Posh match flare yob’s 3-year ban

A FOOTBALL fan has been banned from attending matches for three years after using a flare at a Peterborough United match.

MC(35) was given a three-year football banning order at Peterborough Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.C.was found guilty of possessing a flare at a Posh match against Ipswich at London Road on February 16 this year.He was filmed by a police officer shortly after kick-off at the Posh home match.A total of three flares were set off in the Ipswich away end and Codling was seen igniting one.He was arrested as he exited the ground after the match. When questioned by police, he denied igniting the flare and claimed he had found it smoking on the ground behind him.He said he feared it would burn his trousers, so he picked it up and held it at head height – so everyone could see it – just as it flared up.However, photographic evidence obtained by officers showed him holding the flare and smiling.A flare had gone off behind C and a camera focused to the area just in time to see C with the flare.Police were patrolling the match with handheld cameras. The banning order means C is not allowed to attend any professional football matches in England, Wales or Scotland or any England team games, either home or away.As well as the banning order, he was sentenced to 120 hours’ unpaid community service, to be undertaken over a year.He was also ordered to pay £500 in costs.Speaking after the hearing, Sergeant Stuart Saunders warned that behaviour such as C’s will not be tolerated by police and said officers would be keeping a close watch on games this season. He said: “Flares can be very dangerous, as was demonstrated at this week’s pre-season friendly match between Lincoln and Celtic, where a girl was injured by one.“I hope this tough sentence sends out a clear message that we will not tolerate use of flares, or any other dangerous behaviour, at Peterborough United games this season.”A spokesman for Peterborough United said the club takes a tough stance against troublemakers. He added that club takes health and safety very seriously. He said: “Peterborough United Football Club do not wish to see a repeat of this incident.“Flares are banned from the stadium and anyone found in possession of one at the stadium will be ejected and handed over to the police.”

Arsène Wenger asks Cesc Fábregas to end speculation over his future

• Manager makes plea after Arsenal’s 1-1 draw with Milan
• ‘This story had made our life difficult,’ says Frenchman

Arsène Wenger has called upon Cesc Fábregas to put an end to the relentless speculation about his future. The Arsenal captain is due to return to his club on Thursday, and his manager is eager to draw a line under the disruption that continues to flow on an almost daily basis from Spain. “This story in the last six months has made our life difficult and what is important is that Cesc comes out. Only Cesc can clear the air when he gets back from holiday. Only Cesc can stop the speculation,” said Wenger.

Portsmouth are being ‘held to ransom’ by former owner Alexandre Gaydamak

Portsmouth have accused former owner Alexandre Gaydamak of holding the club to ransom in a row over car parking charges for land the young entrepreneur still owns next to Fratton Park. The crisis club’s administrator, Andrew Andronikou, claims that Gaydamak, who bought then sold Pompey as they slipped towards financial ruin, could force Portsmouth to cancel their first home game of the new Championship season in two weeks’ time.

Demands: Alexandre Gaydamak says Portsmouth owe him money

Gaydamak insists that he has not been paid rent for use of the car park but yesterday allowed the car park to be used for free for Linvoy Primus’s testimonial, Portsmouth’s final preseason warm-up.Andronikou, who will lead the club’s defence against the taxman’s appeal over unpaid taxes in the High Court on Tuesday, said last night: ‘The timing of this could not be more sensitive, just before a new season and only days away from us dealing with a High Court appearance. They say we owe them for the car park and they are doing this because of concern about public liability claims in the car parking area. It is absolute nonsense. We are paying them £20,000 a month for the car park and that includes public liability. He [Gaydamak] is holding this club to ransom.’Gaydamak still owns much of the land around Fratton Park and has decided to charge £10 on match days for use of the main car park.Andronikou claims the former owner could also deny fans access to the ground. But a spokesman for Gaydamak denied charges of opportunism. ‘We have been trying for months to talk to the administrator and the club about the land,’ said the spokesman. ‘We’ve been begging them to come to an agreement.’Portsmouth face going into their Championship opener at Coventry next weekend without a shirt sponsor.Jobsite, the nationwide recruitment website, originally signed a two-year agreement but pulled out after Portsmouth went into administration.Although they agreed to have their name used at yesterday’s friendly against Fulham, it is understood their association with Pompey is dependent on Tuesday’s High Court appeal.Meanwhile, a local consortium have outlined plans for a £15m community buy-out of the club. Members of the Portsmouth Supporters Trust, Portsmouth Council and local businessmen yesterday met operations manager Lucius Peart. Portsmouth had an emergency meeting on Friday with what remains of their playing squad. The meeting was called by chief executive David Lampitt and ended with players fearing they will be asked to take a wage cut after having bonus payments, some in excess of £100,000, put back for 18 months, not the 12 months demanded as a maximum by the players’ union, the PFA.

Georgie Welcome heads for Ibrox trial as Rangers close in on Croatian Nikica Jelavic

WALTER SMITH says Rangers will have new players on board before the start of the new season.

And the Ibrox manager insists the club are working round the clock to make sure the right kind of players are added to strengthen Rangers’ bid to win three in a row.Honduran World Cup striker Georgie Welcome is due to arrive at Murray Park on Monday for a week’s trial. And Smith last night confirmed he is closing in on Rapid Vienna’s Nikica Jelavic. But the Austrians are demanding £3.25million – even though the Croatian striker is in the final year of his contract.Rangers won’t pay that amount but it is clear the manager sees Jelavic as a player who would bolster his squad.Smith said: “Of course we have an interest in him. Negotiations are going a bit slower than we had hoped but we are working on that.”

PORTA SOTTO L’OMBRELLONE……….
