£12M pay-off is only way FA will get England flop boss Fabio Capello out hotseat

Fabio Capello Image 1

FABIO Capello will demand a £12million pay-off if he is sacked as England boss. The Italian has been taking legal advice on his position amid calls for him to be axed in the wake of England’s woeful World Cup campaign. The FA yesterday left Capello sweating on his future after announcing they will take time to consider his position following Sunday’s 4-1 last-16 defeat by Germany. But the coach – who has two seasons left on his £6m-a-year contract – is admant he wants to stay on and has consulted his son and lawyer Pierfilippo about his future. Now the FA – led by Sir Dave Richards – must decide whether to sack Capello or back him.The coach said: “I have spoken with Sir Dave Richards about the two years I have worked with the FA and they appreciated my work. He told me he has to take two weeks to make the decision.

“I want to stay. I decided to stay here because I like being England manager. I will accept whatever the FA decides.”Just weeks ago the FA removed a get-out clause which would have allowed them to review Capello’s position after the World Cup without having to pay any compensation. Now that may now cost them a cool £12m.

England fans dismayed after German mauling

LONDON: England fans were dismayed and angry Sunday after their team crashed out of the World Cup following a heavy defeat by old foes Germany, as the media lamented the side’s “humiliation”.

Much of the anger was directed at match officials for disallowing a clear England goal, but even the most die-hard fans conceded the side was outclassed by their arch-rivals.The country came to a standstill as Fabio Capello’s players walked onto the pitch in Bloemfontein, South Africa, with supporters packing out pubs on the hottest day of the year and leaving the streets of central London almost empty. But the result — a crushing 4-1 defeat for Capello’s side, England’s heaviest ever at a World Cup finals — turned high expectations into bitter disappointment and poured cold water on the party atmosphere.“Germany played well and we weren’t on our game,” said Phil Thomas, 21, at a pub in London’s west end district.“Typical. It’s the same old story, every time we play Germany,” said his friend, 22-year-old Dave Wright.Revellers at Glastonbury Festival, southwest England, chose to watch the match on outdoor big screens instead of partying to top music acts, as temperatures soared. But the defeat took the wind out of the sails of some 80,000 festival-goers — half the number attending the event — who had opted to watch the game.“It was embarrassing,” said 46-year-old Katy. “I can’t believe they get paid so much yet they were outclassed by kids from Germany.”Another supporter, Hugo, 24, echoed the disappointment: “I really thought we could do it today but we just didn’t turn up and that’s it for another four years.”There was disbelief when Uruguayan referee Jorge Larrionda somehow disallowed England player Frank Lampard’s goal which would have levelled the scores at 2-2 in the first half. But as the game went on, most England fans accepted the team was no match for the slick German side.“I’m outraged at that goal, that could have changed the whole game. There could have been a third and then a fourth goal,” Wright said. But he added: “Having said that, every goal we conceded was pathetic. The defending was abysmal. We didn’t deserve to go through.”The press also slammed the referee’s missing of what seemed to be such an obvious goal but said that did not let England off the hook for such a poor performance.“England suffer World Cup humiliation at hands of arch-rivals Germany (with a LOT of help from a Uruguayan referee),” said the Daily Mail.“Bungling match officials shamefully failed to spot a Frank Lampard equaliser,” said the Sun, but added that England were “totally outplayed for the bulk of the match.”“England, for all their exertion, had been a markedly inferior team,” said the Guardian. — AFP

English Football Fans Attack Germans In Streets, Burn Flags

A lone German supporter finds himself in the wrong place at the wrong time as he is surrounded by England fans bitter at their team’s colossal loss. The man, who was bare-chested in London’s Leicester Square, is jostled and elbowed as he tries to find an escape route. This was one of a few isolated incidents of football violence to flare around the world after England were sent crashing out of the World Cup after being beaten 4-1 by Germany.

Roy Hodgson poised to become new Liverpool manager

Fulham manager Roy Hodgson
Hodgson has also been linked with the England manager’s job

Roy Hodgson is set to be appointed Liverpool’s new manager by Thursday, BBC Sport understands.

The Reds were granted permission to speak to the 62-year-old two weeks ago by his current club Fulham.Hodgson has also been linked with the England manager’s job following the team’s humiliating exit from the World Cup but Liverpool have acted quickly. The Englishman will replace Rafael Benitez in the Anfield hot seat after the Spaniard left at the start of June.”Hodgson has always been the number one target of the board at Anfield to replace Benitez,” said Ian Dennis, Radio 5 live’s senior football reporter.

After Fulham granted Liverpool permission to speak to Hodgson, it was just a matter of the clubs agreeing a compensation deal for him.“Hodgson has been in charge of Fulham since December 2007 and signed a new 12-month rolling contract in December 2009.Although he suffered a difficult start to his tenure, winning only nine points from his first 13 league matches, he saved the club from relegation in 2007/8, securing survival on the final day of the campaign. The following season he steered the club to seventh place in the Premier League – their highest ever finish – and a place in the Europa League. His achievement in guiding Fulham to the final of that competition, when they beat Juventus and Wolfsburg en route, saw him named last season’s manager of the year by the League Manager’s Association.Hodgson has also managed Italian giants Inter Milan, Blackburn and Switzerland, who he guided to the last 16 of the 1994 World Cup.Aston Villa boss Martin O’Neill, former Real Madrid coach Manuel Pellegrini, ex-Chelsea boss Guus Hiddink, Croatia coach Slaven Bilic and former Manchester City manager Mark Hughes have all been linked with the Liverpool post.

PORTA SOTTO L’OMBRELLONE……….
