Crowd trouble marred Crystal Palace‘s escape from relegation after a 2-2 draw with Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsbrough kept the London club in the Championship.Some Palace fans went on to the pitch after the full-time whistle and some Wednesday supporters ran on to confront them.The Palace defender Clint Hill was cut off from the rest of his team and forced to make a run for the tunnel, during which some Wednesday fans appeared to be throwing punches at him.Police struggled to control the crowds but were able to restore order eventually.
Old Firm set for London glamour tournaments on same weekend

RANGERS and Celtic fans are heading for a midsummer clash in London with both clubs invited to take part in glamour tournaments on the same weekend.Celtic have already confirmed they will participate in the Emirates Cup on Saturday, July 31 and Sunday, August 1 alongside hosts Arsenal and continental big guns AC Milan and Lyon.Record Sport can reveal that over the same two days Rangers have been asked to play in the Wembley Cup which will feature Chelsea and a top La Liga club.The SPL champions have yet to accept the offer from event organisers IMG although if they do, about 30,000 Old Firm fans could descend on the capital for the two events.Security concerns have been raised but it’s understood the Metropolitan Police have given the green light for Rangers and Celtic to be in London at the same time.They feel they can cope with a massive influx of supporters from north of the border – an attitude in stark contrast with Manchester police who blocked plans to lure Rangers south for Gary Neville’s August testimonial.Meanwhile, Rangers are set to lock horns with former boss Alex McLeish after lining up a friendly with Birmingham on August 7.

Property tycoon Andrew Ellis steps up £33m bid to buy Rangers

ANDREW Ellis has stepped up his £33million Rangers takeover bid in an attempt to prevent an Ibrox exodus.
Six players, including Kris Boyd who bagged his 100th SPL goal at the weekend, are out of contract in June and Rangers are expecting bids for their other key players.But Ellis, who has completed his due diligence, has revealed he intends locking the door before anyone leaves.And as Record Sport reported more than a month ago, that also includes manager Walter Smith and his backroom team. It is also Ellis’ intention to offer Rangers owner Sir David Murray a life presidency.Despite reports in other papers suggesting the Ellis interest was dead the London-based property developer has been working to a timetable which he believes should give him full control in time to call the shots on who should stay and who should go.And in a statement last night he revealed Rangers’ debt to Lloyds Bank would be wiped. He said: ”The bid includes all the club’s debt and I’m optimistic there will be serious developments in the next three to four weeks.”Should I gain control of the club I intend to offer Walter a new contract as his experience and knowledge is invaluable both to me and the club.”It is only fitting Sir David Murray should be offered the role of life president as what he has done for the club can never be forgotten.”Ellis has always remained confident his offer would be acceptable and the next step will be to make a bid for the necessary shares.If the process meets with takeover panel approval Ellis hopes to be in control by the end of the month and he already knows who he would like to keep although he will be guided largely by Smith, provided, of course, he agrees to remain in place.But with a promise of ser ious investment to strengthen the squad Smith, who a long with Ally McCoist, Kenny McDowall and Ian Durrant, has been working without a contract, is almost certain to stay on.Smith fears he may lose six top-team players at least in June with David Weir, Kris Boyd, Nacho Novo, DaMarcus Beasley, Kirk Broadfoot and Stevie Smith all out of contract.Smith also has concerns about Kenny Miller, Kevin Thomson and Danny Wilson, who are about to enter into the final years of their current deals.Then there is the distinct possibility Rangers could lose Madjid Bougherra, Steve Davis and Allan McGregor.But Ellis is prepared to make offers which will keep them all at Ibrox should the manager give his approval.

Celtic triumphed in the final Old Firm game of the season as Rangers sustained a first derby defeat in over a year.
Lee Naylor’s deflected free-kick gave the hosts an eighth-minute lead and Marc-Antoine Fortune headed Celtic’s second after Kenny Miller had levelled.Robbie Keane and Scott Brown threatened to add to Celtic’s advantage.Miller almost equalised for a second time when he struck the post before Rangers’ Lee McCulloch was sent off after receiving a second booking.Celtic’s seventh straight Scottish Premier League win under interim manager Neil Lennon meant a third loss in the division for Rangers, who retained the championship last month.

Hull City boss Iain Dowie hopes to get the job on a long-term basis, despite his side’s relegation from the Premier League being confirmed on Monday.
Dowie, 45, has a contract at the KC Stadium until the end of the season.The 2-2 draw at Wigan sealed Hull’s fate and Dowie said: “Clearly the club faces a massive rebuilding task.”My record in the Championship is decent and I feel you can always build something but my future is something for the powers that be to discuss.”Dowie was appointed football management consultant on 17 March after former boss Phil Brown was placed on gardening leave but he has won only one of his eight games in charge, taking only five of the available 24 points.
