Wolves beat Liverpool for the first time in 27 years to climb off the foot of the Premier League table and pile pressure on Reds manager Roy Hodgson.

Stephen Ward’s crisp finish from Sylvan Ebanks-Blake’s pass 11 minutes into the second half proved enough to give Mick McCarthy’s men a famous victory.Raul Meireles wasted a dismal Liverpool’s best chance early on when he shot straight Wayne Hennessey.And Martin Skrtel’s late headed goal was rightly ruled out for offside.

Relieved Chelsea halted their worst run of form since 1999 as a stuttering victory over Bolton gave the champions a first league win in seven matches.

Carlo Ancelotti’s out-of-sorts team struggled to hit the target in the first half as Bolton threatened with Matthew Taylor lashing just wide.But they marginally improved after the break as Didier Drogba hit the post.And Stamford Bridge erupted with joy as Florent Malouda slotted in a cross from Drogba, who had stayed just onside.Battling Bolton disputed the goal, claiming Drogba was offside, but the Ivorian appeared to have timed his angled run across the visitors back line to perfection to race onto a fine Michael Essien pass and ensure Chelsea moved back into fourth place in the Premier League.Much soul searching is going on at the west London club who, just seven weeks ago, were five points clear at the top of the table and playing with the verve with which they won the title last season.Yet another seriously under-par performance is unlikely to provide any any real answers to their remarkable plummet in form – but it proves they can churn out a much-needed result.

Wigan 2 – 2 Arsenal

A late own goal by Sebastien Squillaci salvaged a draw for 10-man Wigan which moved them out of the relegation zone and stopped Arsenal going joint top.

Wigan went ahead when Charles N’Zogbia was tripped by Laurent Koscielny in the box and Ben Watson scored the penalty.Andrey Arshavin equalised with a superb volley into the corner before Nicklas Bendtner coolly fired Arsenal in front.Wigan had N’Zogbia sent off late on but Squillaci’s headed into his own net to give the home side a deserved point.After beating champions Chelsea 3-1 on Boxing Day, Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger made eight changes to his starting XI in an effort to freshen things up, with games against Birmingham and Manchester City to come in the next seven days.

Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini has admitted that Mario Balotelli is homesick but played down reports that the Italian striker wants to leave.

Balotelli scored a hat-trick as City defeated Aston Villa 4-0 on Tuesday to stay firmly in the hunt for the title.Mancini said: “Maybe he is homesick but I don’t think it’s a long-term problem. He is 20, has left his family for the first time – it’s normal to miss them.”

Wednesday’s Scottish Premier League game between St Johnstone and Rangers at McDiarmid Park has been postponed because of weather conditions.

Despite the requirement for undersoil heating, the SPL suffered two postponements on Sunday.And there was due to be a full card of six games on Wednesday.Hamilton will hold a 0815 GMT pitch inspection on Wednesday morning ahead of their game, which is due to kick off at 1500 against Aberdeen.Accies are yet to play in December after Arctic conditions swept Scotland, with two matches at New Douglas Park already falling victim to the weather.
