Spendendo l’ importante cifra di circa 23 milioni di sterline e raddoppiando l’ offerta iniziale guidicata dall’ Ajax come offensiva, il Liverpool ha fatto felici i propri tifosi ( foto ) acquistando il centravanti Suarez. La somma sborsata  è di poco inferiore a quella che il Man City ha pagato per Dzeko che resta la firma, al momento, più onerosa del mercato invernale. In Scozia i Rangers sembrano vicini al centravanti della nazionale nordirlandese Healy. Nelle coppe nazionali, sia in Inghilterra che in Scozia, risultati abbastanza prevedibili ma parecchie gare vibranti come quella tra Birmingham e Coventry.

Liverpool have agreed a fee to sign Uruguayan striker Luis Suarez from Dutch club Ajax for £23m.

The deal for the 24-year-old striker is subject to Suarez passing a medical and agreeing personal terms with the Premier League club.Liverpool initially bid £12.7m for Suarez, but Ajax told them to come back with a more “respectful” offer.That led to Liverpool almost doubling their offer to tempt the Dutch giants to sell the forward.Clubs usually have to pay a premium to sign players during the January transfer window – Bosnia striker Edin Dzeko reportedly cost Manchester City £27m earlier this month – and Ajax will make a £16.6m profit on a player they bought from Groningen for £6.4m in 2007.

Healy is Northern Ireland’s all-time top scorer with 35 goals

Rangers are in advanced discussions with a view to bringing Sunderland striker David Healy to Ibrox on a six-month loan, BBC Scotland has learned.

Healy, who joined the Black Cats in 2008, was recently sent on loan to Doncaster Rovers.Manager Walter Smith is looking for a new striker after top scorer Kenny Miller left Rangers to join Bursaspor.But Smith missed out on Kris Commons, who elected to join Celtic instead after leaving Derby County.Capped 84 times for Northern Ireland, Healy has represented 11 English clubs since starting his career at Manchester United.His two most fruitful club spells were with Preston North End and Leeds United, scoring over 30 goals for each club.

Does one tracksuit a yob make?

Poor tracksuits don’t know if they’re coming or going. Last spring they were filling the international catwalks and starring in every fashion glossy you care to mention, touted as the must-have every stylish girl couldn’t be seen without. One year on, they have been relegated to the back of the wardrobe and have regressed to their prior status as emblematic of everything that’s wrong with the youth of today.

News that one branch of McDonalds has implemented a zero tolerance policy banning under-18s wearing tracksuits after 7pm is the hammer blow to the much maligned garment – when you’re turned away from McDonalds, you’ve really had your chips, so to speak.Staff at the branch in Leyland, Lancs are apparently so routinely threatened by knifey types in baggy leisurewear, that the level-headed, logical, next step was to get right to the heart of the problem and re-examine their dress code.But how to implement such a code? How can McDonalds’ frontline staff (not generally known for their fashion credentials it’s fair to say), be expected to differentiate a threatening tracksuit from a non-confrontational one when they come in so many guises?There’s the straight up ‘hoodie’, usually in grey marl sweats head-to-toe, oft complemented by a pair of Reebok Classics (the pub trainer); the tradesman, who tends to team a paint/plaster splattered tracksuit bottom with a football top, T-shirt or polo shirt; the sportsman who comes straight from the field of conflict – identifiable by shin-pads and a sweaty sheen, and finally the retro fashion poseur who favours an Adidas Originals three-stripe tracksuit à la Madonna and Gwen Stefani.McDonalds are clearly trying to focus on identifying and banning the ‘hoodie’, but when staff have only got the time it takes to say “Big Mac meal” to process all the permutations and make a judgement call, they can end up banning honest joinery students like poor Scott Wilson who was forced to return home and change into a suit and tie in order to get served (really Scott…?).Introducing blanket dress codes of this nature leads to the same problem faced in nightclub queues up and down the country every Saturday night – there’s no room for artistic interpretation. Never mind that you look like you got dressed in the dark in a Burton changing room, so long as your shirt is tucked-in and you’re not wearing trainers, you’re good to go.McDonalds just need to be more honest about their motives and stop hiding behind fashion in order to make judgments about a customer’s likelihood of concealing a weapon. After all, a straw poll of McDonald’s core customer would likely reveal a tracksuit to be their garment of choice. Better then, not to bite the hand that feeds you.
