Northern Ireland action
Johnny Gorman fends off the attention of Sabr Sarioglu in New Britain

An inexperienced Northern Ireland side lost 2-0 to Turkey in a friendly match played in searing heat in Connecticut.

Nigel Worthington’s team, missing 17 regulars, defended well in the first half to restrict Turkey to few chances.Sercan Yilidrim fired a right-foot shot into the bottom corner past Alan Blayney in the 47th minute.Blayney pushed a Colin Kazim-Richards shot onto the bar but Emre set up Semih Senturk to rifle home a low 10-yard shot into the net in the 71st minute.Tuncay blasted over the bar when he should have scored in the second minute and the former Middlesbrough striker then saw his long range shot hit a Northern Ireland defender.Kazim-Richards headed over from a corner and Blayney, one of five Irish League players to start the game, saved low at his left post as a corner deflected off debutant teenager Johnny Gorman.

Substitute Sercan completed a good move by rifling his right-foot shot into the bottom corner past Blayney for the opener.Gorman then did well to beat a defender and cross from the left wing but no Northern Ireland player could connect in the penalty area.Soon after, Rory Patterson set up Andrew Little but his ambitious overhead kick landed on top of the net.Kazim-Richards saw his 56th-minute piledriver pushed onto the bar by Linfield goalkeeper Blayney and Semih Senturk fired just wide.

606: DEBATE

Ex-Newcastle player Emre set up Fenerbahce forward Senturk, who fired a low shot past Blayney from 10 yards for Turkey’s second goal and his seventh in international football.Turkey continued to dominate and press for a third as Nigel Worthington’s side began to tire in the heat.

Stephen Craigan cleared off the line as Tuncay moved into convert a Sercan cross and Sarioglu headed over.Craigan again cleared off the line and Arda Turan rifled a right-foot shot wide of the post.Colin Coates, James Lawrie and senior debutants Josh Magennis, Rory McArdle and Michael Bryan all came on as second-half substitutes.Northern Ireland face a 10-hour flight ahead of the second match of their tour against World-Cup bound Chile on Sunday night.

‘Pathetic’ football hooligans in train ambush are sentenced

Published Date: 26 May 2010

LEEDS United football yobs left train carriages spattered with blood after attacking Bradford City supporters in an ambush. The thugs used sticks and planks of wood to carry out the assault as horrified women with small children looked on.The train driver was also assaulted and windows smashed in the pre-arranged violence at Bramley railway station, Leeds.Judge Kerry Macgill branded seven young thugs as “pathetic” and “not proper football fans” as he sentenced them at Leeds Crown Court for violent disorder. The court heard that around 25 Leeds fans ambushed the train as it pulled into the station at around 6.30pm.They attacked the train with bottles and pieces of wood before some of the Leeds fans boarded and tried to pull Bradford supporters onto the platform.Terrified passengers, including small children, were protected by some of the Bradford supporters. One passenger, however, suffered a gash to the head after being struck by a bottle and the driver was hit with a can as he tried to contact police. Those involved later bragged about it on the internet.Seven of them, all from Leeds, were sentenced after they admitted violent disorder.RJ, 21 the ringleader, was jailed for five years after he also pleaded guilty to causing a barmaid grievous bodily harm by throwing an ashtray at her face in his local pub.JB, who is currently serving a three-year sentence for a separate offence of wounding, was jailed for 18 months.JD, 20 was jailed for 18 months.JB, 19,and WJ were given 12-month suspended sentences, 240 hours’ unpaid work and each ordered to pay £180 compensation. Two other members of the gang, aged 16 and 17 at the time of the incident, were handed community punishments and ordered to pay compensation.Judge Macgill imposed two suspended jail sentences after hearing how they had good work records and had acted out of character.
