Tartan Army shouldn’t boo Allan McGregor on his return, says Scotland legend Andy Goram

ANDY GORAM last night insisted it would be a sad day for Scottish football if the Tartan Army jeered Allan McGregor.

The current Ibrox No.1 looks set to start between the sticks for Scotland in their Euro 2012 qualifying opener against Lithuania after a broken arm ruled Craig Gordon out for a minimum of two months.It will be McGregor’s first appearance since having his lifetime ban quashed by Scotland boss Craig Levein after his shameful part in the Boozegate Scandal under George Burley.But The Goalie, who won 43 caps for the national side, believes McGregor has served his time and deserves to be forgiven.Goram said: “It’s an awful shame for Craig. He was just getting back to top class and to break your arm the first time is bad but the second must be a sickener.”But it’s opened the door for Allan McGregor and Neil Alexander. I think McGregor has a bit more experience. He’s had the punishment from Rangers and he’s also had it from Scotland.”It’s not made him a worse keeper. In fact, it’s made him a better keeper.”He has performed as well as I’ve ever seen him and he got a few clean sheets last season and is back to his best.”The fans realise he’s made a mistake. He has apologised, done his time and taken his punishment.”Scotland fans shouldn’t have a pop at him for that. I’d be surprised if he got any stick. He bit the bullet and took a lot of crap for it.”Now he’s got the chance to be Scotland’s No.1 and if you get booed as Scotland’s No.1 you have a problem”It would have been a difficult one if George Burley had still been the manager but Craig Levein’s an honest man and it’s a clean slate.”If he makes the same mistake again then he deserves all he gets but I don’t see that being a problem.”As for Gordon they say you can’t break your bone in the same place twice. It’s either below or above the last break but I don’t know the details.”

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has assured the club he plans to remain at Anfield, BBC Sport understands.

Despite signing a new deal committing himself to Liverpool until 2013 only last June, reports suggested Gerrard would seek a transfer this summer.But after meeting boss Roy Hodgson, he has committed his future to the club.”I wanted the chance to meet Roy Hodgson privately,” the 30-year-old told the club website. “I’m very impressed with his plans for the team.”
