and journalists is non existent.”

Holt: “Players and media stuck in bad cycle now. Understand why trust has broken down but less contact is making things worse. Part of problem is no contact. GNev (Gary Neville) said journos should stay in England hotel so we’d have to face you after bad piece.”

Letter bombs sent to Celtic manager Neil Lennon designed to ‘maim or kill’

Neil Lennon Image 2

LETHAL letter bombs have been sent to Celtic manager Neil Lennon, his QC Paul McBride and MSP Trish Godman. The parcels were all intercepted before they were opened. But a police source said the bombs were all “viable” and added: “They were designed to maim, injure or kill.”Two packages were addressed to Lennon – one at Celtic Park and the other at the club’s training ground in Lennoxtown. The package to McBride was addressed to the Faculty of Advocates but was intercepted at a sorting office in Kilwinning, Ayrshire, after a suspicious collection driver reported his concerns about the packet. It is understood the one to Godman was delivered to her home and had a stamp but had not been processed through the normal mail system. It may have been dropped off by hand. All the packages were discovered before they were opened. It is believed the packages contained nails.Lennon was quizzed about suspect packages during a TV interview today but declined to comment. But a friend of McBride confirmed he had been made aware of the device sent to him at the weekend. The QC has since been visited in person by senior counter terrorism detectives who briefed him about the matter. The source said: “Paul was told that if he had opened the package he would have been blinded, at least.”He is very grateful that nobody has been injured and most grateful to the authorities for the professional way in which they have handled the matter.”All three targets have now been given advice on their personal security. And all their mail is now being intercepted by the authorities and carefully examined before it is forwarded to them.First Minister Alex Salmond said: “There is a major investigation underway to ensure that those concerned are identified and then brought to book with the full force of the law. We will not tolerate this sortof criminality in Scotland.”The first device intended for Lennon was sent last month and was uncovered in Saltcoats, Ayrshire. A second was discovered last week. The bomb sent to McBride was found on Friday. The parcel addressed to Godman, Holyrood’s first deputy presiding officer, was also discovered last weekDetectives believe the devices are the work of the same individual who perceives high-profile people linked to Celtic as legitimate targets.A source close to the bomb inquiry told the Daily Record: “There is a definite link in the timescales of these people being highlighted in the media and the delivery of the devices. There is no question about that.”Lennon has been outspoken in his criticism of the footballing authorities this season and has clocked up bans for misconduct.McBride represented him during his appeals against disciplinary action and has also made a series of verbal attacks on the SFA over their handling of various matters relating to Celtic.Godman, 71, who served as MSP for West Renfrewshire, is stepping down as an MSP and is not contesting next month’s election.Pals said the “mad-keen” Hoops fan wore a Celtic jersey on her last day as an MSP as a light-hearted gesture.Police have also taken to steps to warn one other person about the possibility of a bomb threat given the pattern which has emerged in recent days. She is BBC broadcaster Aasmah Mir, 39, the wife of Piara Powar, executive director of Football Against Racism in Europe (Fare), who are an independent anti-discrimination group based in London.FARE recently reported Rangers to UEFA, the governing body of European football, over sectarian songs.Detectives are seeking the assistance of police forces throughout the UK including Northern Ireland as they try to track down the bombmaker. It is believed the packages may have been posted in Scotland but a source said: “It is not known if the bombs are being made in Scotland.”A huge police operation has now been mounted. The investigation has been put in the hands of Scotland’s elite Major Crime and Terrorism Investigation Unit based in Govan, Glasgow.
