Aston Villa 0 3 Chelsea

A clinical second-half display secured Chelsea’s place in the FA Cup final and kept alive their hopes of a Premier League and FA Cup double.

Aston Villa were unfortunate not to win a first-half penalty when Jon Mikel Obi brought down Gabby Agbonlahor.Didier Drogba poked John Terry’s drive past Brad Friedel to open the scoring.Florent Malouda doubled the lead sweeping Michael Ballack’s cross home at the far post before Frank Lampard’s low drive compounded Villa’s agony.

Celtic 0 2 Ross County

Ross County celebrate Steven Craig's opener
Ross County celebrate Steven Craig’s stunning opener

By Fraser Gibson

Celtic slumped to one of the worst results in their history as Ross County stunned the Glasgow giants at Hampden to reach the Scottish Cup final.

Derek Adams’ side kept Neil Lennon’s men at bay and forged ahead early in the second half after Steven Craig cut through the Celtic defence.Celtic had their second-half chances and Georgios Samaras hit the post midway through the second period. However, Martin Scott volleyed home a second to seal an historic afternoon.County pressed from the start and didn’t allow Celtic time to settle, but Robbie Keane always looked dangerous whenever he took possession.Aiden McGeady almost slipped in Keane, but the ball hit the striker’s heel, summing up their early struggles. The First Division side’s best effort of the opening half arrived on 17 minutes when Lukasz Zaluska was forced to tip over Scott Morrison’s dangerous cross from the left.Celtic had few flourishes forward, but Scott Boyd had to clear Marc-Antoine Fortune’s pass across goal from the right just before the half-hour mark as Keane lurked with intent.County remained full of running and put together some tidy moves around the edge of Celtic’s area without ever seriously threatening. The match continued a familiar pattern with the Dingwall side enjoying the majority of possession and Lennon’s men hoping to find Keane with a killer pass.Marc Crosas replaced Cameroon midfielder Landry N’Guemo for Celtic on the brink of half-time in a tactical switch as the lethargic Premier League team looked for a change in fortunes.County again forged forward at the start of the second half and Craig blazed over at the back post from Vigurs’ cross.Samaras performed some good work on the left wing for Celtic and centred the ball, but there were no takers.Iain Vigurs then looked to have spurned a magnificent opportunity for the Highland side when Richard Brittain’s corner arrived at his feet and he shot wide with the goal at his mercy, but a foul had been givenHowever, the Victoria Park side did not have long to wait to take a stunning lead as Craig cut in from the right and produced a scything run through the Celtic defence and finished emphatically.Celtic had suffered a miserable season and would have to act decisively if things were not to get a whole lot worse.Fortune looked certain to level with just over quarter of the game remaining after a Lee Naylor free-kick broke to him in the box, but his left-foot finish was deflected behind from four yards. The striker was then replaced with Paddy McCourt as Lennon searched for a spark.County were having to survive an onslaught as Celtic fought desperately to save their season, but they held firm.Zaluska had to pull of a smart save from Brittain’s long-range effort as Adams’ side looked to kill off Celtic’s challenge.Samaras should have levelled for Celtic when he smacked the ball off the post after McGeady’s cross. But County finished off the game off as Andy Barrowman crossed for Scott to volley home from close range and all but end Celtic’s season.

Hull 1 4 Burnley

By Nabil Hassan

Martin Paterson
Martin Paterson equalised in the first half for Burnley

Relegation-threatened Burnley boosted their chances of survival after Brian Laws’s side came from behind to win.

Kevin Kilbane headed home from close range after just two minutes to put Hull ahead before Martin Paterson’s neat finish pulled Burnley level.Midway through the second half Michael Duff won a penalty that was converted by Graham Alexander, who six minutes later scored from another spot-kick.Wade Elliott’s superb free-kick late on rubbed further salt into Hull’s wounds.Victory saw Burnley climb above Hull on goal difference, but West Ham’s win prevented the Clarets from moving out of the Premier League relegation zone.Hull and Burnley are now four points off safety with West Ham and Wigan above them on 31 points, although the Latics and the Tigers have played a game less.Considering the turbulent week Burnley have just experienced after the humiliating 6-1 defeat to Manchester City and rumours of dressing room unrest, Laws’s side could not have picked a better time to pick up their first away win of the season.

David James says 2008 FA Cup win began Pompey crisis

James on Pompey’s ‘weekend of destiny’

Portsmouth goalkeeper David James says victory in the 2008 FA Cup final set the club on the road to financial ruin.

“It has had a terrible effect on the club over arguably the last 18 months,” said James, whose side face Tottenham in the FA Cup semi-final on Sunday.”Qualifying for Europe was financially and physically damaging for the club.”Portsmouth, who appointed David Lampitt as its new chief executive on Friday, went into administration in February with debts of over £60m.Two years ago, Harry Redknapp delivered Portsmouth’s first FA Cup success since 1939 with victory over Cardiff at Wembley. But with several players collecting bonuses for their success, James says the Cup victory began the process of financial meltdown.

Had we not won the FA Cup, bizarrely it would probably have done us a lot better

David Jame

“To offer people the opportunity of big bonuses to qualify for Europe seems like a pretty safe bet, simply because you do not anticipate a club like Portsmouth winning the Cup,” said James.”Had we not won the FA Cup, bizarrely it would probably have done us a lot better, because we would not have qualified for Europe and would have been able to build on two decent years of progression.

“Having won the cup, the financial impact was crippling and then as a squad we just were not kitted out to be able to sustain the European, as well as league and cup campaigns which followed.”We ended up suffering on both fronts.”Despite his misgivings about the 2008 Cup success, James is relishing the prospect of taking on Spurs at Wembley.”Winning the FA Cup on its own was a tremendous achievement,” he added.”This year we have got a semi-final against decent opposition, and if we can give ourselves a chance of winning the cup again, that would not be for the lure of getting into Europe – it would be winning another trophy for Portsmouth.”If Pompey do make the final, they may have to do without several of their players, who will be making their final appearances for the club in the semi-final because of expensive trigger clauses in their contracts.Administrator Andrew Andronikou has revealed that “five or six players” would be eligible for bullet payments if they played another game.

These could be cash payments of up to £100,000 or the guarantee of a contract renewal for next season.”These bullet payments mean that they can play in the semi-final, but not play another game after it, unless they waiver those payments,” said Andronikou.

“That would be tragic for the player if the team is in the FA Cup final, but it will be the players’, or their agents’, decisions. They are going to have to forfeit those contractual obligations or they cannot play again.”As the club is in administration and as the administrator, I am not in a position to allow these payments or indeed to allow the players to automatically renew their contracts for next season.”Meanwhile the club announced on Friday that Lampitt, the Football Association’s head of football integrity, would be replacing Peter Storrie, who stepped down on 12 March.”I am delighted to have the opportunity to take up this new challenge with Portsmouth,” he told the club’s website.”The club has been through some tough times this season and I intend to bring some stability and transparency to operations.”Pompey have some of the best fans in the country and they deserve their great support to be matched by equally high standards of governance at the club.”Lampitt, a qualified chartered accountant, will take up the post once his period of notice has been agreed with the FA.

Portsmouth are 14 points from safety with five league games remainin

FA chairman Lord Triesman said: “David Lampitt has been with the FA for six years and has made an outstanding contribution to our regulatory obligations.”It is a great tribute to him that one of our oldest and most famous clubs should look to his expertise and personal character to bring it through a time of great difficulty.”Portsmouth’s fans should take comfort in a wise long-sighted appointment, and I wish David every success.”Pompey are on the brink of relegation to the Championship, having been deducted nine points on 17 March for going into administration.Andronikou was appointed on 26 February with the aim of cutting costs and finding a buyer for the Hampshire team, currently owned by Hong Kong businessman Balram Chainrai, who took control in early February.

PREMIER LEAGUE clubs will decide in June whether to extend ‘parachute payments’ for relegated clubs from two years to four years.

The proposal is part of a package of solidarity payments for Football League teams that is being debated, with a decision due at the Premier League sides’ AGM in June. But any change is unlikely to go through without the consensus of the Football League. The parachute payments, aimed at softening the financial blow of relegation, are due to rise from £12million a year to £16million from this summer. The one worry about extending the payments is that they could serve to increase the advantage that relegated clubs hold over their rivals in the Championship in terms of being able to guarantee higher salaries to players for a longer period. The Premier League agree a package of solidarity payments to the Football League over three years. The last package, signed to encompass the 2007-10 period, saw more than £90million handed over including £5.4million for youth development.Money for Championship clubs varied depending on how many were in receipt of parachute payments. Those that had made an instant return to the Premier League no longer received them and the money was distributed across the rest of the Championship depending on where they finished in the league table

Britain sends South Africa 42m condoms in HIV fight before World Cup

• Host nation has one-in-five rate of HIV/Aids among adults
• Plea for an extra billion condoms before football fans descend

Britain is to give 42m condoms to South Africa in response to a request for an extra billion as part of an HIV prevention drive before the World Cup, the government will announce today. The request for British help in stockpiling sufficient condoms for the expected influx of thousands of football supporters in three months’ time was made during President Jacob Zuma’s recent visit to the UK to meet the Queen.“Obviously there’s a big focus on the World Cup coming up and a huge increase in the number of people coming into South Africa,” said the international development minister, Gareth Thomas, who will announce the £1m funding today at an emergency summit in London on HIV prevention and treatment. “The South Africans have identified themselves the need to get more condoms in place. South Africa specifically asked for British assistance and we are responding to that request.” He pointed out that the fans would inevitably spill over into neighbouring African countries with high HIV rates, which would also need to take precautions. The South African government estimates that up to half a million visitors could travel to the country, raising fears of a rise in prostitution and sex trafficking from neighbouring countries and eastern Europe, and creating a potential HIV timebomb.Last week South Africa’s Central Drug Authority warned that 40,000 prostitutes were expected to arrive for the month-long tournament.South Africa is embroiled in a struggle to combat the world’s biggest HIV caseload and to convince its population of the importance of safe sex.The South African health minister, Aaron Motsoaledi, expressed concern that the message was being ignored because people believe HIV can now be easily treated.”President [Jacob] Zuma made two far-reaching statements on World Aids Day,” Motsoaledi said. “He made a strong statement about prevention and a strong statement about treatment regimes, but after World Aids Day South Africans were only talking about the one.

“That’s what is worrying me. I am saying treatment must only come after prevention … We are worried that South Africans seem to be thinking that we have arrived.”The Department for International Development (DfID) is keen to support the South African government because of the leadership it has shown recently on HIV. On World Aids Day in December last year, the South Africans announced bold plans to improve access to HIV treatment, particularly for pregnant women and young children, as part of a fresh political will to tackle HIV and Aids. Now the attention is turning to preventing new infections. Some 450m male condoms are distributed in South Africa every year but, with 16 million sexually active men and one of the highest HIV infection rates in the world, there are never enough. The DfID will today host an emergency meeting in London to try to stop the fight against HIV and Aids from running into the sand. Five years ago, the G8 pledged universal access to treatment and prevention by 2010. About 4 million people in poor countries are now on antiretroviral drugs to keep them alive, but more than 8 million still urgently need them. More than 33 million people live with HIV around the world and a further 2.5 million people became newly infected last year. The Global Fund to fight Aids, Tuberculosis and Malaria, which channels money from donor countries into disease-fighting programmes designed and carried out by developing countries themselves, said that an estimated 4.9 million lives have been saved since it was set up in 2002.It predicted that, if efforts continue, mother-to-child transmission of HIV in childbirth could be eliminated by 2015, TB could be halved and malaria effectively eliminated from many countries. But its funding is now under threat.”This report clearly shows the world’s investments are making a difference,” said Michel Sidibé, executive director of UNAids.”However, Aids is not over in any part of the world and, without a fully funded Global Fund, our shared dream of universal access to HIV prevention, treatment, care and support could become our worst nightmare – putting the lives of millions of people currently on treatment in jeopardy and millions of pregnant women … not able to protect their babies from becoming infected.”

HIV nation

An estimated 5.7 million South Africans are living with HIV, about one in every five adults. There are about 1,400 new HIV infections and nearly 1,000 Aids deaths every day. Television adverts ask viewers to “imagine the possibility of an HIV-free generation” by being cautious. But condom use is still far from a social norm.Critics accuse South Africa’s leadership of undermining the fight with denialism and hypocrisy. Former president Thabo Mbeki’s unwillingness to act has been blamed for the premature deaths of 300,000 people.President Jacob Zuma, while being tried on charges of raping an HIV-positive family friend in 2006, was ridiculed for testifying he took a shower after sex to lower the risk. He was acquitted of rape. Earlier this year he again did not use a condom when having sex with the daughter of a family friend, who subsequently gave birth to his 20th child.

Category: Sport
Descrizione:
