England 1-2 France

Karim Benzema celebrates scoring for France
Benzema wheels away after opening the scoring for France at Wembley

England were comprehensively outplayed by France as they slipped to defeat in their friendly at Wembley.

An impressive France went ahead when Karim Benzema played a one-two with Florent Malouda and fired into the net. They went 2-0 up when Mathieu Valbuena converted Bacary Sagna’s cross, while Samir Nasri hammered against the post.England grabbed a consolation when Peter Crouch – only just on as a sub – superbly volleyed in Ashley Young’s corner but it was too little, too late.

Rory Patterson grabbed a draw for Northern Ireland against Morocco with an 86th-minute penalty at Windsor Park.

Nigel Worthington’s side looked to be heading for defeat when defender Rachid Soulaimani was adjudged to have hauled down Josh McQuoid in the goalmouth.Morocco had been gifted the lead in the 55th minute by a mistake by substitute goalkeeper Alan Blayney.Arsenal’s Marouane Chamakh scored when Blayney’s attempted clearance rebounded off the Moroccan and into the net.The late equaliser should give manager Nigel Worthington reason for optimism after what seemed like being a disappointing night.

Fabio Capello urges England fans to be patient

INTERNATIONAL FRIENDLY: ENGLAND v FRANCE
Venue: Wembley Stadium Date: Wednesday, 17 November Kick-off: 2000 GMT
Coverage details: Live commentary on BBC Radio 5 live; live text commentary and full reports on BBC Sport website & mobiles; live on ITV1 from 1930 GMT

Manager Fabio Capello wants fans to be patient with England’s youngsters in Wednesday’s friendly against France.

Andy Carroll, 21, and Jordan Henderson, 20, will make their debut while Kieran Gibbs, 21, is set for his first start.”I hope the performance of these young players will be really good, but the fans must understand that we could burn these players if it is not,” he said.”We have to help them. Playing in front of 90,000 fans at Wembley, it is not the same as playing for the under-21s.”The Italian added: “The value of this game is different. They need time to improve, to play confidently and without fear.”Capello is eager to blood new players but feels the trio of Newcastle striker Carroll, Sunderland midfielder Henderson and Arsenal defender Gibbs must be surrounded by experience. He pointed to Germany as an example of what can be achieved, and in doing so referred to a team who knocked England out of the World Cup with a painful 4-1 defeat in their last-16 match.

Joachim Low’s side eventually came third in South Africa as their group of largely unknown youngsters captured the imagination with a succession of brilliant performances.”Germany built their team step by step. If we want that, we must put them in two, three at a time, not five or six,” added Capello.Former Real Madrid and Juventus manager Capello now hopes to develop a team of fresh talent in time for the European Championships in 2012, but he has warned that the transition is not always smooth.”When I have done this with my club team some played very well immediately, others needed more time,” he said.”But the value of these players is really big. We have to help them.”Jack Wilshere would have been involved in the match had the 18-year-old not been forced to head back to Arsenal for treatment on an injury he picked up in Sunday’s win at Everton.Opposing coach Laurent Blanc has recalled Barcelona defender Eric Abidal for the match against England, as France seek to maintain the momentum they have built since their own disastrous World Cup.Abidal was one of five players summoned by the French Football Federation to explain unrest in South Africa after their entire squad threatened to go on strike over the expulsion of Nicolas Anelka.Though Abidal escaped without sanction and has been recalled, other players such as Manchester United’s Patrice Evra and Chelsea striker Anelka are still serving suspensions.France lost their first Euro 2012 qualifier, but have since climbed to the top of their qualifying group by winning their last three matches without conceding a goal.

Five Premier League players are in Blanc’s 22-man squad – Arsenal’s right-back Bacary Sagna, left-back Gael Clichy, midfielder Samir Nasri, along with Chelsea forward Florent Malouda and Tottenham defender Younes Kaboul.Though Malouda admits 1998 World Cup winners France still have a long way to go before they can recapture former glories, he believes they are on the right track.”We had bad times recently but right now we are in a good position,” he said.”We have to appreciate that. But we know it is not enough for us to be a big nation again. We are not in the top 10. Our aim is to get back there and then maybe win something.”Manchester City defender Micah Richards could also start for England if Everton’s Phil Jagielka does not recover from the virus that prevented him from training on Tuesday.England’s first-choice goalkeeper, Manchester City’s Joe Hart, may not be able to play after injuring his back in training.Birmingham’s Ben Foster stands by for a first international start in 12 months.
