Liverpool have been told by UEFA that they will receive only a paltry 12,000 tickets for next month’s Europa League final – if the Merseysiders can beat Atletico Madrid.The news will remind Liverpool fans of the fiasco surrounding their European Cup final appearance against AC Milan in Athens three years ago, when the club received 17,000 out of 64,000 tickets.

The allocation was a key factor behind a night of trouble at the Olympic Stadium, leading UEFA’s William Gaillard to famously label Liverpool supporters as ‘the worst fans in Europe’.The Hamburg Arena has a capacity of just over 57,000 but for the final the standing area in the north stand will be converted to seating, reducing the capacity to around 51,500.Around 25 per cent of the available tickets will be allocated to each club, with the rest going to German residents and UEFA sponsors.

A club statement read: ‘From our previous experiences in 2001, 2005 and 2007, we expect demand from our supporters to easily exceed the number of tickets the club are able to supply.’Regardless of how many games you have attended, only fans who have registered their interest will be eligible to purchase a ticket in the event that the club reaches the final.’

Sir Alex Ferguson has dismissed rumours he will retire as Manchester United boss at the end of next season.
The 68-year-old has been United manager for over 23 years but last year said he would step down if his health or hunger for the job ever deteriorated.Inter Milan boss Jose Mourinho and Everton manager David Moyes have been touted as potential successors.But Ferguson said ahead of United’s crucial game against Tottenham: “It is rubbish, there is no truth in it.”The Scot almost retired in 2002 but changed his mind and subsequently went on to win a host of Premier League, FA Cup, League Cup and Champions League honours.Although Ferguson said last year he was in the “penalty shoot-out” of his career, he has no desire to step down in the immediate future.”I have no intention of retiring and if I did the people I would tell are (chief executive) David Gill and the Glazer family,” he added.
