Aston Villa manager Martin O’Neill says he is prepared to sell James Milner after the player expressed his desire to leave the club.
The England World Cup midfielder, 24, who joined Villa from Newcastle for £12m in 2008, was subject of a rejected £20m bid from Manchester City in May.”I had a conversation with James before the World Cup and he intimated that he’d like to go,” said O’Neill.”I’d imagine things will be resolved in the foreseeable future.”The Villa boss added: “City made an offer but it did not meet our valuation.”I’m sure matters will be resolved soon. James is back next week having had extended holiday.”

Three soccer thugs had already been subject to football banning orders
THREE Grimsby football thugs who terrorised Albion fans, police and shoppers following their team’s relegation have each been the subject of previous football banning orders.A former officer of the merchant navy was also up at Burton magistrates’ court yesterday as five Grimsby Town fans were brought in for the third week of sentencing.As reported, the police hope to bring 50 yobs to justice after violent clashes before and after the game.

Three-in-a-row would top the lot for Rangers, claims Lee McCulloch

LEE McCULLOCH last night insisted grabbing title glory this season would be Rangers’ greatest-ever league triumph.Celtic are odds-on favourites to wrest back the championship as the Ibrox club face up to an increasingly dwindling squad.Boss Walter Smith has just 13 senior players on the trip Down Under and must fill his g roup with k ids for the campaign ahead.And that’s why McCulloch believes securing a third SPL crown on the spin would be the club’s finest hour.The midfielder said: “If we were to win the league this season it would be the best of the lot. It really would top the previous two.”Last year we were written off. People weren’t expecting too much and it was brilliant to win the league with such a small squad.”This year the squad is even smaller and the opposition continues to strengthen and get better. So it would be one of the best of them all if we were to do it this year.”Rangers are in Australia for a three-match festival against Blackburn Rovers, Sydney FC and AEK Athens but the Ibrox side’s man for all positions isn’t looking back in anguish.And neither is he about to start waving a white flag.If anything McCulloch is more determined than ever to make sure Rangers overcome their difficulties.Although he has played his part in the squad which has claimed the last two titles he is honest enough to admit.From Back Page that Celtic will kick off the new campaign as favourites.McCulloch said: “Celtic appear to have money and Rangers don’t.”That’s just the way it is. So we’re the underdogs and we’ll be happy with that.”But we will be quietly confident that we’ll be in there challenging all the way and I would remind everyone of last season when we were supposed to be too weak to win the SPL title.“We did and the squad we have now is definitely good enough to mount a challenge.”Even so, a couple of fresh faces would help. It would also be beneficial if we could strengthen but if that isn’t possible we’ll just have to cope.”We did it before and we can do it again. I’m looking forward to the season and the challenge.”Although alarm bells might be ringing I would say this to the fans: be patient and trust the gaffer.”Trust that things will work out, the way they always have done in the past.”
