Chelsea maintained their 100% record in this season’s Champions League with a clinical win over Spartak Moscow that secured their progress from Group F.

An even first half was notable mostly for an awful miss by Chelsea’s Alex.But the hosts impressed in the second half, sparked by Nicolas Anelka’s fine rising finish before Didier Drogba earned and fired home a penalty.Branislav Ivanovic then headed a third and slammed home a fourth, either side of Nikita Bazhenov’s late consolation.

Security tight for Liverpool v Napoli Europa League tie

Merseyside Police are working closely with Italian police in a bid to stop a repeat of trouble which flared before Napoli played Liverpool in Italy.Reds supporters were stabbed, chased and threatened ahead of the Europa League tie 12 days go.There are fears some hardcore Napoli Ultras will be among the thousands of fans travelling to Anfield for Thursday’s game.Internet sites have suggested some Liverpool fans may look for revenge.

‘Genuine fans’

But Ch Supt Dave Lewis from the Merseyside Police football intelligence unit said he doubted that would happen.”I don’t expect the people who were involved in what happened in Naples to be coming over to Liverpool,” he said.”I really don’t believe that they were genuine football supporters.”We will have some fervent individuals who were following Napoli to be coming over here for Thursday night’s game but that doesn’t mean they are going to be trouble causers.”

Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp almost ran out of superlatives to describe Gareth Bale’s performance in the 3-1 Champions League win over Inter Milan.

Redknapp saw the 21-year-old, who scored a hat-trick as Spurs lost 4-3 to Inter in October, produce two assists.”Maicon is rated as the best right-back in the world and what he’s done to him in the two games is amazing,” he said.”He can cross, his left foot is great on the run, he can shoot, dribble, head it, he’s got everything.”Welshman Bale stole the headlines in the previous match between the sides, even though Tottenham lost the match at reigning champions Inter.This time the left-sided midfielder produced another stunning performance that helped put Spurs top of Group A – above the Italian side on goal difference.Bale may not have scored at White Hart Lane but he was in outstanding form and might have enjoyed a hat-trick of assists had Peter Crouch not volleyed wide in the first half.
