Sir Alex Ferguson refused to speak to media rights holders on Sunday following the game at Liverpool, which Manchester United lost 3-1.

The United manager did not talk to host broadcaster Sky Sports, radio rights holders TalkSport and the club’s television channel MUTV.His assistant Mike Phelan did not carry out his usual post-match engagements with the BBC.The decision not to speak to the media was made before the game.

Shutting fans out of Old Firm matches is a real option, warns former First Minister Henry McLeish

HENRY McLEISH last night warned that the possibility of Old Firm matches being played behind closed doors was real.

The former First Minister joined the debate over last week’s fiery Scottish Cup replay and insisted that it was up to the clubs to put their house in order.McLeish said: “There have been a number of draconian suggestions made about playing behind closed doors.”But no one should be in any doubt that these are valid options if the clubs don’t start to deal with the problems which everyone could see in last week’s game.”Leading police figures made the call for the games to be played behind closed doors due to the amount of violence which surrounds and follows them and there were even suggestions of Old Firm clashes not being broadcast on television, a move which would wreak havoc with the game’s finances.Reflect McLeish, who in the last year produced a two-part report for the SFA aimed at improving Scottish football, was speaking ahead of tomorrow’s summit meeting called by current First Minister Alex Salmond to discuss the incidents during, and the fall-out from, last week’s match.He added: “The First Minister was phoned by the police so he had to reflect on that and take some action. He will be concerned about the fact that this is an issue that’s beamed worldwide.”I’d like to think that the clubs themselves would acknowledge there were problems and start to address some of those issues.”I don’t think it has been hyped up or over-exaggerated. Scotland is concerned about its national game and the Government are concerned.”Quite frankly, the clubs don’t live in a blue or green-and-white vacuum.”The clubs must put their own house in order. I don’t think the response has been adequate.”A lot of people believe that in some instances players have got too big for the game, there is no respect for referees.”How does a referee deal with a situation when he’s got 13 yellow cards to dish out? Does he do it early or does he allow the game to descend into anarchy? “Responsibility, respect, and self-discipline are the core issues and the clubs should be looking at those.”
