Wayne Rooney’s hat-trick inspired Premier League leaders Manchester United to fight back from two goals down to beat West Ham.

A Patrice Evra handball and Nemanja Vidic foul on Carlton Cole allowed Mark Noble to twice score from the spot for the relegation-battling Hammers.Vidic escaped a red card for a foul on Demba Ba before Rooney curled in a free-kick and powered in a shot.A Rooney penalty put the visitors ahead and Javier Hernandez poked in a fourth.The importance of the win was signified as United increased their lead over Arsenal, who were held by Blackburn, to seven points and moved 11 points in front of a Chelsea side held 1-1 at Stoke as their rivals slipped up in the later games.

Angry scenes after Linfield win

Angry scenes after the final whistle marred Linfield’s crucial Carling Premiership victory at Seaview on Friday night which ended Crusaders’ long winning streak.Players and officials from both teams were involved in heated exchanges and pushing and shoving before stewards eventually brought the trouble under control.Neither manager would answer questions from reporters about the incidents which could be the subject of an IFA enquiry depending on the referee’s report.

Robbie Garrett’s 86th minute winner clinched Linfield’s win as he blasted the ball home from 12 yards out after meeting a great cross from Michael Carvill which the Crues defence failed to clear.Peter Thompson had a shot cleared off the line earlier on in the second half of a disappointing contest.The win moves the Blues three points clear of the Crues at the top of the table.It was a largely drab first half devoid of flowing football and with chances at a premium.Stuart Dallas shot over the bar early on and then Peter Thompson’s effort suffered a similar fate at the other end.Mark McAllister came closest to giving the Blues the lead when his 36th minute header from a Jim Ervin pass shaved the post.Then the former. Dungannon player’s shot whistled inches past the far post four minutes later.It was a feisty opening 45 minutes and referee Davy Malcolm booked Linfield’s Garrett and Crusaders’ Chris Morrow for over-zealous tackles.The teams went into the game level on points at the top of the table although Linfield had a vastly superior goal difference and the benefit of a game in hand.But Crusaders were the form team with 10 wins out of their last 10 starts while the Blues had dropped nine points in the same period.Ironically the Crues’ last defeat had come at the hands of David Jeffrey’s side who won the corresponding game 3-1 at Windsor Park on January 4th.At the end of the same month Linfield had built up a 12 points lead at the top of the table which was whittled away by some inconsistent form, notably draws with Ballymena, Newry and Glenavon and defeat to Coleraine, coupled with the Crues’ winning streak.But that was ended when Garrett popped up to score that dramatic late winner as the Blues edged ever closer to a 50th title.
