Hungary coach Egervari expects refreshed England side

Highlights – Germany 4-1 England

By Julian Shea

Hungary’s new coach says he expects to face a different England from the one that disappointed at the World Cup when the sides meet at Wembley on Wednesday.

“The big teams that failed in South Africa, like England, had played too many league games and their players weren’t fresh,” said Sandor Egervari.”After a holiday and a pre-season, they will be fresher,” he told BBC Sport.”Steven Gerrard, Wayne Rooney and Frank Lampard are still world-class, playing in the best league in the world.”England’s poor showing in South Africa, culminating in a 4-1 defeat by Germany in the last 16, angered many fans and prompted the Football Association to cut ticket prices for Wednesday’s match in an attempt to win back disgruntled spectators.

606: DEBATE

But former Hungary Under-21 coach Egervari, who takes charge of the senior team for the first time, is not expecting to catch England with their guard down.”What happened at the World Cup won’t have any effect,” he said.Wednesday’s game between England and Hungary will inevitably bring to mind the historic 6-3 defeat England suffered at the hands of the legendary Ferenc Puskas and his “Magnificent Magyars” in 1953.It was the first time England had been beaten at home by a team from outside the British Isles and it was followed by a 7-1 reverse in Budapest, which remains England’s record defeat.Egervari said the history of the fixture was guaranteed to inspire Hungarian players and fans.

“What happened there [at Wembley] was a great success and very important. We always look forward to going there – it’s a holy place and we still look forward to going there now,” he added. While all England teams are inevitably measured against the benchmark of the 1966 World Cup winners, the Hungarian equivalent is the Golden Team of the 1950s.From June 1950 to February 1956, they amassed a record of 42 wins, seven draws and only one defeat.Tragically for Hungarian football, that defeat was in the 1954 World Cup final, where they lost 3-2 to a West Germany team they had previously beaten 8-3 in the group stages. The team from that era are still held in such regard that when captain Puskas died in 2006 at the age of 79, the country observed a day of mourning.”We’re very proud that we were once one of the best teams in the world,” said Egervari.

“It’s not realistic to look back at 1953 and 1954 and to believe we can have that kind of success again but we take great pride.”

What happened at the World Cup won’t have any effect

And Egervari is doing his best to pass on the torch of the memory of that team to the current crop of Hungarian youngsters.

“When I was a player, I was coached by two managers who played in that match against England – Nandor Hidegkuti, who scored twice in the match at Wembley, and Laszlo Budai, the right winger.”They fed back the importance of that game and I got lots of stories and feedback from what happened.”Sadly, they’ve both passed away and there are only two connections left to that game – goalkeeper Gyula Grosics and the right-back Jeno Buzanszky, who is coming to London for this game.”The glory days of Hungarian football are long gone, however, with the team having failed to qualify for a European championship since 1972 or a World Cup since 1986.But under Egervari, the Hungarian U20 side finished third in the World U20 Championships, and the U21 side look on course to qualify for the 2012 London Olympics.

Hungary went over four years unbeaten in the early 195

He is the seventh different coach for the national side in the last decade and says stability is the key if the team is to progress.”I hope I will stay at least four years until the next World Cup, and that results will prove this,” he said.

“I hope season by season there will be success and team-building will improve as the years go by.”I’ve managed six of the current senior squad at club level, so I’ve got the spine of the team and I’m familiar with them.”When the Hungarian Federation thought about me as coach, they looked at the fact that they wanted me to carry on doing the good work I was doing at junior levels.”But he says his first game in charge, against England, is just the start of a long road the team must travel.

Celtic star Aiden McGeady agrees £10m switch to Spartak Moscow as Neil Lennon prepares for spending spree

AIDEN McGeady last night agreed to make a £10million switch to Spartak Moscow.

Record Sport can reveal the Hoops winger will jet out to Russia on Thursday to sign a four-year deal worth £40,000 per week, tax free. The 24-year-old informed Celtic of his intentions over the weekend with the money from the move already earmarked for incoming transfers by Parkhead boss Neil Lennon.McGeady visited Moscow last week for a look round the facilities and met Spartak coach Valeri Karpin. The midfielder was impressed with what was on offer and last night Lennon admitted his star man is on his way.He said: “Aiden was in yesterday and more or less said his goodbyes.  He’s going to Moscow in the next couple of days to get the deal finalised.

“Having spoken to him yesterday he seems a lot more settled about the idea of going there.”You never know what might happen at the last minute but it should get done over the next couple of days.”I won’t be relieved when it’s done because I’ll be losing my best player but it’s good money for a top player.”McGeady would have preferred a switch to Aston Villa but Martin O’Neill was unable to match Spartak’s offer.  Celtic are delighted to net such an amount of money for McGeady and Lennon confimred he will be given all £10m to reinvest in new players. He said: “I’m not optimistic we’ll have a new face by Saturday but we’ll see if we can bring in not just one but maybe a couple. It could go right up until the end of August.”Craig Bellamy’s name keeps cropping up but whether we can do that one I don’t know.  I’ve not spoken to him and there has been no contact between the clubs.”

Rangers launch new round of talks to sign Nikica Jelavic from Rapid Vienna

Nikica Jelavic Image 2

RANGERS are edging closer to signing Croatia striker Nikica Jelavic after chief executive Martin Bain jetted back to Austria for a second round of crunch negotiations.Record Sport can reveal Bain flew out on Saturday to re-open talks with Rapid Vienna – and the clubs are now close to agreeing a fee worth around £4million for the 24-year-old.

Discussions went so well Bain was also granted permission to begin thrashing out Jelavic’s contract terms with his agent, even though some financial hurdles are to be overcome before any deal can be rubber-stamped.The fact Rangers are now in a position to talk terms with Jelavic is the clearest indication yet manager Walter Smith is closing in on his priority summer signing target. Smith remains hopeful an agreement can be reached between all parties within the next 24 hours as Bain attempts to piece together a complex deal.

But Rangers will NOT trade Andy Webster back to Dundee United as a makeweight in their attempts to sign Scottish Cup Final hero David Goodwillie.Record Sport first revealed in May that Goodwillie was on Smith’s radar. And even though Rangers are focused for now on the capture of Jelavic the youngster remains a potential target. We understand Bain has since made official contact with United chairman Stephen Thompson to ask how much it would cost to take Goodwillie from Tannadice. But Thompson refused to name a price and instead invited Rangers to make an offer. There have been no further talks and reports yesterday linking Webster – who spent last season on loan at United – with a return to Tayside as part of a swap deal are believed to be wide of the mark.Smith has ruled out a loan move for Monaco’s Eidur Gudjohnsen on account of the striker’s £50,000-a-week wages. But the Ibrox boss revealed he will reconsider bringing in top quality performers such as Gudjohnsen nearer the end of the transfer window when teams would be desperate to trim the wage bill. Six players have left Rangers this summer but Smith insists there is no pressure on him to sell any more.He said: “Any good players we have I want to keep. So far we’ve not had a bid for any player and don’t want to receive a bid for any player.”
