Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson refused to blame Pepe Reina after the keeper’s error gifted Arsenal a 90th-minute equaliser in the 1-1 draw at Anfield.
Reina spilled the ball into his own net after Gunners striker Marouane Chamakh had bundled a Tomas Rosicky cross against the post.”Pepe Reina is very disappointed,” said Hodgson. “I thought he did very well as he’s struggled with a shoulder injury.”We’re disappointed the game ended that way but very proud of the performance.”Liverpool had Joe Cole sent off on the stroke of half-time but later took the lead through David Ngog and looked set to hold on for the three points until the visitors were handed a late leveller by Reina.”I thought our second half performance was better than the first half,” added Hodgson.

Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart produced an outstanding display to deny Tottenham victory at White Hart Lane.
Hart saved acrobatically from Jermain Defoe, Tom Huddlestone and Benoit Assou-Ekotto as Spurs started strongly.The excellent Gareth Bale struck the foot of the post with a rasping drive as a misfiring City were overwhelmed.City did improve after the break and Shaun Wright-Phillips was denied by a last-ditch tackle, but Hart twice kept out efforts from Roman Pavlyuchenko.And for all City’s spending in the close-season, more than £100m on five new signings, it was Hart – brought back to the club after a season-long loan with Birmingham – who was their most valuable asset.

Didier Drogba notched a hat-trick as Chelsea signalled their intent to defend their Premier League title by thrashing newly-promoted West Brom.
Florent Malouda struck early on from six yards before Drogba scored with a free-kick on the stroke of half-time.Drogba later pounced after a goal-line clearance and scored with a deflected strike from the edge of the area.Frank Lampard finished an attractive move, while Malouda struck from close range on the stroke of full-time.Chelsea, who ended last season with an 8-0 thrashing of Wigan, have now won the opening day for the last nine seasons.

A casual buy no. 23

I scoped out these Puma Whirlwind downtown, they were cheapish so I picked up a pair although I certainly don’t need more trainers. That’s what happens when you head to the shops for a nose when you’re working shifts and have a spare mid-week day to arse about in. I came, I saw, I bought – another shoe box to add to the fourth (cardboard) wall I’m forever building in the spare room at Hovian Mansions.
After the Bavarian Dassler brothers split acrimoniously in 1948, with Adi setting up ‘adidas’ one side of the river Aurach and Rudi on t’other, the older Rudi’s ‘Puma’ sportswear company has played second fiddle to the younger Dassler’s sporting empire. When I say second fiddle, that is the case in worldwide appeal, and of course among Britain’s terrace dressers.The fact that Puma aren’t as popular as adidas has nothing to do with quality – Puma has always produced well-made and iconic footwear and sporting apparel; Puma have/had a certain appeal to casuals who have seen the three stripes adorned by all sorts of whoppers from every strata of modern society. If less is more then Puma is your trainer of choice. I like both, and probably prefer adidas, but I’m not a slavish collector of either.
My personal favourite Puma trainer is the Suede, a classic that will appeal to future lads as much as it has to previous generations of terrace tearaways. My trainer wall will now not be added to until next spring, I have to dig out the hiking boots and Clarks now that Winter is slowly approaching and the last piss-wet season at Withdean is upon us.
