Cardiff City have ‘no Cup fear’ of holders Chelsea

Dave Jones insists his Cardiff City side will have “no fear” in their lucrative FA Cup fifth round showdown at holders and favourites Chelsea.

The 2008 FA Cup finalists’ reward for Saturday’s 4-2 over Leicester City is a trip to Stamford Bridge – and Jones urged his men to make more cup history.”I’d be disappointed if my players weren’t looking forward to strutting their stuff at Chelsea,” said Jones.”If we could pull off a result it will be another notch in our history.”Cardiff played Chelsea in the FA Cup in March 1921 when the Bluebirds won 1-0 at Ninian Park – but also beat the Blues on the way to their famous 1927 FA Cup final win.The Bluebirds held Chelsea 0-0 in the 1927 FA Cup quarter-final before beating the Londoners 3-2 in a Ninian Park replay thanks to goals from Sam Irving, Len Davies and eventual Wembley hero Hughie Ferguson – the only time the famous trophy has gone out of England.Cardiff had lost to Sheffield United in the 1925 FA Cup final so facing Chelsea again in the competition again two years after being runners-up at Wembley is a case of déjà vu.But Jones’ men face a tough task as Carlo Ancelotti’s treble-chasers are unbeaten at home this season – winning all but two of their games at Stamford Bridge.

Cardiff’s last four FA Cup campaigns have ended in London – starting with their 2-1 third round defeat at Arsenal in 2006.The Championship club were beaten 4-0 by Tottenham Hotspur in a third round replay in 2007, lost 1-0 to Portsmouth at Wembley in a memorable 2008 final before losing 4-0 to Arsenal in a fourth round replay last season.Cardiff’s third Wembley Cup final will live long in the memory and Jones points out a giant-killing act over European giants Chelsea would also go down in the club’s history. The five-time cup winners are the only one of the Premier League’s traditional top four left in the FA Cup after Arsenal followed Manchester United and Liverpool out of the competition due to their 3-1 defeat at Stoke City. But Jones insists his Premier league promotion chasers, who lie fifth in the Championship, will relish a trip to Stamford Bridge on the weekend of 13 and 14 February – where the hosts have not lost since November 2008.And Jones said: “If you’re going to pull one of the big clubs, it is the club to pull.

It will be a fantastic experience for everybody at the club and everyone is already looking forward to it.“Everyone will look forward to travelling down to he city and have a look at Chelsea as much as we did at Arsenal last season so it will be a great day.”

Chelsea beat Preston North End at Deepdale 2-0 to secure a fifth round clash while injury-hit Cardiff needed stoppage time goals from Chris Burke and Ross McCormack to beat Championship rivals Leicester City.Cardiff, who have not played Chelsea since a 2-1 League Cup win in October 1986, have appeared just once in the fifth round in the past 16 years – and that was en route to Wembley in 2008.”It would be tough whoever we play at this stage of the competition,” said Jones.”But it will be that little bit tougher because it is Chelsea with all of their world class players, the fantastic stadium, their great supporters, what they are going for and their history.”We’ll go there with hope that we can beat them and I wouldn’t expect anything less from my lads.”No doubt it will be a full house and we’ll take thousands of fans because we are playing a team who are trying to win the Champions and Premier Leagues.”Chelsea have two games in hand on Manchester United at the top of the Premier League and with one win, they’ll be back on top.

“And they were in a European Cup final 18 months ago and have a real chance of getting to another one this season. It is the biggest test we could have got.”It is every player’s dream to play at a stadium like Stamford Bridge and play world-class stars that Chelsea have – and I’m sure my players are no different.”I’d be lying if I didn’t say we need them not to be at their best and us to be at our best for us to stand a chance.”If they are at their best and we are at our best then they do have the better quality of players as that’s why they are where they are.”But everyone wants to be in the Premier League and playing these players week in week out.”We are testing ourselves against the best but we won’t lay down and die, we’ll be confident that we can get a result as anything can happen in the cup on any given day.”We’ll have no fear as this is a game we have earned.”
