Tottenham 1 4 Arsenal

Samir Nasri celebrates
Nasri celebrates tucking away the first of his two penalties at Spurs

By Jonathan Stevenson

Samir Nasri scored two penalties in extra time to help earn Arsenal victory over Tottenham in the Carling Cup.

Arsenal dominated the first half and took the lead when Jack Wilshere crossed for Henri Lansbury to slide in.Spurs improved after the break and Robbie Keane, a half-time sub, levelled when he slotted in from 18 yards. But Nasri scored when Sebastien Bassong tugged him back and again after Steven Caulker fouled Marouane Chamakh, with Andrey Arshavin firing in a fourth. The Spurs fans could barely believe how quickly the game disappeared from their grasp as the spot-kicks were both scored in the first six minutes of extra time, just when the hosts seemed to be in the ascendancy. They had fought hard to get back into the game after being run ragged by a fluent Arsenal side before the break, only for two moments of defensive weakness to cost them dearly. But the way the game began, it did not appear as though the visitors would need extra time to secure their place in the fourth round.Wenger, serving a one-match touchline ban from the stand after his reaction to Sunderland’s late leveller in the league at the weekend, picked a stronger XI than usual for this stage of the competition and the Gunners were comfortably the better of the teams. After Lansbury’s appeals for a penalty were waved away, he raced into the box to convert Wilshere’s cross from the left as Arsenal gained just reward for their fluent start.Spurs were having to settle for soaking up pressure and trying to hit Arsenal on the break, with David Bentley twice wasting decent openings and Roman Pavlyuchenko firing into the side-netting from 18 yards.Having laboured for most of the first half, Tottenham came out after the break with all guns blazing and the words of manager Harry Redknapp still ringing in their ears.Keane and Aaron Lennon were on in place of the ineffective Giovani dos Santos and Jake Livermore – and it took only four minutes for the new-look side to give the home fans something to shout about.Standing in a borderline offside decision, Keane was allowed to play on when he collected Kyle Naughton’s pass and by shooting early from 18 yards he seemed to take Lukasz Fabianki by surprise, the keeper only managing to push the ball into the corner of the net.Spurs were buoyed and seemed a different side, with Luarent Koscielny having to be alert to make strong challenges on Brazilian debutant Sandro and Lennon as they were about to shoot.Wenger sent on Marouane Chamakh and Arshavin to try and win it in normal time but it was Spurs who had the last opportunity in the 90 minutes, Keane deflecting a Bentley free-kick on to the post from two yards.Extra time was less than a minute old when White Hart Lane was silenced by Bassong’s foul on Nasri, the Frenchman coolly stepping up to send Stipe Pletikosa the wrong way.Minutes later it was like Groundhog Day as 18-year-old Caulker grabbed Chamakh’s arm inside the box and Nasri again sent Pletikosa the wrong way, the cue for hordes of Spurs fans to head for the exits. Those who left early missed Bentley heading against a post from six yards when it looked easier to score, before Arshavin fastened on to a quickly taken free-kick to drill in a fourth and end the scoring.

Newcastle players celebrate Ryan Taylor’s goal

By Phil Dawkes

An injury-time goal from Shola Ameobi gave Newcastle an extraordinary win at Chelsea in a see-saw Carling Cup third-round encounter.

Patrick van Aanholt fired Chelsea ahead before Nile Ranger’s volley and Ryan Taylor’s free-kick put United 2-1 up.Ameobi curled in Newcastle’s third but Nicolas Anelka reduced the deficit with a neat finish with 20 minutes to go.Anelka then levelled matters with a well-taken penalty, but Ameobi had the final word with a header from a corner.

Rangers 7 2 Dunfermline

Kyle Lafferty scores a goal for Rangers against Dunfermline
Lafferty opened his account for the season with a hat-trick

Kyle Lafferty’s hat-trick helped holders Rangers rout Dunfermline and reach the fourth round of the Co-operative Insurance Cup.

Strikes by Nikica Jelavic, Lafferty and Madjid Bougherra put Rangers in charge. But Callum Woods headed one back for the Pars before the break and Joe Cardle further reduced the deficit. But two more Lafferty strikes, one either side of Jelavic’s overhead kick, and Steven Naismith’s header ensured a comfortable victory for the hosts.Rangers gave defender Andy Webster his first start of the season and Kyle Hutton made his full debut in midfield while Nick Phinn and Alex Burke returned to the starting line-up for First Division leaders Dunfermline.Dunfermline made a bright start and were lively in possession but it was the home side who carved out the game’s first chance.Steven Davis, captaining Rangers in the absence of David Weir, played a one-two with Jelavic and tried to beat Chris Smith at his near post but the goalkeeper was equal to the shot. However, Rangers soon moved into the lead as Kirk Broadfoot crossed for Jelavic to stab home in the 21st minute.

Andrew Little and Joe Cardle
Andrew Little holds off Dunfermline scorer Cardl

Two minutes later, Lafferty burst into the box and held off the challenge of the Dunfermline defence before finding the net for the first time this season.Bougherra ventured forward to get on the end of Vladimir Weiss’s low cross and the Algerian defender finished well past Smith.Having played second fiddle for much of the match, the Pars ended the first half on a high as Woods met Willie Gibson’s corner with a header that neither Rangers stand-in goalkeeper Neil Alexander or Broadfoot couldGibson was also the architect of Dunfermline’s second, outpacing Broadfoot to cross for Cardle, who headed powerfully into the far corner a minute into the second period. But, almost instantly, Lafferty grabbed his second of the evening after collecting Naismith’s pass and side-footing past Smith.

Jelavic acrobatically converted Andrew Little’s cross to put Rangers further ahead just before the hour mark. And Lafferty completed his first ever Rangers treble with an impressive finish from 10 yards in the 71st minute.Naismith had scored as a substitute against Dundee United on Saturday and repeated the feet 13 minutes from the end when he got on the end of Broadfoot’s curling cross and headed back across goal to beat Smith.

Lee Bowyer issues apology to West Brom fan

Lee Bowyer is booked against West Brom
Bowyer was shown a yellow card by referee Chris Foy during the match

Birmingham’s Lee Bowyer has made an unreserved apology to a West Brom fan he exchanged words with after being substituted in Saturday’s derby match.

The midfielder was taken off following a booking for a challenge on Gabriel Tamas in Blues’ 3-1 away defeat.Bowyer then spoke to a spectator seated behind the visitors’ dugout as he took his seat on the bench. The fan complained to stewards but a Baggies spokesman said Bowyer’s apology marked “the end of the matter”.Bowyer moved to a different seat in the dugout following the exchange but will not face any further investigation over the incident. “A fan made a complaint to a steward over comments made by Lee Bowyer after he had been substituted,” confirmed a West Brom spokesman.

Lee is mature but I didn’t want to take a chance and get egg on my face

Birmingham manager Alex McLeish on Lee Bowyer’s substitutioncove

“But then Lee Bowyer made an unreserved apology to the supporter and that was the end of the matter.”Birmingham manager Alex McLeish had intended to withdraw Alexander Hleb in place of striker Nikola Zigic but opted to replace Bowyer instead. The former England international initially appeared to be angered by a tackle from Gonzalo Jara and was then aggravated by referee Chris Foy’s decision to show him the yellow card. However, McLeish had insisted immediately after the match that his decision to take off the 33-year-old was a precaution.”Lee is mature but I didn’t want to take a chance and get egg on my face,” he stated.”We were talking about taking Alexander Hleb off at that time because he has not played a lot of football and he looked fatigued.”Then Bowyer got the booking and I took him off just in case.”Bowyer has received one other yellow card so far this season – in Birmingham’s 2-2 draw against Bolton on 29 August.Another three league bookings before 31 December’s ‘amnesty’ would result in him receiving an automatic one-match ban.

Coventry City sign shamed Marlon King after release from prison

MARLON King has made his return to professional football after finally completing his protracted move to Coventry, penning a deal until the end of the season. The 30-year-old’s future in the game came under scrutiny immediately after he was released from prison back in late July having served half of an 18-month sentence for sexual assault and causing actual bodily harm. But after signing at the Ricoh Arena, King said: “I am very grateful for the chance Coventry City have given me and I look forward to working with Aidy (Boothroyd) again.”I will be working hard to repeat the success we had when we last worked together (at Watford).”King saw his contract terminated by then employers Wigan in the aftermath of the well-publicised incident but, shortly after his release, was invited by former Watford manager Boothroyd to train with Coventry.Having impressed both at their Ryton training facility and for the club’s reserves, Boothroyd opted to take a calculated gamble on the striker around two weeks ago and a medical was completed and personal terms agreed. However, the deal has since been held up for unknown reasons, believed to be above the head of the City boss who, along with King, has been keen to tie things up, and rival npower Championship clubs such as Nottingham Forest reignited late interest. After much uncertainty, however, Boothroyd has today finally got his man and King is expected to make his Sky Blues debut in Saturday’s home clash against Preston.Boothroyd said: “When I managed Marlon at Watford he was a first class professional and I fully expect that to be the case at Coventry City.”He’s been working very hard with us in an attempt to regain his fitness.”He has looked sharp in training and in a couple of reserve matches but we will have to assess very carefully when he is ready for the step into Championship football.”
