Hammers contact Spurs over Olympic Stadium

October 2, 2010

ESPNsoccernet can reveal that Hammers officials are to make contact with Spurs this weekend to see whether they are serious about relocating to the 80,000-capacity stadium in Stratford.

West Ham were stunned when Spurs provided unexpected competition by entering a bid in conjunction with AEG, the US operators of the O2 Arena, on the deadline for applications for the Olympic Stadium.Since then, the Hammers have been trying to contact their London rivals, and the possibility might be to become partners rather than rivals. A West Ham insider told ESPNsoccernet: “In reality, we wouldn’t rule out sharing the Olympic stadium, but we cannot be sure Tottenham are serious as they have also sought planning consent for a new stadium in Harringey, so it might just be a back-up option.”Charlton temporarily ‘shared’ Upton Park at one time and the source added: “There is a precedent as far as West Ham United are concerned about ground sharing, so it would be something we would think about again.”Former Tottenham chairman Lord Alan Sugar has told ESPNsoccernet that he believes it makes more sense for Spurs to move to the Olympic Stadium rather than risk massive debt by spending huge money on a new stadium in Harringey. The former Spurs chairman is “confused” about why Spurs have bid for the Olympic Stadium if they have pursued and obtained planning consent to build a new stadium in North London, but he feels the East London stadium represents the more sensible financial solution.”I am confused why Spurs are pursuing both options,” he said. “I’m confused because I am not sure which one they really want.”Personally it makes more financial sense moving to the Olympic Stadium than building your own stadium and finding something like £400 million when you’d rather spend your money on new players.”Of course Spurs haven’t got that kind of money and would need to borrow it, and you end up with the same sort of problems you found at Manchester Untied and Liverpool, where clubs pay so much interest on their loans it can only come from the coffers of the football club.”Renting a stadium from the council makes sense, as Manchester City have done, and it has worked for them. However, Spurs fans would ideally want to keep their club in North London if at all possible.”It would also be interesting to find out from our friends at West Ham what they think about Spurs applying for the Olympic Stadium when they have also done so, and it makes more sense from them from an emotional and location point of view.”Sugar speaks as a Spurs fan, but his Apprentice co-star Karren Brady is part of the board at West Ham.

Sullivan see`s West Ham fans as common yobs

The joint West Ham chairman David Sullivan, has stated that if Spurs were to move to the Olympic stadium it would cause ‘ civil unrest and riots in the streets`. Now surely this is basically calling for riots if he doesn`t get his way and basically stating that West Ham fans are no more than idiotic thugs with sweet FA else to do with their time. I mean, I imagine us moving into a stadium, which nobody has a given right to in the first place, is right up there with most people`s biggest worries along with un-employment, crime and immigration. How stupid does he think West Ham fans are that they would take to the street for him just to get what he wants? Obviously West Ham Fans wouldn`t be happy with the situation but the fact remains a lot are happy at their current home and are just as upset as us for being linked with the new Football/athletics stadium. The fact Sullivan openly states he expects West Ham fans to resort to violence is disrespectful to everyone involved. But the biggest thing I have against Sullivan is that the more he goes on, the more appealing this Olympic stadium becomes to me. Although 90% of Spurs fans hate the idea of moving to Stratford, the idea of getting one over on this jumped up little ***** is really starting to appeal to me. The fact that he is so annoying that I would genuinely consider such a terrible move really is a testament to his ability to rile people. The thing is, the only real card Sullivan has got is us Spurs fans being so against the move. If we really wanted the Olympic stadium who do you think the government would give it to? The Club you can easily fill it every week who already have 23,500 season ticket holders plus another 35,000 on the waiting list. Or the team who are still selling theirs at a cut price? The Club who can afford to spend £200mil on the ground to re-brand it as a world class football stadium, or a club who will basically move in and leave the running track as an un-used baron wasteland? A club who will be entertaining the likes of Barcelona and Inter Milan at home, or a club who will be playing Scunthorpe and Doncaster at home very soon? This isn`t a dig at West Ham (or at least it didn`t start like that) but they are a club with an estimated 400,000 fans word wide to our 17,000,000. That means they will have to have nearly 20% of ALL their fans turn up week in, week out to fill a ground that size not to mention the fact that we have the finances to easily maintain a stadium of that size and stature. So my advice to you Mr. Sullivan is to shut it before you end up making the prospect of a move to the Olympic stadium a not too bad one after all. Because if Levy gets us on side and sniffs out a way of saving himself £200mil in the process, you won`t have a leg to stand on!

An appearance against Italy would fulfil a boyhood dream for Northern Ireland midfielder Corry Evans

Northern Ireland midfielder Corry Evans can’t wait to take on Italy in Friday’s Euro 2012 qualifier at Windsor Park.

The 20-year-old Manchester United player was the Northern Ireland hero in their Group C opener, with his goal securing a 1-0 victory in Slovenia.”It’s been a dream to play against the top nations and Italy are certainly one of them,” said Evans.”You just want to test yourself against the top players and hopefully we can rattle them a bit at Windsor Park.”Evans, the younger brother of NI and Manchester United team-mate Jonny, scored with his first touch against Slovenia after coming on as a second-half substitute. It will be a special moment if he makes his first appearance for the senior team at the south Belfast venue.”I have been dreaming about it since I was a kid,” added Evans.

Northern Ireland seem to have another gear in front of their fans.

Giorgio Chiellini

“I’ve played there once for the U19s and there wasn’t many people there.”I’m really looking forward to the atmosphere and crowd at Windsor on Friday.”The Italians top Group C with two wins from two matches while Nigel Worthington’s side lies third but they have a game in hand on the 2006 World Cup winners.Northern Ireland have caused a few surprises at Windsor Park in the past five years, beating the likes of Spain and England.Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini expects a tough test on Friday night.”They are more dangerous when playing at home – Northern Ireland seem to have another gear in front of their fans,” said the Juventus player.”They narrowly missed out on Euro 2008 and this year’s World Cup. We will have to be ready for a sporting battle.”
