Celtic 1 2 Rangers

Scott Brown and Maurice Edu
The Old Firm served up an absorbing cup final at Hampden

By Andy Campbell

Nikica Jelavic grabbed an extra-time winner as Rangers triumphed against Old Firm rivals Celtic in the Co-operative Insurance Cup final.

Rangers took the lead through Steven Davis’ strike but Joe Ledley headed Celtic level on 31 minutes. The second half was tense with Celtic’s Fraser Forster saving from Steven Whittaker and Rangers keeper Neil Alexander denying Ledley. But Jelavic fired in off the post in the 98th minute to win it for Rangers.Rangers’ win ends Celtic’s hopes of a domestic treble but, with both sides chasing the Scottish Premier League and Celtic still in the Scottish Cup, each Old Firm club remain in contention for a trophy double. And the cup victory also means a 20th trophy win for Walter Smith in his last cup final as Rangers manager.Captain Scott Brown and defenders Thomas Rogne and Mark Wilson returned to the Celtic line-up, replacing Ki Sung-Yeung, Glenn Loovens and Efrain Juarez, all of whom featured on the substitutes’ bench.Goalkeeper Alexander retained his place in the Rangers team, Allan McGregor left out as is custom in this competition, while there were also starts in attack for Steven Naismith and Jelavic as the cup-tied Richard Foster and injured Kyle Bartley dropped out. After the previous Old Firm match’s highly-publicised flashpoints, referee Craig Thomson’s first big decision came on the quarter-hour mark.Wilson burst into the Rangers box and went to ground as Davis and Sasa Papac closed the Celtic player down but no penalty was forthcoming.Celtic almost went in front when Kris Commons’ teasing cross found Brown diving in at the back post but the skipper’s header flew past the post. And it was Rangers who got their noses in front when Davis pounced upon Charlie Mulgrew’s defensive header, drove at the Celtic defence and guided a low left-foot shot into the net via the post in the 24th minute. But Neil Lennon’s side levelled when Emilio Izaguirre’s deflected cross was nodded on by Georgios Samaras and Ledley arrived to glance the ball past Alexander.Rangers thought they had been awarded a penalty when Jelavic went to ground following Rogne’s tackle and referee Thomson initially appeared to point to the spot. However, after advice from one of his assistants, the whistler changed his mind and booked the Rangers striker for simulation. The Ibrox side started the second period positively and Whittaker forced Fraser Forster into a save with a stinging drive.Celtic went back on the attack and Papac was inches away from scoring an own goal after his attempted clearance from Commons’ centre spun across the face of goal.Maurice Edu tried to force his way past Wilson and the Rangers players claimed in vain that the Celtic defender had used his arm to block the ball’s path but referee Thomson again waved play on.Another Wylde delivery, this time from a free-kick, nearly caught out Forster, the Celtic keeper retreating to palm the ball over.Brown and Rogne had made way for Ki and Loovens respectively and Rangers made an enforced change of their own when Madjid Bougherra came off to be replaced by Kyle Hutton.Loovens’ presence at a Celtic corner caused problems for the Rangers defence and Ledley got a shot away only to be foiled by Alexander’s positioning.Vladimir Weiss came on for the final seconds of regulation time and, after the match moved into extra-time, the winger played a big part in the final reckoning. The Slovakian was fouled on the edge of the box and Jelavic’s effort from the free-kick was deflected off the wall but Forster reacted superbly to claw the ball over. But Jelavic was not to be denied with his next attempt, the striker brushing off the challenge of Mulgrew to latch on to Weiss’s quickly taken free-kick and sliding a shot past Forster, the ball rebounding off the right-hand post but spinning back over the line.Jelavic tried to get the better of Mulgrew again as the pair went one-on-one at a Rangers attack and, though the Celtic man committed a foul on the edge of the box, referee Thomson produced a yellow card, judging Mulgrew as not having denied a clear goalscoring opportunity.El-Hadji Diouf replaced Jelavic for the closing stages and set up Weiss for a shot that required a last-ditch save by Forster.Diouf was then booked for simulation near the halfway line.Celtic pressed for late leveller and Gary Hooper was denied by an excellent tackle by Whittaker.Celtic were reduced to 10 men in injury time when Izaguirre was shown a straight red card for barging Weiss over as the Rangers player tried to take advantage of Forster’s absence from his goal, minutes before the final whistle.

Gareth Bale
Bale is regarded as one of Europe’s best young players

Tottenham winger Gareth Bale has signed a new four-and-a-half year contract to remain at White Hart Lane until 2015.

The new agreement replaces the 21-year-old Wales international’s previous deal, which would have run until 2014.Spurs manager Harry Redknapp said: “It’s great to have Gareth sign a new contract at the club.”He is a fantastic player and the type we need to be keeping at Spurs. He’s got his whole future ahead and he has everything going for him.”Bale has earned a global reputation this season after some outstanding displays in the Champions League, highlighted by his hat-trick against Inter Milan at the San Siro.

City to entice Mourinho with £10m-a-year deal, but Jose wants dream job at United

Jose Mourinho, told that his dream job of replacing Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford will have to wait for at least another year, is wanted by Manchester United‘s ‘noisy neighbours’. With Roberto Mancini said by one insider at Manchester City to be on borrowed time following the club’s Europa League exit on Thursday night, Mourinho is the club’s No1 target to replace the Italian this summer. The man who turned Chelsea into Premier League champions will be offered a £10million-a-year deal to take charge at Eastlands and will have to choose between staying at Real Madrid while waiting for Ferguson to retire or joining City and going head-to-head with his old friend and rival. That the Scot intends to stay on for at least another year will be welcome news at Old Trafford but it could mean United missing out on a manager who is among the most qualified to succeed him. One Premier League source said: ‘Jose has learned that Ferguson has no intention of retiring in the foreseeable future.’ Mourinho is keen to return to the Premier League sooner rather than later after the breakdown of his relationship with Madrid president Florentino Perez and director general Jorge Valdano. With La Liga success unlikely this season, there is still plenty for him to achieve at Real, but he could yet go out on a high in the Champions League. City will make a convincing case for him to take over from Mancini, with money to spend and a golden legacy to build.

SAFC football yobs bring disgrace on their club

A SOCCER yob snared in a clash with police was a ringleader in one of the region’s most notorious moments of football madness.X was among a mob of Sunderland fans who battled with police stopping an ambush by rival Newcastle thugs.Four police dogs were hurt in the mayhem while three men needed hospital treatment, and footage posted on the internet showed one lying unconscious in a pool of blood.X 40, kept his freedom on a 51-week suspended jail term after admitting affray. But he was served with a tough Football Banning Order to keep him away from any match for the next five years.Newcastle Crown Court heard the 40-year-old from Maud Street, Fulwell, Sunderland, had been a key figure in the battle between ultra Newcastle and Sunderland hooligans at North Shields ferry terminal in 2000.“It is quite clear X was very much one of the leaders of that particular incident,” said Christopher Knox, prosecuting.“There was by prior agreement a confrontation between the Seaburn Casuals – still a term in point today and some still have tattoos to prove it – and the Newcastle Gremlins.“There was an extremely violent confrontation involving the use of weapons. It’s right to say X was very much one of the leaders of that operation”.The battle – organised by the rival gangs – was so savage it was compared to a scene from the movie Braveheart. One man found unconscious on the Quayside had suffered a life-threatening head injury and been stabbed in the back. X received a four-year jail sentence after being convicted of conspiracy to commit violent disorder. But he restored his links to football after his release from prison. And he was among Sunderland fans whose trains arrived at Central Station from an away game in Scotland on August 8, 2009
