Newcastle 5 1 Sunderland

Shola Ameobi scores the fourth for Newcastle
It was a sublime finish by Ameobi for the fourth goal

By Saj Chowdhury

Kevin Nolan scored a hat-trick as Newcastle thrashed 10-man Sunderland in the Tyne-Wear derby.

Nolan opened the scoring with an overhead flick before tapping in a second from Andy Carroll’s effort.Shola Ameobi added a third from the spot after Nedum Onuoha had tripped Jonas Gutierrez before Titus Bramble was sent off for bringing down Carroll.Ameobi then volleyed in his second and Nolan headed in his third before Darren Bent smashed in a late consolation. And that is all it was – a consolation. Sunderland were second best, but what will hurt them more is they were a clear second best at the ground of their arch-rivals.

606: DEBATE

Newcastle’s formula was simple – get the ball wide and deliver into the big men. These big men were Carroll and Ameobi, 6ft-plus players who are both good in the air and nimble on the deck. They gave Sunderland an almighty workout with Nolan reaping the rewards from their good work in the first half. The effervescent midfielder may lack pace but more than makes up for it with guile and cunning in the box.The former Bolton man’s first strike came from an Ameobi nod-down from Barton’s corner. With his back to goal, Nolan flicked the ball over his head and past the reach of goalkeeper Simon Mignolet and the three defenders on the line. His second came after good work from Ameobi who drove forward before finding Gutierrez.

Hughton hails ‘special’ derby win

The Argentine’s strike was blocked but the ball fell to Carroll whose scissor-kick arrived at the feet of Nolan around the six-yard area, who calmly slotted in.Despite carrying a two-goal lead Newcastle looked leggy at the back against a pacy Sunderland attack containing Danny Welbeck and Bent, who were joined at 2-0 by Asamoah Gyan. And early on, Welbeck did test the backline when he broke from a Newcastle corner but was brilliantly tackled by full-back Danny Simpson just as he was about to strike. The Black Cats actually looked better after the break but by then they were 3-0 down following Ameobi’s penalty before the break and Bramble’s sending-off.The latter could be judged as unfortunate as card-happy Phil Dowd, who showed nine yellows and a red, was eager to give the former Magpie his marching orders after he chopped down Carroll who was approaching the area from a wide position.Sunderland’s horrific Halloween was not over, as Simpson delivered a looping ball from the right for Carroll to crash on to the bar with his head.Ameobi was first to the loose ball and smashed in the rebound – it was a goal similar in vein to the one Alan Shearer scored in the 1996 5-0 win over Manchester United, when he followed up Les Ferdinand’s effort.Nolan, who looked a little bit peeved when Ameobi took the penalty, finally grabbed his hat-trick when a corner swung from the right was headed on by Ameobi and flicked in by the midfielder.

Sunderland ‘horror show’ angers Bruce

Bent scored a late goal when he volleyed in from a corner, but he celebrated his strike with barely a smile.Chris Hughton’s job as Newcastle manager was reported to be under pressure earlier in the week before the club released a statement stating they would discuss terms of a new deal with him. After that performance, a new contract is surely a no-brainer.

Police hail Tyne-Wear derby success

Fans at Tyne Wear derby Police mounted a major operation in Newcastle

Police said an operation to prevent trouble at the first Tyne Wear derby for two years was a “great success”.Northumbria Police officers arrested 21 people, including seven for failure to comply with football banning orders.About 700 officers, 30 mounted police and 30 police dog handlers were on duty to keep rival supporters apart at Sunday’s game at St James’ Park. The match ended in a 5-1 victory for Newcastle, with captain Kevin Nolan scoring a hat-trick.Violence has flared in the past and Northumbria Police warned of “firm action” against troublemakers.

Free coaches were laid on to ferry Sunderland supporters to the game.Newcastle took a five-goal lead, with three from Nolan and two from Shola Ameobi, before Darren Bent added a late consolation goal for Sunderland.Ch Supt Graham Smith said: “Today has been a great success.”A total of 14 people were arrested during and after the game for a variety of offences including public order, criminal damage and streaking.”Of the 14 arrests, 12 were at the ground, and two were in Clayton Street. A further seven arrests were made prior to kick-off for failure to comply with banning orders.”All in all a very successful day and I would like to say thank you to the fans for playing their part in a good and enjoyable fixture.”It was noisy and passionate, but most fans were well-behaved.”The key was to get the planning right, which we did on this occasion.”

Aston Villa and Birmingham players battle for possession
Birmingham extended Villa’s winless streak in the league to four games

BBC Sport at Villa Park

Aston Villa and Birmingham City shared the points after they fought out a dour midlands derby deadlock at Villa Park.

Gerard Houllier had set his sights on victory in his first confrontation with arch-rivals Birmingham since his appointment as Villa boss – and saw his side waste the best of the chances in an encounter that was high on endeavour but desperately lacking in serious quality.Ciaran Clark almost grabbed a late winner for Villa when his close-range header was only inches wide, and Ashley Young came even closer seconds later when he hit the woodwork with City keeper Ben Foster beaten.

Major events ‘help police prepare for Birmingham derby’

Aston Villa's Emile Heskey and Birmingham City's Roger Johnson The game at Villa Park ended goalless

Police handling the football derby game between Aston Villa and Birmingham City said managing other big events recently would stand them in good stead. The West Midlands force policed the visit of Pope Benedict XVI to the city and the Conservative Party conference. The force increased the number of officers for a Sunday because of the match at Villa Park, which ended 0-0.There has been trouble around previous Birmingham derbies and police said experience taught them to be vigilant. They said there was a need for extra resources before, during and after the Premier League match.Ch Supt Surjeet Manku, match day commander, said: “When we’re looking at after the game, I’ve got resources that can respond essentially anywhere in Birmingham.”But our focus will be around the city centre.”He said anyone arrested for football-related matters would be subject to applications for football banning orders, which would prevent them from attending future fixtures.Ch Supt Manku added: “It does put extra demands on our resources.”But we have got the capability and the skills to manage these type of events.”After Aston Villa beat Birmingham City 5-1 in April 2008, a 26-year-old Villa fan was killed after a car was deliberately driven at him. The driver of the car was jailed for life the following year.On Saturday the clubs were paired together in the quarter-finals of the Carling Cup.The tie at St Andrew’s will be played in the week starting 29 November. Villa were beaten 2-1 by Manchester United in last season’s final at Wembley.

Storia e contemporaneità della cultura Casual d’Oltre Manica.. Approfondimenti sui fatti dell’ultimo decennio.
