It’s do or die: Steven Gerrard talks the talk ahead of must-win match with Slovenia

By Sportsmail Reporter
Last updated at 7:35 PM on 22nd June 2010

Steven Gerrard has issued a rallying call to his England team on the eve of their clash with Slovenia, calling the  match a ‘do-or-die’ situation.

The captain is the only member of the team to have scored in South Africa so far, and he knows another blank against the smallest nation in the competition would be disastrous for the country.’As captain it’s important I switch attention to the game as it’s a do-or-die situation,’ he said. ‘Training was very good and sharp this morning so we need to go out and do the business.’

Concerns about morale in the camp have been raised in the wake of last week’s drab goalless draw with Algeria, a point accentuated by John Terry’s controversial press conference.Gerrard, though, insists the past is the past and he only has eyes for the future.

‘He’s gone out and said what he said but I think it’s time to move on,’ added the Liverpool midfielder.Manager Fabio Capello also insisted today that his relationship with his players is ‘really good’.The Italian claimed he never contemplated dropping John Terry following the defender’s choice to raise a number of grievances within the squad in a public forum on Sunday rather than behind closed doors.’John Terry is one of the most important players,’ Capello said.Asked about his relationship with the players, he added: ‘Really good, because every time when I speak with the players they follow me. The players are happy. They trained very well.’I think it’s normal to have pressure at the moment. We have a play-off to be in or out. We have to win.’Capello also backed Wayne Rooney to up his game following recent criticism of his below-par performances, especially in the goalless draw with Algeria.’I spoke a lot of time with Rooney and he is an important player for us,’ said Capello.’Sometimes the pressure is so big, also for the important players. He improved in the last three days during training. I am sure tomorrow he will play really well.’Rooney has faced criticism in some quarters for voicing his displeasure at the England fans booing the team off the pitch after the Algeria game.

Gerrard sympathises with the supporters and revealed the team are desperate to put on a better performance tomorrow in order to get them back on side.’I can certainly understand,’ he said. ‘We came into this tournament with big expectations.’People have paid good money and expect us to win football matches so we as players take responsibility for underperforming in the last game and the idea is try to put in a good performance tomorrow, win the game and change the perception of how we’ve done so far.’We want to make the nation proud and happy. A good win tomorrow would certainly give the people more confidence.’You can see that the players hurt from the Algeria performance. We let the country down by underperforming and we want to put that right.

‘I can see the hunger in the guys, we can’t wait for the game to start to put it right because we haven’t enjoyed the past couple of days – the criticism and that feeling you get when you’ve underperformed and you’ve not done yourself justice.’Capello admitted it was possible he had made mistakes in England’s opening two games but has called for his players to knuckle down and start battling.’It’s possible I made some mistakes,’ he said. ‘It’s possible. We have to improve if we want to win. I expect to see the spirit of the team. I want to see them fighting every moment, I want that we win the ball back quickly.

‘We have to press more, we have to run more. This I want to see.’Gerrard insisted the players would try to present a more attacking threat tomorrow as they look to more closely resemble the England team that breezed through the World Cup qualifiers. The Liverpool skipper added: ‘In the last performance we stopped doing what we done in the qualifying games. We were really confident, we played aggressive football and we were really difficult to beat.’Although we never lost against Algeria, there were certainly things missing and tomorrow hopefully we can get those things back.’We want to start the game really well, play compact, difficult to beat but also have the cutting edge in the final third where we can get the goals that we need.’Gerrard also denied that he and his team-mates had put pressure on Capello to pick Joe Cole in his team tomorrow, adding: ‘No not at all. Obviously the manager picks the team he thinks best to do the job.’And obviously the players aren’t in any position to question who the manager picks. Whoever he picks we go with that and we give it our best shot.’

England fans in Cape Town upbeat ahead of Slovenia game

England fans at the Cape of Good hope (Pic:Ian Vogler)

Forget The Cape of Good Hope – it’s The Cape of Last Hope, according to England fans.

Supporters flocked to the famous landmark yesterday desperately hoping for a turnaround of fortunes for Fabio Capello’s team.Despite the shocker against Algeria, most supporters still believe we can qualify for the knockout stages. And they were more upbeat than gloomy as they admired views at Africa’s most southerly point.Jim Stokesby, 43, of Stafford, said: “It is quite apt that we’re here – we’re all hoping things get better.”It’s the Cape of Last Hope are far as we’re concerned, we don’t want to think about going home on Thursday. Despite everything we’ve seen in the last two games I still believe we can progress.”Friend Alan Rogerson, 45, of Litchfield, added: “Hope is the word – I’m crossing everything. There’s still confidence in Fabio and as long as Joe Cole gets a game we’ll be OK.”Stuart Herbert, 23, from Lincoln, was equally optimistic as he gazed out at the Indian Ocean.”Wayne Rooney will come good and bag a hat-trick on Wednesday,” he said. “We have to look on the bright side – things can’t get any worse than Friday. Actually, things could be worse – we could be French!” Elsewhere in the city, other England fans were more downbeat as they prepared to head to Port Elizabeth for Wednesday’s game. On the Waterfront, flags which had been hung from every spare railing or balcony had been taken down.Mark Webster, 51, of Derby, who works for Rolls-Royce, said: “It was a disappointing performance. We ran out of ideas. I didn’t boo – but Rooney’s reaction was very disappointing considering the money we’ve spent.”Chris Green 52, of Sidcup, Kent, added: “The big players have to raise their game.”Mike Corry, 59, from Durham, said: “The passion from fans will still be there but we need to be rewarded by the players now.”South African Lucas Radebe, ex-Leeds United star and now an ambassador for England’s 2018 bid, believes things will improve, declaring: “I always felt Fabio will come good.” Ex-Sunderland defender Gary Bennett, 38, added: “Hopefully Fabio can sort out the problems.”

After admitting their £50million plans for stadium redevelopment were over-ambitious the Edinburgh side are now looking to erect a £15m grandstand. And Fedotovas has promised Gorgie fans owner Vladimir Romanov will deliver on his promise to give the club’s ground a facelift even though their debt has risen to £35m.He said: “We are committed to continue with our redevelopment plans. I read Hearts can’t afford to build a new stand, which is wrong.”We can’t afford to stay with an outdated, inconvenient stand. We have to address this problem quickly.”

Motherwell can’t afford to underestimate Europa League foes Breidablik, warns Ross Forbes

MOTHERWELL star Ross Forbes knows all too well the dangers Icelandic opposition can pose as Motherwell prepare to face Breidablik in the Europa League.Well host the first leg of the second qualifying round at Fir Park on July 15, with the return leg a week later in Kopavogur, just outside Reykjavik.Boss Craig Brown will probably have to do his homework on the Icelandic Cup winners. But Forbes claims there is no chance of Motherwell taking their progression in the tournament for granted, after he twice lost against Iceland as part of the Scotland Under-19 squad back in 2007.”I went to play Iceland with Scotland in a couple of challenge games a few years ago and we lost both 1-0 and 3-0,” said the midfielder.”They were very strong, good technically and were set up well.”We can’t think we are through – that’s the wrong attitude to go into a game with.”They were a very good side then and there is a chance I could come up against some of the same players.”Motherwell crashed to Steaua Bucharest in the third qualifying round last year but Forbes hopes the experience of veteran boss Brown can make all the difference this time around.”We are a year older now and have guys in Craig Brown and Archie Knox who have so much experience to help us,” he said.”We will be expected to go through and it would be good if we could get some luck and reach the group stages.”
