Javier Hernandez scores the opening goal
Hernandez has now scored nine league goals in eight league starts for United

By Chris Whyatt

League leaders Manchester United tightened their grip on the title race as they pushed aside lowly Wigan to move four points clear of Arsenal.

Relegation-threatened Wigan shone early on but Edwin van der Sar stood firm.Javier Hernandez cleverly clipped in rampant Nani’s cross after 17 minutes as the visitors gradually took control.Mexican striker Hernandez slotted a cool second 15 minutes from time before a Wayne Rooney tap-in and substitute Fabio’s simple shot added a late gloss.Sir Alex Ferguson’s team came into the match off the back of a disjointed goalless draw at Marseille, but added attacking cohesion to their characteristic defensive stubbornness against a Wigan team who did test them until the killer second goal from Hernandez. And the confident display sets them up well for Tuesday’s trip to Chelsea, with United now 15 points clear of the reigning champions.

Friday Focus – Carling Cup final preview

Arsene Wenger said Arsenal’s six-year trophy drought will not be a factor on Sunday when they face Birmingham City in the Carling Cup final.

The Gunners’ last trophy was the 2005 FA Cup and victory at Wembley would be the first leg of a possible quadruple.”What is important is not what happened in the last five years, but what we can do now,” said the Arsenal manager.”Success at Wembley can help us to have more confidence for the other trophies that we go for.”Arsenal are second in the Premier League, are in the FA Cup fifth round where they have a home replay against Leyton Orient on Wednesday and they lead Barcelona 2-1 going into the second leg of their last 16 Champions League tie at the Nou Camp on 8 March. They have been defeated only once in 17 matches in all competitions.

Glazers deny Man United sale as strong figures revealed

The Glazer family has again denied rumours of a plan to sell Manchester United to Qatar, as the football club revealed strong merchandise sales.”No discussions have taken place, Manchester United is not for sale and the owners will not entertain any offers,” said the publicly listed firm. The new results showed revenues of £156m for the six months to December, up 8% on a year earlier.Commercial sales of £50m were up 30%, despite calls to boycott merchandise. However, matchday turnover actually fell marginally, down 0.4% to £52.4m, according to the Premier League club’s preliminary financial results.

Green and gold

A campaign by some fans has sought to discourage spending on the club’s commercial offerings in protest at the Glazers’ ownership.Instead, protesting fans have been sporting the green and gold colours of Manchester United’s predecessor, Newton Heath.A report by business analysts Sport+Markt had claimed that sales were down 10%, but the club claimed this was only true of its stadium megastore, and reflected the lower number of home games played so far this season. But while the movement may have had some impact on local supporters, the company’s results suggested that spending by the club’s mostly international fanbase had nonetheless risen steadily.”The report represents an area of the world [in the vicinity of the club’s stadium] which only contains one in 14 of our 333 million global fans,” said commercial director Richard Arnold ahead of the results’ release.

Debts down

Meanwhile, the football club’s balance sheet – a sore point for many fans since the Glazers’ debt-financed takeover – was somewhat healthier.Gross debts fell and rising cash balances rose, meaning that the club’s net debt position – the difference between the two – fell 9% over the year, to £355m.The Glazers’ insistence that they remain committed to their long-term ownership of the club follows a similarly robust statement three months ago that failed to quash rumours of a possible sale.

Rory McArdle holds off Hearts' Stephen Elliott
McArdle suffered a head blow during the first half

By Clive Lindsay

Aberdeen and Hearts cancelled each other out as both were denied a third Scottish Premier League win in a row in an entertaining game at Pittodrie.

Hearts had Marian Kello to thank for a point, the goalkeeper saving superbly from Sone Aluko then denying Rory McArdle and Chris Maguire.Rudi Skacel tested Aberdeen goalkeeper Jamie Langfield after the break. But Aberdeen were the more fluent side with Ryan Jack missed a good chance and Nick Blackman had a fine effort saved. However, the home side were unable to force what would have been their first run of three successive league victories since December 2008.
