Blackburn Rovers close to takeover deal

Blackburn lost 2-1 to Liverpool on Sunday
Blackburn lost 2-1 to Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday

Blackburn say a takeover by the Venky’s group, which would make Rovers the first Indian-owned Premier League club, is set to be completed in November.

The group, which specialises in poultry farming and pharmaceuticals, has held several meetings with Rovers and the Premier League.Rovers chairman John Williams said both parties were “hopeful” the deal would be completed in November. The club said detailed discussions had taken place with the Indian group.Williams said there had been an extensive period of due diligence, where the club’s finances are studied. In a statement on the Blackburn website, Venky’s chairperson Anuradha J Desai said: “We expect to be the first Indian company to acquire a Premier League team.”We are particularly delighted that the team is Blackburn Rovers, with whom we believe we have many shared values and ambitions.“According to its website Venky’s, formerly known as Western Hatcheries Ltd, was established in 1976, mainly to produce chicks for the poultry markets of north India. It is a VH Group company that has diversified into manufacturing nutritional health products for humans, pet food and other healthcare products. The VH Group was founded in 1971 and is based in the western state of Maharashtra. Its flagship company is Venkateshwara Hatcheries, which it says was transformed from “a backyard activity into an organised, promising industry, ranking amongst the best in the world”.

606: DEBATE

Speaking last week, Blackburn boss Sam Allardyce welcomed the prospect of a sale and new investment in the team.”Investment is needed at every football club and investment here has dried up somewhat because of the club being up for sale,” he said.”We have a strong base at Rovers, a very good club which is run and managed very professionally indeed. Blackburn Rovers has a strong history and it could have a bright future, given the right sort of investment.”Blackburn are 17th, one place above the relegation places although only three points away from seventh, in a compressed Premier League with nine points from nine games. In August, Blackburn said they held a “cordial and productive meeting” with Indian businessman Ahsan Ali Syed’s company over a proposed takeover.Bahrain-based Syed, owner of Western Gulf Advisory, said he was keen to buy the Lancashire club and would give Allardyce a transfer kitty of £100m.However, a BBC Radio 5 live investigation revealed he had left a trail of unpaid debt in the UK.

Disabled man stranded in Liverpool home after Blackburn fans trash car

McGarrity

A DISABLED man was left housebound after football fan thugs trashed his car in a post-match rampage.Furious Blackburn Rovers supporters, smarting from a 2-1 defeat at the hands of the Liverpool FC, set about Steven McGarrity’s small red car by jumping on the roof and bonnet, smashing the windscreen and damaging every panel with kicks and scrapes.Mr McGarrity, 39, was sitting down to dinner with wife Susan, 46, at their home on Walton Breck Road, Anfield, when the pair witnessed the vandalism from about half a dozen fans dressed in the blue and white of Blackburn.Mr McGarrity, who suffers from arthritis, osteoporosis, diabetes and depression, said: “They’ve smashed the windscreen, kicked all the panels – just smashed it up.“One of them jumped on the roof, one went on the bonnet, so now there’s dents all over those, and I can’t drive the car because the windscreen is smashed.“I can’t afford to replace it either, so we’re stuck in the house now.”The five-door, 1998 registered Daihatsu Move, bought by Mr McGarrity last year for £500, was parked on the street outside his house as normal. He said he has never had any trouble in the past with football fans. One of his theories is that the colour of the car, a reddish pink, enraged the travelling fans who had just seen their team lose to the red-shirted Liverpool. The vandalism only lasted a couple of minutes, during which Mr and Mrs McGarrity shouted to the yobs to stop with little effect.Merseyside Police were called and are investigating the incident.

Gemmell: Rangers still deserved to win Old Firm clash – but referee blundered under pressure

Willie Collum Image 2

Lisbon Lion Tommy Gemmell says Willie Collum buckled under the pressure of refereeing his first Old Firm game. But he also insisted Celtic can have no complaints about their 3-1 defeat on Sunday.Gemmell said he was bemused by two of the ref’s decisions – giving Rangers a penalty when Kirk Broadwood went down after a challenge by Daniel Majstorovic and not handing Lee McCulloch a second yellow for fouling Georgios Samaras. But Gemmell stated not even that could hide the fact Celtic were second best in every department. He said: “I don’t think there was any doubt that Rangers deserved to win the game.”But it was definitely not a penalty for their third goal because there was no contact from Majstorovic.“It was a big call all right by Collum because that decision killed off any chance of a comeback.”He definitely felt the pressure and it showed in some of his decisions.”McCulloch was a wee bit nasty two or three times, he had a few bad tackles and was lucky to stay on the park for his foul on Samaras.”And I can’t understand why Steven Naismith was not even booked when you look at the string of fouls he committed.”But over the piece Rangers were the better side.”They were so competitive, in there to win every ball no matter what.”

Willie Collum, the referee in charge of Sunday’s controversial Old Firm derby at Parkhead, received a number of threatening phone calls following the match, the Scottish Football Association have confirmed.

The 31-year-old (pictured) made his debut in the fixture and was criticised by Celtic manager Neil Lennon for awarding Rangers a penalty in the second half of the 3-1 win for the visitors. The official reportedly answered a number of phone-calls at his Lanarkshire home with the caller threatening to “go after him and his wife and children“.It is understood that Collum reported the calls to the police but turned down the offer of protection outside his home.SFA spokesman Darryl Broadfoot told the Daily Record: “Willie received a number of threatening calls at his home on Sunday night, one of which was taken by his wife.”This kind of behaviour is abhorrent and has no place in football.”The incident can only de-motivate further the several top officials who are believed to be considering their futures due to the intense scrutiny they are being placed under.Assistant referee Steven Craven resigned on Monday after being caught up in a furore over a decision to deny Celtic a penalty at Dundee United last week.
