The players look shocked as Valencia awaits attention at Old Trafford

Manchester United’s Antonio Valencia will miss “a good portion” of the season after being injured in Tuesday’s Champions League game against Rangers.

The winger, 25, suffered significant ligament damage, plus a fractured ankle and underwent surgery on Wednesday.Despite concerns over the Ecuadorian’s mental state, United insisted the former Wigan star remained optimistic.A statement from Old Trafford said: “Antonio is perfectly fine, very positive and very determined.”

The three defendants are the latest in a long line of yobs who were charged following the disorder that erupted after Burton Albion’s victory over Grimsby at the Pirelli Stadium on May 8 — a result that sealed the latter’s relegation from the Football League.Only two of the defendants were dealt with, with the third due to stand trial at a later date.Defendants  X and X were both given three-year football match banning orders and, between them, were fined more than £800 for public order offences.X, prosecuting, said: “These offences relate to the pitch invasion that followed the football match on May 8, where there was large-scale public disorder.

“The CCTV footage shows X in front of Grimsby fans confronting police officers. One officer says he was personally confronted by X at a distance of six to eight feet.“X shouted at the officer, but later claimed the comments were directed at Burton fans.Sukhi Ark, defending X, said: “Emotions were running high because Grimsby had been relegated and he regrets his actions. “He has been going to Grimsby matches since he was seven.“He made full admissions in interview and he has lost his good name.”As well as the football banning order, which prevents him from attending matches in England, Wales, Scotland and some games abroad, X must pay a £345 fine, £85 court costs and a £15 victim surcharge.Mr Gormley, in relation to   X said: “The CCTV shows X in the centre of the pitch running towards stewards and police.“He is seen running with his jacket hood up but he is later seen confronting officers with the hood down.“He is also seen with blood running down his face. This was caused when he confronted a police officer who had to strike him in the head.” Mr Ark, defending X, said: “His emotions simply overtook him.“He had consumed alcohol before the game.“He made full admissions and says his behaviour was unacceptable. He will never behave like this again.”X also received a three-year football banning order, was fined £310, and told to pay £85 court costs and a £15 victim surcharge.The third defendant, X, admitted invading the pitch but denied a separate offence of assaulting a match steward.He was bailed until his trial at Burton Magistrates’ Court on October 28.
