Craig Whyte still keen on Rangers takeover

By Alasdair Lamont

Craig Whyte
Whyte began negotiations with Sir David Murray in November

Craig Whyte remains keen on completing a proposed takeover of Rangers – despite frustrations that previously targeted dates have come and gone.

Whyte had initially expressed a desire to do a deal by Christmas and then, when that failed to materialise, before the end of January was mooted. The absence of a formal offer has led to speculation Whyte’s interest had come to nothing. But BBC Scotland understands he hopes to finally take over by mid-March.Millionaire Whyte, who was raised in Motherwell and is a lifelong Rangers fan, began negotiations with current owner Sir David Murray in mid-November.It was said at the time that, should the proposed offer be accepted, a payment of about £27m would be made to Lloyds Bank to clear the club’s debt.In addition, £5.5m would be offered to shareholders, of whom Murray, who paid £6m for his controlling interest in 1988, is the principal figure.Rangers chairman Alastair Johnston, following his own meeting with the potential buyer in December, appeared to conclude that Whyte’s proposal was more credible than the previous interest of Andrew Ellis.Ellis is involved with the latest bid but will not put any money in up front, although he will have a 25% stake in the shareholding bought by Whyte should the takeover succeed.Despite Whyte remaining hopeful of a successful takeover, Rangers manager Walter Smith’s hopes of a cash injection ahead of the closure of the January transfer window were dashed.Continued financial restrictions under the present regime meant that Smith had to make do with loan signings and free agents.

Police warn Rangers & Celtic fans over smoke bombs ahead of Scottish Cup match

Feb 4 2011

SPECIALLY trained sniffer dogs are to be deployed at Ibrox Stadium on Sunday to search fans for smoke bombs and flares before the Scottish Cup clash between Rangers and Celtic.Police in Glasgow have warned fans they face arrest if found in possession of the devices after a recent spate of offences during matches.Officers say that, as well as posing a risk to safety, it is also illegal to attempt to enter a sporting ground in possession of a flare or a smoke bomb during the designated period of a match.Ground regulations of the SFA, SFL and SPL also make it an offence to be in possession of devices.Ahead of Sunday’s fifth round tie between the Old Firm rivals, Chief Superintendent Andy Bates, said: “Over recent weeks, Strathclyde Police has seen more of these flares and smoke bombs set off at football matches. “They represent a significant risk to the safety of those attending the match which is why the law regarding them clearly states that possession of these articles while trying to enter or within the stadium is an offence.”This weekend, we will have trained police dogs inside and outside of Ibrox Stadium. Anyone found in possession of a flare or a smoke bomb will be arrested.”My message is absolutely clear – there is no place for smoke bombs or flares at stadiums and football matches.”Derek Kirkwood, Head of Security Operations, Scottish FA added: “Traditionally, Scotland has not had a culture of flares and smoke bombs being set-off in football stadiums. Unfortunately, in recent months the use of them has become more prevalent.”

Police want to trace this man over violence after Barnsley v Hull game in October

Published on Thu Feb 03 07:54:15 GMT 2011

POLICE are trying to identify and trace these six men – all wanted over violence which flared after a football match last October.

Yobs smashed up a Barnsley working men’s club and brawled on a town centre street after Barnsley played Hull City.Trouble first broke out in Harborough Hill Working Men’s Club, Shaw Lane, Barnsley, before the game kicked off.Thousands of pounds worth of damage was caused to the club, which had been designed for away fans. After the 1-1 draw a large number of fans then clashed on Regents Street.Police have issued photos of six men they want to trace. Officers believe several Hull fans travelled to South Yorkshire intent on causing mayhem.Last month South Yorkshire Police arrested eight youths – aged 15 to 17 – in connection with the trouble.Officers travelled to Hull to apprehend the suspects in a series of dawn raids. All eight were arrested on suspicion of violent disorder. The arrests were ordered before Barnsley FC travelled to Hull for the return match, in the hope it would send out a strong message that police are taking the violence seriously and do not want a repeat of any trouble. Before the return fixture police in Hull warned fans intent on fighting or retribution to stay away from the town.
