Man City 3 1 Aston Villa

Carlos Tevez (left) equalises for Manchester City from the penalty spot
Tevez equalised with a low penalty that just eluded Friedel

By Paul Fletcher

Manchester City scored twice in as many minutes to defeat Aston Villa and keep alive their hopes of claiming fourth spot in the Premier League.

Villa, whose defeat ended their attempt to finish fourth, took the lead through John Carew’s low strike.Carlos Tevez equalised from the penalty spot after Stephen Warnock brought down Adam Johnson before Emmanuel Adebayor struck a second from close range.Craig Bellamy sealed City’s points with a curling strike late in the match.Villa went into the contest on the back of four wins and a draw since their hammering at Chelsea. But their failure to pick up at least a point at Eastlands ended their hopes of playing Champions League football next season.Tottenham defeated Bolton at White Hart Lane to maintain their grip in the sought-after fourth place with a one-point advantage over City and two games left to play.

Roberto Mancini hoping for Manchester City stay

Mancini looks ahead to Villa match

Roberto Mancini is desperate to continue as Manchester City manager next season, even if the club do not qualify for the Champions League.

The Italian was charged with securing a top-four Premier League finish after replacing Mark Hughes in December. His side are currently sixth in the league, one point off fourth-placed Tottenham with three games to play.Mancini said: “I want to stay 200%, and if the owner wants me to stay, I will. I think I will be manager in August.”Failure to secure Champions League football could see Mancini follow Hughes out of the exit door at Eastlands.Mancini’s side have games against fellow Champions League chasers Aston Villa and Tottenham as well as a trip to West Ham on the last day of the season.

Hibs 1-2 Hearts: Last gasp Obua goal seals victory

A LAST-GASP goal from David Obua handed Hearts all three points at Easter Road and left John Hughes still looking for his first victory over the Tynecastle side.

Hibs had taken a first-half lead after being awarded a penalty, despite there seeminHearts had an early opportunity when David Templeton cut in from the right to get a shot in from the edge of the box, but Graeme Smith was down well to push it away.Hibs could also have bagged an early opener when Ian Murray and Colin Nish combined to set up Derek Riordan, only for Jamie MacDonald to get a hand to the shot, sending it trickling just wide of the goalkeeper’s left-hand post.Obua a should have put the visitors in front in 15 minutes when Laryea Kingston floated a free kick into the six-yard box but was just inches away from connecting.David Wotherspoon then carved out a chance for Hibs, racing down the right and whipping the ball across for Paul Hanlon, only for the young defender to send his downward header wide.Hearts came closest to a goal in 23 minutes when Ian Black’s ball in from the left was headed straight back out to the feet of Kingston by Ian Murray, who was trying to clear his lines. The Ghana international caught it sweetly from 25 yards out, only for it to crack off the base of Smith’s right-hand stick.MacDonald did well to keep out a shot from Rankin just seven minutes before the break, after the little midfielder was teed up by Nish on the edge of the box. After the break Hearts almost cost themselves a goal when a poor pass back from Marius Zaliukas left MacDonald in trouble, the Hearts goalkeeper fluffing an attempt to clear it and instead the ball coming off his ankle and, fortunately for the keeper, going just past for a corner.Hibs were awarded a penalty in 52 minutes when Zaliukas was judged to have brought John Rankin down just inside the box. Lee Wallace did everythin possible to put Anthony Stokes off as he stepped up to the spot and then David Obua joined in with the diversionary tactics, but nothing worked as the Irishman calmly slotted home to the keeper’s right from 12 yards.Hibs threatened again when a cracking ball on the angle form Nish found Riordan out wide but his ball in was cut out by Zaliukas, whose header handed the Easter Road side a corner that came to nothing.Hearts levelled in 71 minutes after a long kick from MacDonald found Obua and the gangly Ugandan knocked it on for Calum Elliot. The Hearts sub, on to replace Gary Glen, was challenged by Smith, who had raced off his line and the ball rebounded to Suso, who rattled it straight into an empty net..The Jambos hit a dramatic late winner when a ball in from Templeton from the left took a slight touch from Elliot before being rattled high into the back of the net by Obua from just a couple of yards out.

The Scotland striker fired low into the far corner from 16 yards after only two minutes at Tannadice.Nacho Novo jinked into the area before slotting the ball into the far corner after 41 minutes.Rangers looked to be cruising to a win until Damian Casalinuovo’s deflected late header led to a nervous ending.

I set Rangers up like Jose did with Inter and I was slaughtered – he’s hailed a genius, says Walter Smith

WHAT’S the difference between Walter Smith and Jose Mourinho?

The Special One goes to Barcelona with Inter Milan, stonewalls his way to the Champions League Final and is praised for his tactical genius. The Govan One tries the same thing against Barca and Lionel Messi calls him anti-football.And don’t think Smith failed to be struck by the irony as he watched events unfold in the Nou Camp in midweek.UEFA’s statistics showed the Catalans completed 555 passes in Barcelona, while Inter managed just 67 in the course of a 1-0 defeat that was enough to see them through to the final on aggregate. The Italians didn’t even have a single shot on target while they were content with 25 per cent possession to Barca’s 75.Smith said: “I think I’ve always had a pragmatic attitude to the game, like Mourinho. He has always built from a solid base and been highly successful at the same time.”Chelsea used the same cautious approach, home and away, when they played Barcelona in the Champions League and nobody batted an eyelid. But when Rangers set out to play in an identical manner we were heavily criticised.”I could point out that when Chelsea and Inter were playing that way it was a tactical approach designed to look for victory.”When I did it with Rangers it was to avoid defeat.”But Smith won’t dwell on there being two sides to every story. He’s too busy plotting a decent end to a season he doesn’t think deserves to be tarnished by a sloppy conclusion. And anyone who still believes there’s such a thing as a meaningless Old Firm game should have studied the manager’s response yesterday when he was asked if his team for today’s game against Dundee United would be tailored to meet the demands of Tuesday night’s derby.Smith said: “What do you think?”In other words, the league might be won but there are local issues to take care of and Smith added: “The biggest thing for me is to finish the season in a way that befits champions.”We’ve lost only two matches this season and that’s a record I’d like to maintain over the course of the three games we have left.”To have lost only a couple of games speaks volumes for the team’s resilience. I would hope they keep that going over the games remaining.”I’ve had problems in the past maintaining a competitive edge after a title’s been won. It’s a difficult attitude to overcome when players decide to put the tools away.”But I know how hard this set of players have worked to achieve what they set out to do at the start of the season. And the vast majority of supporters appreciate the work they’ve put in as well.Controversy over everything from income tax to takeover bids appears to have left very little time for the championship feeling to sink in for Smith and his players. But Smith confirmed that wasn’t entirely the case. He said: “It seems as if you never get very long to enjoy anything at this club at the moment.”But the state of our training session on Tuesday morning would have seemed to indicate that the players had time to celebrate their success.”The reality is there have been other matters which have attracted the headlines since we beat Hibs at Easter Road to take the title.”I don’t feel particularly sorry for the players because of that. It does take away from your happiness but there’s nothing any of us can do about that.”The much-discussed subject of the manager’s own immediate future has also become a no-go area for Smith. He said: “I don’t need to discuss it anyway because wee Jim McLean’s already made the decision for me and told me what to do in his Record Sport column. He says I should retire and enjoy myself.”Is this the same Jim who watches more football now on a daily basis than he did when he was in charge of Dundee United?”At least wee Jim’s given Walter credit for having done enough to merit a long rest, and without suggesting Mourinho could put his feet up better than Smith could.

Neil Lennon: Celtic need to sign a superstar to get the fans interested

NEIL LENNON believes Celtic need to sign a superstar this summer if they want to get the supporters flocking back to Parkhead.

The club’s average home attendance is down 11,000 on last season and only around 2000 fans turned up for Wednesday’s friendly with AZ Alkmaar.Caretaker boss Lennon admits he was disappointed with the turnout in midweek but is confident some quality close-season buys will get the turnstiles clicking again. He has already identified a number of targets and insists Celtic do have the financial clout to attract a big name despite not being guaranteed a place in the Champions League. He said: “Possibly yes we need a big signing or we could make three or four signings to get the crowd interested.”Get them to think, ‘Yes, that’s the type of player we like and want to watch’.”A couple of leaders, a couple of winners. I’m pragmatic but I do like an entertainer, someone with a bit of creativity.”We’re looking at all those areas. If you get three or four or someone who grabs the imagination that’s great.”Robbie Keane captured the imagination this season and whether it’s a loan signing or a permanent one I think the club are capable of doing it.“Lennon concedes Celtic haven’t done their bit on the park this term but believes the crowd against AZ was not a true reflection of supporter feeling. He said: “You’re possibly overstating it. There were reasons why there were only 2500 people there.”It was a friendly, I’d said I would use the squad players, it coincided with the Old Firm Youth Cup Final and a lot of people went to that instead.”Am I disappointed in the crowd? Maybe, but there were reasons. There were 30,000 at the last few games if that.”There were 41,000 at my first game against Kilmarnock before Ross County.”The crowds haven’t been great but the only way to get fans back is to put a team on the park to perform consistently well.”Majority shareholder Dermot Desmond and chief executive Peter Lawwell have already asked Lennon to be part of next season’s recruitment process. But there have still been no assurances on his long-term future as he attempts to record his sixth straight SPL win against Motherwell today. He said: “Yes, I’ve spoken about signing targets with Peter, Dermot and John Park. We are targeting players.”However, Lennon is well aware his chances of landing the job will be greatly enhanced if he can mastermind victory over Rangers on Tuesday night. He said: “It was the same last week at Dundee United. It was a big test, would I come through? “So I’m always one result away from weakening my position. Rangers is THE game. But when you look at the league, Old Firm matches look after themselves.”It is results against the other clubs that really set out what lies ahead for your season. But, yeah, it is going to be like a cup final”The Ross County result possibly means I now have no margin for error. But I’m still enjoying every minute.”
