Hibernian defender Chris Hogg and Rangers forward Kyle Lafferty
Lafferty strikes Rangers ahead in the 17th minute

By Andy Campbell

Rangers retained their Scottish Premier League title with a narrow victory over Hibernian at Easter Road.

Kyle Lafferty fired Rangers into the lead on 17 minutes with a well-taken strike past goalkeeper Graeme Smith.David Wotherspoon and Derek Riordan came close to levelling for Hibs after the break, with the latter also having a penalty claim turned down.Colin Nish had a goal disallowed for a foul on Lee McCulloch as Hibs’ late charge failed to yield a score. With second-placed Celtic having beaten Dundee United earlier in the day, Rangers knew victory in Leith would guarantee them a second straight SPL success. And the visitors threatened straight from the off as Steven Davis’s cross was headed over by Maurice Edu, who replaced Madjid Bougherra in the starting line-up in a reshuffle that saw McCulloch dropped back into defence.Kevin Thomson’s corner was headed towards goal by David Weir and flicked over by Kenny Miller, who moments later volleyed clear of the bar from a Lafferty head-flick.Rangers’ opener came when Miller lifted the ball forward for Lafferty to run on to and the Northern Ireland international held off the challenge of Darren McCormack and Chris Hogg before firing a left-foot shot into the far corner.Hibs were being caught on the break with quick balls over the top and, in one such attack, Davis raced clear and tried to set up Thomson, who fouled keeper Smith as he tried to make contact with the ball and was promptly booked by referee Willie Collum.Riordan tried to give the hosts more attacking impetus with a long-range dipping shot that was spilled by goalkeeper Allan McGregor before the danger was cleared.A Thomson free-kick was headed back into the six-yard box by Weir for Edu to head over, Smith doing just enough to put the American off.A teasing Rankin corner was glanced wide of the Rangers goal by the head of Paul Hanlon six minutes ahead of the break.Hibernian were inches away from a leveller 10 minutes into the second half as Rankin’s back-heel teed up Wotherspoon, who swept his shot just wide. The home side were attacking with more purpose and Riordan skinned Steven Whittaker before going down in the box under the defender’s challenge but referee Collum waved away the Hibs forward’s spot-kick appeal.Steven Naismith had replaced top scorer Kris Boyd in the Rangers starting line-up and drew a save from Smith with a powerful drive from the edge of the box.Patrick Cregg’s replacement Nish nodded a long ball down to Riordan, whose rasping volley was beaten wide by McGregor. The game was becoming increasingly stretched and Edu’s deflected drive whizzed beyond Smith’s left-hand post.Nish chested down a long ball and unleashed a shot into the net but the referee’s whistle had already blown against the striker for a push on McCulloch. And Rangers survived out a late rally of Hibs corners to get the win they needed.

Rangers manager Walter Smith’s future still unclear

Title win ‘a wee bit special’ – Smith

Rangers manager Walter Smith gave no hints about his future after overseeing a second straight Scottish Premier League championship win.

Smith, whose side beat Hibernian to clinch the title, has been working without a contract since January. And when asked about the future, Smith told BBC Scotland: “I don’t know. I’ll just enjoy this evening.”It’s a tremendous feeling. I think our players thoroughly deserve it for the work they’ve put in over the season.”Kyle Lafferty’s solitary strike was enough to give Rangers the win they needed, with the Ibrox side now 11 points clear of nearest challengers Celtic with three games to play.

Salomon Kalou celebrates after scoring Chelsea’s first goal

By Chris Bevan

Salomon Kalou’s hat-trick helped a rampant Chelsea thrash Stoke and return to the top of the Premier League.

Kalou headed home Didier Drogba’s cross before Stoke keeper Thomas Sorensen sustained a dislocated elbow as Kalou slid in to score his second goal.Lampard made it 3-0 from the spot after Robert Huth fouled Kalou, who then ran clear to complete his hat-trick.Lampard hooked home a fifth and Daniel Sturridge’s cool finish and a Florent Malouda tap-in completed the rout.Chelsea move a point clear at the summit with two games to go and their performance was an emphatic response to last week’s defeat by Tottenham that had given Manchester United renewed hope in the title race.

Gabriel Agbonlahor
The defining moment as Agbonlahor falls under challenge from Johnson

A hotly-disputed late penalty from James Milner took Villa level on points with fourth-placed Tottenham after an entertaining midlands derby.

Roger Johnson appeared to win the ball in a challenge with Gabriel Agbonlahor but referee Martin Atkinson pointed to the spot and Milner smashed it home.Birmingham had the better of the chances but found Villa keeper Brad Friedel in unstoppable form.Villa held on to secure their sixth successive victory against the Blues.Apart from the fierce local rivalry, of which there was clear evidence in the build-up as the fans traded insults, both sides had plenty to play for in their 100th league meeting in the top flight.Villa were keen to pursue their quest for the Champions League, while Birmingham were seeking to establish their highest points tally in the Premier League. In addition to their wretched recent record in the fixture Birmingham’s form was not encouraging, winless in their last seven and beaten in six of their last seven away games, with 18 goals leaked in the process. But instead of dour defensive approach they showed admirable intent in a surprisingly open game and had the first genuine chance as Lee Bowyer slipped a pass through for Sebastian Larsson.Villa keeper Brad Friedel set the tone for the afternoon, however, pushing him wide, and from an acute angle on the left side of the area, Larsson sliced horribly off target with his left foot. The Birmingham midfielder soon floored Villa captain Stiliyan Petrov with a fiercely struck free-kick that caught the Bulgarian flush on the forehead.Villa pressed but the visitors continued to have their fair share of chances, Cameron Jerome through on goal and only denied by the advancing Friedel, who hacked clear. With Birmingham looking comfortable there followed two chances in quick succession for Villa.Carlos Cuellar squared to Petrov whose measured low first-time shot from 25 yards was tipped away by Hart, and the Manchester City keeper, on-loan for the remainder of the season, was alert to beat out a stinging drive from Stewart Downing after he found spaceStill the goalkeepers remained on top, Friedel keeping out a well-struck long-range effort from former Villa man Craig Gardner that bounced just in front of him, while at the other end a first-time shot from James Collins eight yards out was superbly tipped over by Hart.Birmingham started the second half brightly and seemed certain to break the deadlock in a remarkable passage of play.Another astute pass from Bowyer found Jerome through on goal but evergreen Friedel, 39 next month, rushed out to smother the shot bravely with his body.James McFadden collected the loose ball but his shot deflected fractionally wide, then from the resulting corner Liam Ridgewell rose on the edge of the six-yard box but the former Villa defender’s header was booted off the line by Downing on the post. The chances continued for Birmingham and Bowyer saw a low left-footed shot somehow kept out by the redoubtable Friedel.Villa introduced Heskey and the veteran forward, found himself through on goal but as he tried to lift over Hart the ball brushed the keeper and wide of the post. But then came the key moment of the afternoon, which left Birmingham incensed. As Agbonlahor surged down the left side of the area Johnson slid in to tackle him, sending the striker sprawling in the process.Referee Atkinson concluded it was a foul, a decision that caused an even greater split between the rival clubs.

Fans warned ahead of Birmingham derby clash

Football fans are being urged not to get involved in trouble when two Birmingham teams meet on Sunday.

West Midlands Police said officers will be taking a “robust stance” against troublemakers when Birmingham City play at Aston Villa at midday.Supt David Sturman, match commander, said officers had been working with Aston Villa and a high visibility operation will be in place. He said he accepted there was “a minority” who seek to cause trouble.Anyone arrested for football-related matters will face a banning order.

Anyone arrested for football related matters will also be subject of applications of football banning orders which will prevent them from attending future fixtures

Supt David Sturman, West Midlands Polic

“We have worked with Aston Villa to ensure that this event takes place in a trouble-free and safe environment,” he said.

Thousands of avid supporters will attend the match to enjoy the spectacle and atmosphere of a local derby, however we acknowledge that there is always a minority who may seek to use the occasion as an excuse to cause trouble.”My message to this minority is that there will be a high-visibility operation on the day and we will take a robust stance against anyone whose behaviour falls foul of the law.

“Anyone arrested for football related matters will also be subject of applications of football banning orders which will prevent them from attending future fixtures.”Earlier this month, four men were convicted at Birmingham Crown Court of violent disorder following the derby at Birmingham in September, police said. All received prison sentences of 36 weeks, suspended for two years and football banning orders for three years.
