Sunderland have broken their transfer record to sign striker Asamoah Gyan from Rennes for a fee “in excess of £13m” according to the English club.

The 24-year-old forward, who scored three times for Ghana at the World Cup, has signed a four-year deal.The Ghanaian could make his debut against Wigan on 11 September.Gyan’s arrival comes on the day it was announced that striker Fraizer Campbell will be out for at least six months after rupturing cruciate ligaments.Meanwhile, fellow striker Martyn Waghorn has left the Stadium of Light for Championship side Leicester.Sunderland boss Steve Bruce was delighted to have completed the Asamoah deal.

Rangers and Celtic are currently not part of the Premier League’s plans

Celtic’s largest shareholder believes the Old Firm giants will join England’s Premier League because of the influence of media organisations on football.

Last year, Premier League clubs voted to reject a proposal to bring Rangers and Celtic into the English top flight.”What will dictate them joining is the fans and the media companies,” Dermot Desmond told BBC Radio 5 live.”The companies are directing Premier League policy and they’ll decide it’ll be a good thing if the pair joined.”The 2009 proposal was put together by Bolton chairman Phil Gartside who suggested that the Scottish sides would be part of a two-tier Premier League.

Two fans injured after Hartlepool United match

TWO football fans were hospitalised following violent clashes after a Hartlepool United

match.

A fracas broke out near to the town’s train station between two groups of men after Hartlepool’s match with Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday.The violence occurred at Station Approach on Church Street just before 6pm.A 50-year-old man from Sheffield was airlifted to James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough with serious head injuries and was in a critical condition.A second Sheffield man, aged 46, was taken by ambulance to the same hospital with head injuries, but has since been discharged.Five men from Hartlepool have been arrested in connection with the incident.Two men, aged 48 and 24, have been arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm, two men, aged 45 and 25, have been arrested on suspicion of affray, and a 27-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of assault, violent disorder and actual bodily harm.

Lithuanian army placed on alert ahead of Scotland visit for Euro 2012 qualifier

LITHUANIAN officials have drafted in state troops plus hundreds of extra police officers to help deal with the Tartan Army.

Kaunas city council have also cancelled one of the country’s biggest summer festivals in an effort to avoid any potential flashpoints during Scotland’s visit this weekend.Around 3000 supporters will descend on the second-largest city in Lithuania on Friday when Craig Levein’s side begin their Euro 2012 qualifying campaign.And the locals are not prepared to take any security risks despite the good reputation of the Scotland fans.The Tartan Army will be given an escort to the Dariaus Gireno Stadium on Friday night while police officers will be positioned outside every city-centre bar to look out for potential troublemakers.Kaunas municipality director Vygantas Guden said: “Scottish football fans can endanger the safety of the Kaunas people.”City police leaders have warned us they could be flooded with problems so we must take every step to ensure to ensure law and order.”The police have tightened up security following the trouble caused by Rangers supporters during their Champions League qualifying clash with FBK Kaunas in the city two years ago.”Deputy council chief Zeno Abramaviius said: “We hope that this time the Scottish fans will be much calmer but we will be watching them very closely.””We have brought in more troops and there will be a larger police force than usual. We know the Scottish fans will drink in the bars so our forces will certainly be strengthened.”Two years ago there were instances where fans threw televisions through the windows of their hotels. We hope this time they will behave in a civilised manner.”Meanwhile, Lithuanian skipper Tomas Danilevicius is bracing himself for a rough ride on the pitch.He said: “Scottish football is pretty rough.
